The .50 isn't a huge amount smaller. You could go with the original airsoft idea, but with 6mm paintballs. But you sound like you know what you're doing so I'll shut up now. If I use .50 cal and the current scale I am looking at an O.D. of the barrel at its smallest point of 16mm and the I.D.'s nominal size 12.7mm which gives me a wall thickness of 1.65mm. I might need to make it out of chromoly but that wall thickness is not unconventional for paintball guns as far as I can read and not out of my reach to fabricate.
