struggling with dark angels

edit: I'm turning this thread into "what I'm currently working on" mode, since there is no point in opening up a new one :)

hi guys,

it seems I've been here since forever, but somehow I failed to even start a topic of my own. that's about to change.

here is my attempt at creating a master on a bike for my dark angels. the main bit of modelling is basically finished, however the gs-work needs some serious smoothing and some key parts are still kept in place by blu-tack.

the main concept idea was to get him in robes and make him a bit knightly/monk-ish. also, I knew I wanted him as WYSIWYG as possible, so I attached the arms on magnets for the sake of versatility. I plan to make him a power-lance arm and storm shield arm as well.

the bits come from death company box, sanguinary guard box and ravenwing squadron box. both blood angels kits are nice and crisp (compared to the robed dark angels kit, which is crude beyond recognition), but the bits require A LOT of shaving.

on to the photos:

the rider:

i'm still a bit indecisive about the head. at first, I was all into the knight helmet, but now I started to digg the high collar-hood version.

the hoodie version

please, don't hesitate to c&c!

kind regards ;),

k.

Really nice kit bash! While I like the helm, I think the hood gives off a more immediate 'Dark Angels-y' feel. Are you going to add plastic/GS swords to replace the filed off blood drops on the shoulder, etc?

hi guys,

I was in an another country for half a year, which translates into my models getting absolutely zero attention.

this is what I've been up to lately. the guy is supposed to stand in as a deathwing sarge/chapter master/belial. it's based on a tweaked chaos lord in terminator armour. as far as I can tell, this is my best greenstuffing so far (still objectively sucks  ). I finally learned how to sculpt ropes, which is sort of helpful in a dark angels army.

the tabbard needs a rework (it just looks straight up bad, so I'm not posting an upfront photo :D ). I also need to straighten up the bottom of the cape, because it is still too chaos-y for my taste. the top side is far from being clean as well (but the GS is setting as I write this). however, I am pretty proud of how the chest area turned out.

I'm going to put on some feathers, purity seals and various bits and bobs from the ravenwing sprue to cover up my obvious cock-ups. also, I plan to replace the power cables with sections of bass string.

also, there is a similar 5-man squad of robed assault deathwing in the works. each of them magnetised, as this guy. all I need to do is order some FW deathwing shoulderpads!

nice use of the BA bits there.i personally prefer the hooded head as, despite your conversion, i think the helm is a bit plan for a company master.

ther terminator looks really nice. are youplanning on making it a deathwing command squad if you use belial?

eventually, I plan to do that. as for now, the guy here is a part of my first terminator squad. as I said, they're all magnetised, so that means adding a magnetised banner for the standard bearer and a narthecium/reductor for the apothecary. a quick and simple job!

on the other hand, as I am utterly slow with my minis, the squad might get done in, like, three to six months. by that time, there might be a new DA codex and the terminator command squad might be rendered obsolete ;).

the master plus his new buddy prepped for painting.

i sorted out the cape, looks way better now. notice the added feathers and the oldschool lightning claws (many thanks to the author of this tutorial, the new ones are simply hideous :P). on to the models.

The modelling and G.S are well done my only nit picks would be the wrist mounted plasma pistol looks odd maybe swap it with a wrist mounted storm bolter or a combi plasma. The other small nit pick is the chapter icons being slapped on the storm shield looks hap hazard. Again the models and the GS look good I look forward to seeing them with paint.

thanks guys!

here's another update. this time it is a vindicator I scratchbuilt. I'd started the project waaay before the new model came out, so it's based on the classic one (see below)! I guess it must have been when the new whirlwind kit came out, around 2004 :-).

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wYqu-M0JBcM/TWA9Mfw0znI/AAAAAAAAAao/I49KWlWZDQs/s1600/Ultramarine_Vindicator.gif

it's more or less done. everything is done in freehand, there are no decals. the whole thing is snap on (partly held by magnets), so I can use the chassis for a razorback, a whirlwind or whatever I please.

Very nice work!!

I love the wings on the doors.

If I could make a suggestion it would be to give the red pistons a bit of a sloppy black wash to make them look greasy. Perhaps a bit of steel-coloured scratching too.
