Stryke
Hi all, I'm currently debating whether to add a wolf priest or a lone wolf (TDA, Thunder Hammer, SS) into my 1500 list. I've searched and read peoples experiences using lone wolves, but didn't find any comparing their usefulness to a WP. I run a predominately Grey Hunter mech force with rune priest, 2 LF squads, predator and dreadnought. If I do add a WP, it would be with the GH to maximise their CC prowess, but if I add a Lone Wolf, he could help soak fire, beat people and be awesome in general. Both seem to have pros but I can only take one sadly, any suggestions welcome. Grimtooth
A Lone Wolf wil work.......alone. A wolf Priest needs to be tossed into a unit to make the most of his abilities. Valerian
They don't really compare, as they do completely different things for your army. A Wolf Priest is useful in turning a "standard" unit (like Grey Hunters) into a dedicated Assault Force. The Lone Wolf is useful as a Disruption Force, moving up to intercept units and either destroy them or fix them in place for a turn or two. I discuss the Lone Wolf quite a bit at the end of my blog article "Valerian's Guide". The link is below in my sig. TiguriusX
LW and WP aren't really direct comparison units. They have vastly different applications The LW is a mini-hero and threat magnet. His main role is to run interference and intercept the big bad monsters and HQs on the field The WP is a support unit and works best when he is "buffing" another unit Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/233684-wolf-priest-vs-lone-wolf/#findComment-2813492 Share on other sites
Xeenos
I feel that the Wolf Priest would have more net value given he buffs others. I suppose the thing to look at for your army is what is needed really. If you need something to smash IC and Monsters, then perhaps the Lone Wolf is the answer, if you want to get more bang from your Hunters, then the Priest is a sure win. The Priest is no sissy in combat either. I personally think id rather the priest over the LW simply because i can put one into a Rhino, where as the other gets to walk 6+1d6" Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/233684-wolf-priest-vs-lone-wolf/#findComment-2813550 Share on other sites
Fhyn
Thing I have done with my Lone Wolves, is I start them next to a Longfangs Razorback. At start of turn one, he gets in it and starts moving across the field. Granted, this means putting him in power armor, but I always give him a storm shield. I believe it states in the FAQ you can do it, cant remember, but it doesnt say anything about not doing it. It helps me get him to where he needs to be. Otherwise to be honest, most my opponents just ignore him and keep out of his distance. That would be how id run it.. i suppose Power Armor + 2 wolves in a razor back.. takes up 5 slots and gets the 12" move. But kind of an investment for a SINGLE figure. Well, 3 if you count the wolves. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/233684-wolf-priest-vs-lone-wolf/#findComment-2814083 Share on other sites

skoll
i would take the lone wolf because after my termie lone wolf tied up a full squad of gaunts for 5 turns (keeping them off of my LF and killing them on turn 6) I never leave home without em. Then again my 1500 point list has the lone wolf AND the wolf priest. Toasterfree
You can't really compare apples and figs buddy. But what you can do is proxy Nd find out what you like best and then decide that way. That's how I have done it to find what units out of the dex and to find their synergy AND their effectiveness Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/233684-wolf-priest-vs-lone-wolf/#findComment-2814649 Share on other sites
