dire need of suggestions

This is my first diorama piece and I have come to an impass. I am not sure what I could add or if I SHOULD add anything else to this piece before I start painting it.

Could I have some suggestions? Should I remove anything?

much thanks in advance

I think the most successful dioramas manage to suggest a story. They come across as a frozen moment in time, a vignette that, once you're done marveling at the conversions and advanced painting techniques, pushes you to wonder about the action or character of what's going on. They capture some kind of tension, some important moment.

This is random critique from "guy from internet", so take it for what you will, I've been wrong before.

I'm not sure what's going on here. I see a Black Templar standing among Chaos bits. Is he bravely breaking into an evil Chaos lair to do battle? Is he standing triumphant on the bridge of a Chaos ship after having killed all the heretics? Is this the moment when he realizes that his whole life is a lie and throws off the shackles of the False Emperor?

I have no idea. What I see is a Black Templar stuck on a big base that has Chaos bits stuck to it, the only dominant theme being severed heads. All kinds of severed heads. But there is just the figure and the severed heads, there is no suggestion of that "moment" I mentioned earlier. This could be anywhere for any reason. He might be in his trophy room aboard a crusading strike cruiser lecturing recruits, or he might be on a daemon world making an offering to Khorne with all these skulls.

My suggestion, for what it's worth to you, is to recompose the spikey bits and severed heads into something that makes sense of this Black Templars heroic pose, something that suggests where he is and what he is doing. If this were a Chaos Marine there would be much less mystery to what's going on. Chaos Marines are always posing with skulls and spikes. But the Black Templar, I think, needs a bit more context to clue the viewer in to what this is a diorama of.

Hey dude looking good. A couple of ideas for you, if he's a statue I would increase the height of the bases he's on and if he's not a statue I would replace the bottom base with a larger one so it looks like steps. Or remove the bases all together and have him on the main base or another make-shift type platform, as atm the double base-thing, imo, is the only thing that looks odd and outta place.

So, thats my 2 cents, can't wait to see it painted up.....

....that reminds me I have my own diorama to get back too...

Cheers,

Jono

wow yes, that is exactly the advice I needed.

Basically when I was creating this, I did have an idea of what was going on in my head.

working with limited space, I wanted to create the black templar making a final stand of sorts, taunting all enemies of the emperor to fight. I wanted to create the illusion of a skilled black templar character who has slain many foes, and is waiting for the next challenge.

I have added some bits since the last posting and will take a picture shortly to update the progress.

This is the exact advice I need.

Any more would be greatly appreciated.

Last stand against a horde of foes?

In that case, you need bodies. As many bodies as you can.

In my experience, Orks are good for this, they don't need much in the way of bending/reposing. Just position their arms right and pop them face down.

I dont know how well it works with the chaos marine in there, or if I should even put him in there.

I am also not sure how well putting 2 bases together works either, and if there is a way to put them together so they dont look sloppy.

I do have the green modeling clay.

You don't need the chaos marine because now the BT looks like he isnt ready. I would maybe remove some of the spikes..put maybe a severed hand, a bolter or bolt pistol....or hand weapon on the ground. Maybe a severed arm or head.

That looks alot better, but like WolfLordKejl says ditch the Chaos marine as a "duel" type set up and place him as a dismembered heap at the Templars feet, be sure to paint lots of blood on the sword though.

Jono

It looks good but I would recommend not putting the 2 bases together. I would say to put a headless chaos warrior impaled through the spikes underneath the sword part on the diorama looking like he just slayed him and is pointing on to his brothers the next target.

My 2 cents. Hope it helps.

There has def been some good info stated already. I too would take out some of the spikes so that it doesnt look so linear and more random. I agree that there should be atleast one body if not a few and/or limbs about. I like the rock or wood that is on the base, but I think maybe you could trim it up a little so it looks like the templar is on a more elevated towering position. Lastly is I think he would look great after you painted him to spec some blood red on him so that he looks somewhat messy after a good CC battle. These are just clearly my observations and suggestions...looks like you are off to a great start and it will be fun to see the outcome!

modifications made. Trying to find room to add a slaughtered character, but it is going to be a stretch.

Recently I decided the base is something I might want to use for my forge world marshal that ill be using in my army, so I built this stand in space marine to hold it down while I waited for my other project to kick off.

Here are a few updated pics.

I am trying to figure out how to get the body parts to fit onto the end of the bottom platform, but i might have to make him hang off the edge.

update on progress

here are a few pics of the updated project. I changed the hero out with an extra emperors champion I had, and tried to add a dying chaos space marine in the mix.

Not quite done with the base, still need to add some grass and a few finishing touches.

feedback is more than welcome, id like to see what you guys think, as well as some suggestions

thanks in advance

Dude!!!!!! This diorama has come leaps and bounds from the first pics you showed. It is now truely awesome and my only further suggestion is paint it ASAP and bask in the glory of a Hall of Honor post!

Seriously sweet diorama.

haha nothing in comparison to yours grot. I went to your links and saw some work you did, simply brilliant!

I have been studying some of the stuff you have been doing to try to learn new things for my next attempt at a diorama

Thankyou for the kind words, but don't sell yourself short, that is a diorama you can be seriously proud of.

I almost think with the EC Model pose. It might look better if the chaos dude was not decapitated. Its almost like he is stairing the guy in the eye "before" the killing blow.

I am no expert on making these poses. But you might could try to have the chaos dude knocked down and maybe just have his gun or sword arm decapitated at his side. Starring up at the EC before he is slaughtered.

Anyways it looks cool, good job so far.
