Master-Inquisitor
I am returning to the game after several years and I used to play vanilla marines. I decided blood angels fit how I play so I am changing things up a bit. After trying to come up with a list I have hit a snag. Here's my dilemma... I don't know which unit to attach my Librarian to. I have three options: Honor Guard, Sanguinary Guard or Vanguard Vets. I was thinking of jump packing all of them. Essentially I am looking for a unit that can get the libby into combat so he can wreck characters and other nasty enemy units. The Honor Guard I was thinking would be nice cause the priest comes built in and I would load out with storm shield to protect from shooting and power weapons to get a decent number of kills. Probably would attach the banner as well so give them a bit more "umph" in combat. The Sanguinary Guard are really awesome on paper but I am not convinced they would be as good in game-play. I'd have to buy a priest separately and they are only a 5-man squad with means any casualties are a major deal. But they do have the better save so they may have some survivability. The glaives are also a real nice touch along with the bolters for soften folks up before the charge. Being able to buy the banner also makes them even nastier. The Vanguard have been a more recent consideration. They have the same drawbacks as honor guard (i.e. regular PA saves) but I can get more than a 5-man squad so casualties are less of a problem. However they don't seem to hit as hard without the banner or the glaives. I'd also still have to buy the priest separately. All-in-all I am stuck. I'll be playing friendly games of the local store against mainly other marine armies, so killing power armor and marine characters is my biggest consideration. Am I leaning towards the honor guard and the potential for invulnerable saves to stop enemy power weapons but I am unnerved but the lack of hitting power. Just looking to bounce ideas of you guys not for someone to make my decisions for me. What have been people's experiences when comparing these units are HQ-escorts? Thanks guys! terminatorAM
i dont plat a pure DoA but here's my suggestion: the VV have heroic intervention w/ JP which doesnt work with attached characters so keep them by themselves to deep strike and kill something early. the honor guard is a small unit with a priest already attached which can be good in cc but they also can have 4 special weapons making them a rare choice in a DoA army to provide fire support, arm them with plasma guns and blast those 3+ squads away. Now i havent used the sang guard myself yet but they look promising with the right attached characters, add a priest and the libby and suddenly that 5 person squad is now 7 (w/ 8 wounds) and with a banner, furious charge, feel no pain, 2+ saves, and libby powers they look like a real nasty unit in cc. Babel_Triumphant
I run sanguinary guard and I love them. With the 2+ armor save and a nearby priest they are nearly impossible to kill with small arms, and they cut heavy infantry to pieces in assaults. With a priest on board and a banner in tow, the guards are laying down 20 str5 power weapon hits at initiative 5 on their own. With the added attacks from the priest and libby, it's very possible to cut an entire 10-man squad of marines to pieces in a single round, before they can hit back. Midnightmare
Or you could load up on storm shields if you went with an HG, add in a load of L/Claws and a hammer and you are good to go (with built in FC). I would be tempted by the Sang Guard however if you don't want to go mad with the points though, as they are very cheap fo all the equipment you get. Venerable Jazzman
I use a Vanguard fairly regularly, but the inability to attach a SP really hurts them if you want to Heroic Intervention them, unless you can drop a SP nearby on the same turn and get him to join in the Movement phase (I'm guessing that's legal). Having no Furious Charge and FNP unless you get lucky with your D6 at the start of the game is a bit of a pain in the ass. My HG run 4 plasma guns and a Banner, so what they hit stays dead. And really don't like the Sanguinary Guard models, so haven't used them.
