Angelis Mortis
I have a game coming up this Monday. 2k pts GK vs Eldar. I have never played against Eldar in 5e so I was seeking advice on good builds and some strategy/tactics. Models available: All HQ choices. 25 Terminators (can be Paladins) 30 GK PA (Approx 6 PsyCan, 6 Incin) 10 GK Interceptors 2 Dreadnaughts (No dual AC avail, but most other arms) LR Redeemer Rhino 3 Chimera 50 Acolytes (actually old IST and modeled as such) Everser Cullexus 12 Deathcult 6 Servitors So, any advice on how best to approach Eldar? What kind of shinanegins should I expect? Should I go Mech or Foot slog? Elite small force or as many boots on the ground as possible? Any advice would be great as I have no clue about 5e Eldar save very light surface knowledge. Thanks in advance. thade
First thing to point out here is that you won't be able to depend too much on your psychic powers; unless he is either very sporting or makes a very big mistake, he'll bring that Eldar Shenani-crap that makes you take your psychic tests on 3d6 and suffer Perils of the Warp when you roll too high to pass. At Ld 9 (or in some cases, 8) that will be difficult at best. I would definitely field the Culexus, as it will make him sweat bullets if he brought a Farseer. (They're not super lethal, but as they're still rare to see, the perception is that they are super lethal.) And it will ruin his Farseer's day if you get close enough. Psychic powers won't work, but you know what will? Psycannons. Light. Them. Up. You've got 25 Terminators; build yourself a Paladin Deathstar and throw a banner on there so you needn't worry about activating their Force Weapons (and the whole +1A is quite nice). Would allocation will make them so thick they'll do fine without a transport: just ensure each one has a different loadout. (Keep the unit under 800 points.) Dreadnoughts with Assault Cannons + Psy ammo are Psycannons; they also have their super Aegis (will help you shutdown Doom), so I'd bring them both and be careful with them (keep them alive). Leave the LR at home: between Lance weapons and Firedragons, it won't last long. Interceptors will be nice, as even your Henchmen could charge most Eldar units and send them packing. GK will ruin their days. Read this thread by Grey Mage; it's packed with anti-Eldar information. Eat it up. Some general tips... Take away their mobility as soon as you can; Eldar force-fields are very good against single-shot weapons like MLs and LCs...not nearly so good against spam weapons like Psycannons. Ground them asap. Once they can't fly, they are in your world. Keep your guys close to one another so you can throw support where it's needed. Each Eldar specialist unit is super-broken at one aspect of the game and suck at all others: Dark Reapers are super-powered anti-infantry shooting, Banshees have high initiative and a huge number of power weapon attacks, Fire Dragons all pack meltaguns...if you are separated, the Eldar will be able to pit their units against whatever they can best kill. If you're a porcupine, you can mitigate this. Read that thread! And good luck. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234155-grey-knights-vs-eldar-need-advice/#findComment-2819710 Share on other sites
Liba terminatus
Well said thade :P How about a null rod on an inq? You will literally eat his psychic powers like a it was cake Hmm isn't incinerator str 6? Well ID template of fun Then there is the buck-o-dice trick I mean they can't seriously save all those 4+ saves can he? Well unless he's me :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234155-grey-knights-vs-eldar-need-advice/#findComment-2820148 Share on other sites
Angelis Mortis
Appreciate the replies, definitely helpful. Reading through the thread that was suggested a few times, getting some ideas. Any other general tips would be greatly appreciated. Angelis Mortis
Ok, here is a list I've come up with. Any thoughts/comments/critiques welcome and encouraged. 1x Draigo (275 pts) 1x Crowe (150pts) 1x Ven Dread (2xTL AutoCan, Psybolts, Truesilver, Searchlight, 206pts) 1x Vindicare (145 pts) 7x Paladins (Troops, 1xIncin, 3xPsyCan, 3xHalberd, 1xDH, 1xBanner, 1xApothecary, Psybolt ammo, 515pts) 10xPurifiers (Troops, 6xHalberd, 4xPsycan, 266 pts) 10xInterceptors (6xHalberd, 1xPsycan, 1xIncin, 2xDH, Psybolt ammo, 329pts) Totals: 31 models 1998 pts. 8x Psycannon 2xIncinerators Plan is to keep them tight for mutal support and footslog up the middle (scenario & terrain permitting). Vindicare to deal with any Psyker shinanegans. Draigo attached to Paladins for death star action. Purifiers fire support that isn't afraid to get hit in melee and deal with transports. Dread main role anti-transport duty, secondary fire support. Interceptors for back where necessary and obj grab late game. Counting on overwhelming fire power concentrated on attriting units as fast as possible and tight group to support any melee. Any thoughts would be helpful. PS- No idea what he's bringing. Just know its Eldar and he has enough to field anything in the codex. No idea his skill either. EDIT: One thought I had was changing Psybolts from Paladins to Purifiers for max pt efficiency. It is a lot of toys and not as many bodies as I'd like to see, but it's not too bad. Two special characters would be frowned upon where I play (it's the kind of thing people reserve for gloves-off-Ard Boyz-style-tournaments) and Crowe is tricky to use to boot. Still, the psycannon saturation is nice. Also, I like the Incinerator on the Interceptors. Their ideal use case will be hopping over your front-lines to light up anybody grounded by your psycannons/rifleman. EDIT: One thought I had was changing Psybolts from Paladins to Purifiers for max pt efficiency. I assume you mean "max points efficiency" here regarding the number of models you'll be giving psybolts to; keep in mind how much more survivable a Paladin is than a Purifier (2 wounds + all different wargear = those guys will be around longer) so it's not necessarily true that the Purifiers should get it over the Paladins. I'd try this list as is and see how it goes. Learn to use the parts in it and see what ones suit you. Thats a good point about the Paladins 2 wounds. The reason I took Crowe and Draigo is because it allowed me to have the Paladins and Purifiers as troops. Thats the only reason I took both. I'm debating droppng Crowe and taking a Strike Team and taking another IC to get Servo Skulls to stop infiltrators. Tankred
I think the flamers are not useful on the interceptors, as you loose theri firepower, if you shunt, ´cause it´s a bad idea to shunt in flamer distance and get charged next round. I tend to save the shunt for end game obj grabbing. Barring that, it would be in support of another unit. Anyways, the halberds should help if they are charged, and I most likely will put Shield of Blades on them which will also help. Ozybonza
I wouldn't bother making the dread venerable, nor would I bother with truesilver armour. If you drop those upgrades and crowe, you should be just about able to fit a strike squad. If you drop those upgrades and crowe, you should be just about able to fit a strike squad. I've thought about that. The only thing is its my only vehicle and my main anti-Grav Tank unit. So the Vulnerable to keep it alive as long as possible as I am sure it will be a prime target. The Truesilver was an after thought due to left over points and as a response to if he tries to smash it with an Avatar. At least it will get some wounds back (dice gods premitting). I'm not so sure I value a strike squad more than the survival of the dread, because if I lose him my anti-Grav Tank ability is seriously reduced. Thanks for the thoughts though, this is the sort of stuff I need to prepare. Just keep him away from their Avatar. :D True, and truthfully it probably wont be a problem, but then I have the points left over. Any ideas on something better to spend them on? thade
I forget the amount of points off-hand (don't post them <3) but I bet it's enough to do master-craft a psycannon or two for your Paladins, or otherwise help buff/differentiate them from one another for wound allocation. I just realized your Dread does not have Extra Armor. Consider giving him that. I know that Fortitude is better than Extra Armor...but if Fortitude fails you, Extra Armor means you might still be able to hobble him into hard cover.
