Grey Knight Grand Master WIP

Recommended Posts

I decided to make a Grey Knight Grand Master, mainly out of spare parts from AOBR box and left overs from the Grey Knights Terminator sprue. I wanted a Grand Master for my army, but so far GW hasn't come up with much that I like. Bare in mind its still WIP, but I'm open to C&C.

So to begin with I took the AOBR Terminator Sergeant model and applied my razor saw to its head. I liked this model because its pose is a lot more fluid than the Grey Knight Models and kinda reminds me of the Space Marine Calgar model.

I decided to keep the leftovers, the head and the "hood" section.

Then I sculpted the "hood" with a knife to help with the green stuff process. I suppose if you were good enough at sculpting you could skip this and make it out of green stuff, but I have difficulty sculpting odd shapes at the point I'm at.

Here's another angle, it all fits together pretty snug.

I applied a bit of Green stuff to the "hood", to make it smoother over all. I'm still learning how to work with green stuff, I bought some clay shapers the other day which totally revolutionized my sculpting.

I've got more work to do, but I thought I would put a Termie Head into the model to see how it looks so far.

Well I was tempted to cannibalize another miniature to make the arms for this guy, but I can't see how that will help in the long run. Really I'd be happy if I could make this guy just from spare parts.

From the Grey Knight Terminator sprue you DO get a few extra arms, but the left over positions are pretty lousy. I might try and reposition them, but I've never done that before. The unused apothecary arm is also an option for me.

Also an even bigger problem is the shoulder pads. I've used all of the shoulder pads and may have to come up with something myself. I honestly don't know how I could replicate a grey knight shoulder pad or even anything close to it.

I continued using up the spare pieces from my bits box. Firstly I removed a storm bolter from the arm of an AOBR Terminator.

I then took the right arm from a Terminator and chopped it at the elbow.

I then took the wrist section from a spare arm of a Grey Knight terminator. I didn't want to use the arm because the pose was useless and also the shoulder pad was far too small without having a shoulder pad attached. I attached the Grey Knight wrist to a AOBR arm; the AOBR shoulder is as large as a Grey Knight Shoulder complete with a shoulder pad.

I added the gun to the wrist section, which fitted fairly well. There were plenty of spare hands and shoulder grieves in the Terminator Kit, so I really had a good choice, even after creating 5 terminators.

The construction of the Grand Master is essentially complete and I'm pretty happy with the results.

Anyway, I'll continue with the WIP and then onto the completed model.. and then painting I guess.

First photo, the breastplate has been bulked up by adding a 2 tier pattern and Iron Halo.

Next, a suitable base.

I tidied up the green stuff a bit once the under layer had cured; It took me a while to learn that trick. If you're just starting out with green stuff like myself, that's something really useful to learn - the fact that you shouldn't expect to sculpt the whole damn thing in one go. It takes time and several layers, at least with the way I do it.

Anyway, I also added a small strip of plastic card. I tried to find a strip that was of similar thickness to the other models. The strip was originally flat, but I bent it around one of my clay shapers for a few minutes and it held its shape reasonably well.

Finally, the other arm. I was gonna convert the models right arm, but I figured that by including an actual arm from the Grey Knight Terminator Kit to make it look more like a Grey Knight.

Tada! I hope he looks like he's capable of leading the Grey Knights into battle! RAWR!

Hello again!

So the construction of the model is pretty much complete. I may or may not add something later on, even into the painting process.. that's just how I roll.

Speaking of which I will continue the WIP into the painting process. I'm hoping to have the model completed for some games this Friday, which is another 3 days (big ask for me, as I'm the slowest painter ever and easily distracted).

Base coat

Painted some of the base, scrolls and undercoated armor boltgun metal.

Almost finished painting, just a few more things to do.

Added to the scrolls

Shaded some of the model

Changed the colour of the hood back (it just looked nicer in my opinion) and also finished painting the gold pretty much. Now I have to get started on highlighting and the sword... not looking forward to the sword. Considering I have about half a day left to finish the miniature, I might have to take a few shortcuts.

Finished the sword tonight. Took me a while to figure out how to paint the nemesis force weapons like everyone else does, but it will do since I'm trying to rush.

Just need to finish the detail on base and some highlighting I've forgotten. I was going to attempt OSL on the eyes, but I fail at that 9 times out of 10. lol

Blood trail. (I'm guessing a Bloodletter has red blood.... I don't know honestly)

Thanks for all the encouragement. For now however I'm moving onto a new project.

Having played my first game with Grey Knights the other day, I've decided to make a Brotherhood Champion model as it would make a fun addition to my force. I really like The Perfect Warrior special rule, but I feel like the Castellan Crowe model doesn't really capture the prowess of the character (really... the dude is just standing there holding a sword). So I took my inspiration from a Kor'sarro Khan, Crowe as well as another GW model I've seen around.. but I can't remember its name. Anyway, considering I haven't bought any new models I've decided to continue making the model out of spare parts.

To begin with I got one of the spare arms holding a Nemesis Force Sword, cut the grip and put the hands closer together repositioned. I cut up some wire and pinned it so I could adjust the position when I put it all together.

Space Marine commander backpack and Iron Halo as well as spare arms and a breastplate from the Grey Knight box.

Positioned the arms with the use of the wires.

Pinned the model to a base and added a head.

Green stuffed the gaps between the shoulder and hands and added scrolls. Now the model is complete, not bad for an afternoons work. I think he could show Castellan Crowe a think or too.
