Malevolent's Knights of Blood

Recommended Posts

+++ HAIL FELLOW FRATER!+++

Hello and welcome brothers to Mr.Malevolent's Knights of Blood W.I.P thread! I've decided to focus on one and only ONE Astartes force, that of course being the mysterious and not well known Knights of Blood. And since it is a beautiful day out I figured I should snap some pictures with my phone to show you I'm not dead :P

The state of all things Malevolent

As many of you may know my last project was of a True Scale Sons of Malice Company. I haven't given up on the project but more or less shifted them officially to the back burner. The current state of my job/financial status and the recent move, has alerted me to the idea that I cannot currently work on a project that requires so much time and effort ordering online for bitz and bobs AND keeping a steady supply of green stuff. So with that said, I went off into the dungeon and dug out some old projects to give a face lift to. I can only show you one project as the others are not of the Astartes nature (Tau and Imperial Guard). Now the marines I am about to display are at about 80% finished modelling wise, they still need a bit of tidying up here and there and of course the bolters being drilled (my current intact drill bit is too large). Once I procure some green stuff I will have them ready for primer in no time and since they aren't as in depth as True Scale, should allow for faster updates.

Bloody knights oh my!

So as I began working on converting my older marines from a long ago abandoned Relictors project (circa Eye of Terror global campaign), I couldn't decide on a Chapter. I was originally going to make them Marines Malevolent but, MM follow the Nikea Edict and so do not include Librarians. So that was a no as I have two Librarian models I've been itching to get painted for quite some time. Next I thought of maybe going Relictors, but I really didn't want to go Vanilla Marines, I have an itch for speed and swift assaults so I dug into Codex:Blood Angels. I was almost going to choose Flesh Tearers but alas there are way too many FT threads on here so I began searching again. After looking over the Successor Chapters page I settled on Knights of Blood. Their both Loyalist and Renegade and are the mirror image of the Flesh Tearers, where one has started to control themselves (in a sense) the other has let go and I dig it. So I've decided on Knights of Blood. Now for some pictures....

Update 7/27/11 Army so far....

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/Armyshot.jpg

First is a squad photo. You may notice I'm missing a few Initiates and you'd be right. One is coincidentally hidden behind the Sergeant and one has gone missing all together! I could've sworn I made 10 Initiates... anyways, you may also notice that I converted pretty much every Initiate. I've gone for a scanning/walking pose for most of them. I figured I would experiment and I gave it a go. I definitely like this posing rather then the "I'm gonna crap my pants" wide footing of the Marines straight out of the box.

Squad 1

Next up are a few pics of two individual Initiates I converted. The first is in fact the first Initiate I converted into this walking pose and I believe he looks awesome!

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/MarineStandardFront.jpg

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/MarineStandard.jpg

And the second Initiate is a failure on my part to represent an Initiate readying his arm to chuck a live grenade at the enemy. I think the whole pose isn't working, from the legs to the squat head pose. Let me know what you think.

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/MarineGrenade.jpg

Finally we have two HQ choices. First is my scratch built unnamed Chaplain. If you've been following my random threads you may notice hes borrowed from another project ;)

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/ChaplainFront.jpg

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/ChaplainBack.jpg

I like him, especially since I'm using old OLD bitz on him and hes my first scratch built Chappy (don't worry I'll be fixing his back pack soon enough). He definitely wont be the last, especially when my financial nonsense evens out and I make 3 more <_< what can I say I love Chaplains!

Next is one of my favorite character figures from the good old days, DA Chief Librarian Ezekial who will now be namelss KoB Librarian until I figure out a cool name :) I basically shaved some mold lines off him, stuck him on a nice cork board base and converted a used back pack for him.

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/LibrarianBackpack.jpg

There you have it so far... An incomplete squad and a few HQ choices. I also have 2 Dreadnaughts (one with Assault Cannon and one with Multi-Melta) and a few snap together squads I'm converting (thanks to Doghouse for his limitless sources of inspiration) on the chopping block so expect some pictures of them soon. You guys always give good comments and criticisms so let me know what you think of them so far.

Good choice with the Knights of Blood! It's nice to see them get some attention!

I look forward to seeing them painted...and you can always prime one up by brush for a test mini! ;)

@hushrong: Thanks brother. I did manage to prime two Initiates and it worked. The humidity was manageable and I even used an old can of primer. And since you mentioned painted....

