FENRISÚLFUR
Hail Brothers! I'm currently in the process of painting my ever expanding force, and I have an question for you all. I would like my Grey Hunters to have the Great Wolf's pack markings, but what about their Rhino APC's? I was thinking that I should paint the recessed areas on the front and rear a different color rather than the whole model being grey, but which color does one go with? Black with a white wolf is the norm for the Wolf King, but I am torn between that and red/black markings of the Grey Hunters. I know that this is all personal choice, but I can't decide.. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/233584-painting-question/ Share on other sites
Chapter Master Ignis Domus
I tend to go with Mechrite Red, the same color I paint the pads. It gives it a very dark, but very cool look. But yes, I think you should paint those. Painting all the doors is also a good idea. Bulweih
Hail brother! If your wolves' and their tanks main colour is SW Grey I vote for Black, if it's grey then I vote for red which is the way I do mine. Red on grey just looks awesome, may I also recommend white numbers or runes on the red field. To second brother "Chapter Master Ignis Domus", Mechrite Red is the best way to start doing the red. If you want I can provide a pic of my Razorback done with red on grey tomorrow, as it is really late around here. FENRISÚLFUR
I'm using Grey, just as Russ intended, for my main color as I'm not a fan of the baby blue Wolves. I agree that the Red/Grey looks very good, as I have done this in the past. After thinking it over for awhile I do believe I'm going to paint the Rhino's to match individual packs, rather than the company. My next few days are very busy, but when I get time I will post some pictures of the tanks. My next few days are very busy, but when I get time I will post some pictures of the tanks. If you plan on consistently using the same Rhinos with the matching squads, then painting them to match the squads is a great way to go. Personally, I'm doing all of my wolves grey with red markings regardless of rank. This is more to support gameplay as I like to switch things up often. But also because I'm not a bit fan of the yellow. Because of this I'm doing red in the recessed areas of the Rhinos and then the top doors are painted with the geometric pattern that matches the squad. Here's an example: http://rkik.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/dsc00296.jpg?w=500&h=512 I'm currently working on one that has a diagonal red/black on the doors, but is otherwise quite similar. Wulfebane
But also because I'm not a bit fan of the yellow. You know that the yellow is usually only found on Blood Claws and/or Ragnar company shoulders, right? (Though I have a theory that it was intended to be gold in Ragnar's case) Don't think any of the other great companies use yellow. Chapter Master Ignis Domus
Interesting, Dahli. I never thought of painting the hatches. I just tend to do one, two or three stripes criss-crossing on the whole back of the Rhino. I'll have to try that. Grimtooth
This is whati have done for my GH packs. All the pack markings match the Rhinos: http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s89/Grimtooth_photos/IMG_1069.jpg My next version will be grey, with the recessed panels painted the same as the GH packs. Long Fang Razorbacks will have a white recessed panel instead of the red. Blacksad
nice going with the use of actual runes. Laguz, or water, is especialy fitting for Space Wolves :) the second one, Ansuz, standing for Odin is probably for the pack containing your "general"? just the last one seems less... fitting... Fehu (Cattle) standing for wealth, money, ... sounds more =][= to me :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/233584-painting-question/#findComment-2812773 Share on other sites

tauyippiejoy
Well, as far as I figure your Rhino got two sides right? So, what I like to do is to base my Rhino of my Grey Hunter's markings. My Grey Hunters left shoulder pad is yellow with Blackmane's great company marking (when I first started out with Space Wolves way back I just copied whatever was in the Codex - which was Ragnar's Great Company, since then I've just rolled with it!). The right shoulderpad wears the usual black/red motif. So, on my Rhino's the left side is painted yellow with runes or Blackmane's company marking, both on the front and on the rear. And no shock, the right side is painted in a black/red pattern. For the top hatch I just wish I had great freehand skills like some of our brothers here at the Fang, but alas, that's not the case so I usually just paint it in a single colour or some basic red/black pattern. commander alexander
Mechrite red definitely makes a nice base, then I work up to gore red or red gore, whatever it is, and then finally blood red for highlights. As far as symbols or markings, whatever you already have in mind should be sufficient. Wolf Guard also use yellow (and black), if you paint their right shoulder pads using the codex recommended "standard". However, that being said, I always recommend that you go with what looks best/suits your own tastes, and ignore what any codex sets as a standard. They are really only suggestions, after all. FENRISÚLFUR
Great ideas all around wolf brothers! I have been painting my Hunters and Claws with different pack markings, so I think that I will do the same for their vehicles.
