thade
Be liberal with purity seals and old paint (aquilla, decorations, trim) and sashes; also paint their helmets a veteran color...white is common, but any color that fits your army will do. My Tactical squad sergeants have orange heads, my melee veterans have white helmets...my sternguard I did blank and orange to make them stand out with a unique head color. Boltguns are nice for sternguard, but combi's are cheap and awesome. See if you can't get a few combi-meltas for yourself. Lord Ragnarok
For mine, I used the Forgeworld pre heresy/heresy armor to really distinguish them vs the tactical squads. However that proposition is expensive. You could keep the Crow's skull (AKA Beakie) helm, the studded shoulder pad, the mark 8 armor and the mark 5 torso and the mark 6 legs exclusively for your sternguard if you just want to use the tactical box. thade
To be fully accurate, I should mention that sternguard boltguns typically have larger-than-normal ammo magazines (to reflect their special ammo); while not necessary for WYSIWYG (provided they have enough gold paint/other decorations to distinguish them from normal marine squad boltguns) you might want to just for coolness and accuracy. verpine
If you have some storm bolters that come with any LR/Rhino-based kit, its really easy to cut off the box mags and put them on bolters, and they become unmistakably sternguard. Lord Ragnarok
For one of my Sternguard squads I used the large double pouch that comes in the tactical box to represent different ammo options. Each member has it. It differentiates them from the other squad who are wielding FW Umbra Ferrox Bolters with the large box magazines. If you have any left try to reserve the large double pouches for your sternies. And like Thade said use the scopes to further differentiate them from the tacs. Chapter Master Ignis Domus
Because I feel it is my duty to spread this among the masses, I give you the AngryJohnny Sternguard Tutorial. Enjoy! My Sternguard were pretty easy. They're all plastic bits from various SM kits. They were a little pricey though, I had to bits order all of the torsos & banners and various other bits. I think in all this squad cost me over $125.00, but I think it was worth it. 1. The torsos for all of them are from the SM Company Champion. 2. The heads are from various boxes, I chose the heads because of the targeting device, the Sergeants head is from the Devastator box I believe. 3. The combat blades are from the Tactical Squad boxes, I had a lot of chain sword arms that I hadn't used so I just chopped off the chain swords an attached the combat blades 4. The backpack decorations are the banner topper removed from several of the banners the Sergeant is wearing. 5. The Bolters are all standard Bolters with a scope attached to them. I would have used the Umbra-Ferrox pattern Bolters had they been available at the time I made this squad. I still might use them... 6. The rest of the marines are standard Tactical Marine bits with a few purity seals added here & there. 7. Their shoulders are from the IF/CF Tactical Pack (Not pictured as they hadn't arrived at the time of the pictures.) 8. The Heavy Flamers are Multi-Melta's from the Devastators with the melta nozzle removed and replaced by the Terminator Heavy Flamer nozzle. And the final result: Here my plastic Sternguard that I kit-bashed: Sternguard 1 Sternguard 2 Sternguard 3 Sternguard 4 Sternguard 5 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234028-sternguard-modelling/#findComment-2820942 Share on other sites
Firedrake Cordova
Another option is the Crux Terminatus from the Terminator boxed set - about 10p each from bitz sites. Or the fancy bolter from the Command Squad boxed set (about £0.5-1 each). The WarStore stocks both in its bitz sections. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234028-sternguard-modelling/#findComment-2821910 Share on other sites
Hemal
If you have deathwatch bolters anywhere they are excellent proxies for the Sternguard mixed ammo bolters Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234028-sternguard-modelling/#findComment-2822032 Share on other sites
striker8
I will refer you back to this older thread http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=232496 That thread should help give some direction in how to make plastic Sternguard.