Update

As mentioned before the humidity here in Buffalo has been higher then normal. However I did manage to get two Initiates primed. One is at 85% completion and the other is at about 30% (drybrushed Boltgun Metal and washed a bunch of times). There are two firsts for me on this guy. One- I took a shot at OSL with the eyes, and I'm actually very proud of them. I've been wanting to give it a try for so long and finally got up the courage to do it. Two- I went to town on the squad badges and Chapter symbol. The Chapter symbol came out a bit cock-eyed but its nothing a little brush edit wont fix :P

Now I must ask of some suggestions from you guys. I'm going for the desert wasteland base but I'm stuck on this ram skull I added to the base. I don't want it to detract from the Initiate or become lost in the base so what would you guys suggest color wise. Let em know and as always thanks for looking.

Edit: You may have also noticed that I changed the threads name and you'd be right! I decided I needed to only focus on one marine project for now as I would love to get in the Tourney scene again. So in the grander scheme of things I am working on the Knights of Blood 2nd Company, a Tau force, and an Imperial Guard force. I think I've got my work cut out for me haha

Good stuff so far, brother. For the ram's head I'd suggest doing it in Deneb Stone and then Skull White. That way it won't blend into the brown base. ;)

Nice OSL. I agree with the base, but I would also give it a couple glazes of a brown to bring the color down a little and not pull the eye away from the model. Basically you dont want the highlights to be as bright as the OSL.

I really like the shade of red you got on these guys, and the OSL effect on the eyes look great. My only suggestion would be to find yourself a thin-tip paintbrush for the small details, like the Chapter Heraldry and Company markings. Looks a tad thick right now. Other than that, lookin' good, man!

No Marines Malevolent though? Traitor... -_- :tu:

The marine is looking good! Now I want to see an army of them!

I must also look up this thin-tip paint brush 1000heathens is talking about. I also heard of a '3 hair brush' as well for doing freehand.

@Olisredan&Doghouse: Thank you so much. I've decided to go with a little bit whiter scheme then the base but washed heavily to show its been in there for a long time like Serraphim suggested. It should keep it from detracting from the OSL on the eyes.

@Little Lost Swordsman: Thanks brother :)

@1000heathens: Thanks brother! Yeah when I first went over the symbol and badges it came out a bit thick. I did however go back over them and cleaned them up a bit more and added a black lining on the badges so they would show better. One day I'll manage some Marines Malevolent, one day..... haha

@hushrong: Thanks! Don't worry you definitely will be seeing an army of them A.S.A.P. I've got so much Marine stuff I can easily have a 1,000 point force ready in no time. Right now I'm gearing for a combat patrol force (400 points) to be completely done, so I can get in some quick small games (I'm really anal about having a force completely painted before gaming with it, bad luck I believe)

Little Update

I'm trying to push myself to work and get progress before I reply to my threads as a way to keep myself concentrated on what I set out to do, so I bring a small update. A bit of work on the badges and symbol and the current progress on the other Initiate.

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/Badge2.jpg

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/Badge1.jpg

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/SymbolCloseup.jpg

Now the second Initiate

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/TatcicalMarine2Front.jpg

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/TacticalMarine2Back.jpg

So about 65% done. If I'm up for it after work tonight I might just finish him, which would leave me all day Saturday, to prime the rest of the squad and begin/finish the silver. During coats I may work on one of the Dreads. I cant do much though, until I can get some Furioso arms, since I wont be fielding any "normal" Dreads. Thanks for looking!

Update

First up is the army so far (you may have noticed it in the first post). I have 2 Rhinos/Razorbacks, 1 Predator Annihilator/Baal Predator, 1 Sanguinary Priest in pieces, 5 Assault Marine, and 2 Dreadnaughts.

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/Armyshot.jpg

I managed to finish the second Initiate even though the weather has been so amazing ;) I also touched up a few things on the first Initiate like tightening up details, fixing a few annoying mistakes, etc.

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/Initiate2Front.jpg

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/Initiates1and2.jpg

Also heres an overhead shot of the Rhino interior I've been chugging away at.

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/Knights%20of%20Blood/Rhinointerior.jpg

I've decided that a Chapter like KoB who has been declared Renegade and has the temperament of a crazed berzerker, would care little for the conditions of the interiors of their vehicles. Especially the workhorses of the Chapter, like Rhinos and Razorbacks.

