Victory over an impetuous pup!

So,

I'm in my local store last night playing a 2k game of 40k vs a Space wolf player. I'm using my mechanised Dark Angels namely captain and command in Razorback, 3 tacticals in Rhinos, 2 preds, 1 assault and 3 speeders. Which is besides the point, We're playing the game where you have a base each. Anyway all game long he's battering the crap out of me and I could roll nothing but one's (apart from leadership tests!)

The game ends on turn 5 after he rolls to see if we continue. The smart look on his face vanishes when he sees my last tactical squad are still holding my base. 'Ah well looks like a draw' that is of course when he realises in his haste to swamp my lines no one is holding his base!!

Score one for the Lion!

Congrats on the win. I just played a younger kid(12 maybe) on Tuesday. He was just really looking for a game and it seemed no one wanted to play against him. I think he had something like 1350 points total in his collection so I just told him to play me at 1k points. He was using a lemun rus, 2 sentinels, 2 vet squads, yarrik and command squad. I was using deathwing so I dropped 3 termie squads, belial, and a dread on the table. We were doing kill points and he managed to kill one terminator all game while I took out yarrick, the command squad, and both sentinels. I think he had a good time even though he lost I wouldn't mind playing him again.

Right after that I played a space wolf player. 5 las plas razor backs, 2-3 groups of longfangs, wolf scouts, 2 tac squads in rhino's and a wolf priest. I had 3 termie squads, 2 bike squads+mm attack bikes, and belial+sammy. It was an objective mission. Bad deployment made the game harder for me but I still almost pulled out a tie. He had 1 objective that I managed to contest using sammy in speeder and 1 other objective. I tried moving my attack bike out of one peice of terrain and into another that had my objective in it. I rolled a 1 on a second dangerous terrain test killing the attack bike and the game ended. It didn't help that even though I had 2 multi-melta attack bike, melta on a bike, 3 cml's, and sammy I only managed to blow up 1 rhino the entire game(and it was in assault). So he had all 6 turns to hammer my termies with las/plas razorbacks.

my most regular opponent is a wolves player. generally speaking he tries to table me, i usually win by staying alive and claiming more objectives. something about being a space wolf player makes them simple minded it seems

Seriously, I think it's because Grey Hunters are a no-brainer unit to use. You drive them into double-tap range, unleash a torrent of fire, then eat a charge and be happy to do so because your unit is getting as many attacks as they would have if they'd charged. So, you don't need to think about how to use Grey Hunters very much. Tac Squads, DWT Squads, and RWA Squadrons take a lot more thought to use.

Droma did the right thing playing against the first kid with IG, because I'm sure he's the kind of guy that knows how to play a casual game and try to teach people at the same time.

About the space pup players, I play against my buddy who uses a Death Star unit. As that group is rolling around the field, I manage to pick off the rest of his army, then focus on his big group. It's kind of funny to watch sometimes.

Good show. You might want to keep score of your game results for the future.. this week-end we'll see the return of a DA forum all-time favourite thread...

??

As for those low point non-comp games...the only thing I feel bad about is when you try really hard to pull your punches so he gets to do something with this loved unit...and realize some builds simply cannot peform..at all xD

I still remember a game, 2k, vs tau, 1 round of shooting to my Belial+squad (FnP) DWA onto his base...losing 2 terminators and multiassault 3 units xDD

I think we all know the same feeling. You don't want to discourage new players, but at the same time you still want to enjoy the game. I usually bring a tactical squad and a devastator squad with me when I play so I can mix it up a little bit against different players.

An all terminator army probably isn't the best thing to use against someone new to the game but I'm so used to playing against really competitive people around here that I just don't bother packing tactical squads anymore. One of the main reasons I think the kid had fun was because yarrick and belial were having an epic 1v1 duel to the death. Belial was using TH/SH but my rolling was terrible. Combat lasted for 3 turns. Yarrick reduced belial to 1 wound while belial failed to hit yarrick at all until finaly after rolling 12 misses in a row belial hits with all 3 thunder hammer attacks and lands 3 wounds on yarrick while yarrick finally misses belial and I manage to walk away with belial sitting at a single wound.
I played a guy the other day who had old school 'Crons. He had been playing since 2nd edition and could recite all of the rules off the top of his head. Normally, people like that irk the hell out of me, but this guy was a good teacher. After we played (he beat me), he took three young boys (all playing space marines: Smurfs, BT, and BA) and fought against them using the store's 'Nids. Whenever one of the younger boys would do something that would be a mistake, he stopped them, asked them why they were doing that, explained why it was a mistake, and suggested a better way of doing what they wanted. Shoot, I learned a few things from him regarding strategy. I wish more veteran players would be like that. I know I'm going to be.

That guy sound cool, we are lucky to have one like that in our group too, he even helped an oldish dog like me in a tournament (I was playing a new combo of toys for fun) and I smashed his left flank as a result. He still won the game with a then new SW power list so we didn't feel bad.

Wouldnt it be great if the staff of the game stores were as cool as that guy?

I agree with you my Brothers. If the store employees were as cool as this guy, the entire hobby would be better off. Instead, the GW employees in my area are more concerned with increasing their sales quotas in lieu of making sure we were enjoying our hobby.

I ran into that same man at the mall day before yesterday. He had three boxes with him and took the time to share his armies with me and my friends. In the first box, he had the old 'Crons army he beat me with. In the second box, he had a really cool Harlequin army that he had been collecting for almost a decade. The Farseer Character had been modified to resemble "The Joker". The entire army had that old school feel to it (all metal figures). The last box was an impressive Space Puppies army that included alot of Forgeworld parts. He told me he was building this army for his grandson. Overall, his skill in crafting, greenstuff, painting and modeling were downright impressive.

I couldn't help but challenge him with my DW against his Space Puppies. We, of course, had the Ritual of the Lion and the Wolf. I won (he rolled very poorly). As we were set up to play, in comes a few "know it alls" with their armies (DE and Chaos). Instead of playing each other, I teamed up with the Old guy (who's name is Russ) and we spanked the other guys. It was awesome as they were quoting rules that didn't exist while Russ countered them off of the top of his head. I, meanwhile, was pouring through the store's books to make sure Russ was right. He was.

Afterwards, Russ leans over to me and says "I hate know it alls. It makes me feel good to beat them."

Ain't that the truth brothers! So I say to you, let's not be like those "other" guys and let's be more like Russ to the younger players. It's the only way our hobby will stay fun.

My two cents.

Quoted for truth moi_a_mania!

There is a huge difference between friendly relaxed games and tournaments (however laid back they might be, its still a competition)...and that affects our playstyle.

I don't get a chance for many pick up games so actually 95% of my gaming is tournament only... and that brings out the rules-lawyer + corner-cutting attitude we all have when trying to win. And for someone who has always thought this is for fun and to laugh... its worrying.

Anyhow, nothing makes you feel better than pounding a smart-ass ;)

Hehehehehe, call me evil but i just did that and i feel great(not on the table but on a discussion).

I love it especially on the internets, were every one is a prophet and know it all.

Its one thing been a smart a## and different when helping someone.

It's nice to see people out there enjoying the game for what it is, and not making it become this epic struggle to win at all costs. I've seen too many playes like that, and it makes me sick to think what these people are really like outside of the game.