Let me know what you guys all think. I'm very happy with how things are progressing and can definitely see myself flying through my old stuff pretty quickly. Oh on a side note, my pin vise snapped in half the other day so the barrels will be done A.S.A.P. and I'll be grabbing a nice fine detail brush soon as well.I also noticed that I'm running out of Chaos Black... It seems like if its not one thing, its a million others. Oh well, thanks for looking!

Cool stuff Mr. M.!

I am envious that you will be rockin' a Baal Predator! (wondering now if my Astral Claws could steal one from their allies, the Lamenters. Hrmmm)

I do like the idea of the machinery looking a bit more wore down from lack of upkeeping. I think it is a fitting idea given the fact that its tough when you're a renegade. Besides painting stuff looking rusted and worn, any other ideas you are going to implement for this?

My only criticism is the amount of what might be washes on the legs. If you look at the left profile image (3rd pic), you can see what I mean. If it is from a wash, perhaps either water it down? Other than that, get back to work on the Knights! ;)

Hmmm you pose some good questions brother! For the upkeep, I've been thinking of perhaps adding skulls to the interior, like trophy racks in the same idea as Brother mikhail'sCarcharodons. Maybe even going so far as to damage the interior, maybe adding some exposed wires, kill tallies, broken computer sets.

Now with that leg, I think what your seeing is Scorched Brown that I slapped on to try and make weathering. I noticed that after I did that, you can barely see it only at certain angles so I'll probably stop.

With the leg, the Scorched Brown looks good and it fits well with their bases, what I was referring to was on the third pic, looking at the joint where the foot meets the shin. It just looked like there was a heavy use of devlan mud. I tired doing muddy bases for Vampire Counts this way...but i wasn't taken with it. I thought to redo the mud by applying the scorched brown with gloss varnish over it. that way it would look nice and sloppy.

I also want to pick up gloss varnish to do the scorched brown/ red gore mix with the gloss over it for blood effects as i havent found any tamiya clear red where I live. I saw it on that mix on the GW site for somebodies Carcharodons. I think if i build up my retaliators (with some cool poses)...they would look nice with red on them.

Skulls and trophy racks would be nice. I still regret not being able to model the inside of my LRC (when it was for my Sons) with trophy racks. You know how people have trash from mcdonalds on the floor of their car? It would be like that...but with bones, corpses, and the smell of death. *speaking of McDonalds...I can't help but remember your Happy Meal marine :)

This is looking very nice. The chapter, company, and squad markings in particular are looking very sharp. As a quick question, do you intend to use some chaosy parts to give them more of a berserker feel? I saw the one chaos helmet and was wondering if you plan on using more.

Thanks for the kind words Little Lost Swordsman I really appreciate it! Oh I definitely will be using more Chaos bits. I seem to have more Chaos bits then Loyalist and since I cant afford the Forge-World armour kits right now I'll just use the Chaos bits to pass off as older Marks of armour and more importantly to give them that berzerker feel like you pointed out :P

Thanks Biohazrad you'll be seeing some updates on the Rhino/Razorback very soon.

A nice new update for you all

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/8/3/254695_sm-Blood%20Angels,%20Kob,%20Space%20Marines.jpg

Current state of Tactical Squad

I decided to make a different Vet Sergeant for the Tactical squad and move the first one to the new Assault squad as he seemed a bit to "assaulty" for the advancing/scanning Tactical squad. I seem to love power fists and had to give him a nice big one from a spare Termie arm. I think he definitely is at home with his new unit. (I also decide that all "veterans" in the army will have Veteran symbols either about their armour or on a small banner pole to emphasize on the coolness of Vets ;))

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/8/3/254696_sm-Blood%20Angels,%20Kob,%20Space%20Marines.jpg

New Tactical Veteran Sergeant

I re-worked the "grenade chucker" marine. I also added a few small bits here and there to some of the boys like a spare flamer fuel tank, pouches, grenades and of course bayonets.

Then of course I had to make a unit for the Assault Sergeant!

And of course you cant play a Blood Angels army without a Sanguinary Priest to throw a kink in your opponents CQC plan, especially in Patrol missions!

I definitely like how he looks with a Lightning Claw over the Power Sword. I think for the same points its a no brainer. So there is my little update. Let me know what you think and thanks for looking!

I'm digging the lightning claw fella, my only suggestion with him would be making a slight cut at the inside of the top knuckle, so that you can bend the blades like he's curling his fingers. Far more menacing that way, lol. Other than that, very cool man.
