How to Equip my Captain?

I'm a long time collector (a very long time!) but i am seriously considering actually playing the game. My dilemma is this: i can't decide how to equip my captain. i want him to accompany an assault squad (sarg has Fist and plasma pistol) so he already has a JP but a thunderhammer, fist, power sword and infernus pistol are currently sitting at his feet whilst i ponder.

There are bound to be loads of of players out there with experience of each of these load outs. What is your opinion?

You could also go with the infernus+pw combo. That way you make use of his high WS, I and BS.

Plasma Pistol and Power Weapon also works very well in that regard, whatever you shoot with that PP you'll very likely kill, so it will definitely make the points back.

Storm Bolter and Thunder Hammer also works very well, even though you lose the I advantage, but he still hits like a truck. (And if he survives first round, whatever's hitting back goes last so..)

You know, that is interesting; I've never seen anyone put forward a plasma pistol like that before...but if it costs the same on the Captain that it does on any rank-and-file trooper (and if memory serves, it does) then that's actually a potentially very good recommendation, as it's a BS6 (? in BA it's still 6 on the Captain, no?) plasma pistol. Hits on 2+/6+, kills almost any infantry model on 2+ and awards an off-hand attack with a power sword. I am extremely curious to try this now.

Wouldn't you know it: I feel compelled to paint and try this guy now.

The reason Captains have fewer options (lack of Digi Weapons, Artificier Armor, etc.) in the BA dex is that the dex assumes a Sanguine Priest will be near enough to the Captain to buff him...and a 2+/4++ FNP 5 attacks at S5 rerolls to wounds monster that can Sweep seemed a bit much to them. (I can't blame them.) This guy might be fun. In the very least, he'll be fun to paint.

I still have to finish my TDA Captain with 2xLit claws. He literally needs one or two more detail work passes and a finisher matte spray and he's fieldable. He's the kind of guy I'll field and my opponent will be like "orly? noob." and then later he will weep tears of defeat that only an enemy of the immortal Emperor can truly know.

Sorry Thade, We don't have access to anyone BS6 in the BA codex (and if I recall correctly the only one in the MArine codex who is BS6 is the Sniper scout special character)

Ah, ty James. Are the Chapter Masters in the vanilla codex not BS6? (No codex on hand at the moment.)

BS5 is still impressive; hitting on 2+ only is only slightly less impressive than having a re-roll which needs to be a 6. Pity though.

I'm not a huge fan of the infernus pistol, but at the same points as the PP on a character who will also have a jump pack, how often are you going to need to extra range of the plasma?

Not really seeing a huge benefit here compared to the AP1, potential melta and ID vs T4. Plus no chance to take a wound when you miss.

Well, To be fair, if you are going to field an IC with WS6, you may as well go for a LC instead of a PW. So a Combi-Melta with LC is probably a better choice than melta pistol with PW, this way you won't be restricted by the crappy 6"/3" range, which you'll probably not find yourself in more than once..

I still think PP + PW is the best solution though, the PP will pop transports and kill meq/teq reliably at decent range (12"), can be re-shot (and you'll get more than one opportunity to shoot at 12"), and gives the bonus attack..

As for self wounding - who cares? This is a W3 3+ model, who'll very likely have FNP.

Thanks for all the insight.

given me a food for thought. i think i'm going to be leaving my captain out of my main 1500pt list and upgrade my chaplain to a reclusiarch. Capt will perhaps feature in smaller games. i've made him up now with a pw and infernus, should cause a mess when there aren't too many models knocking around. a pair of LC's sounds great but i don't have any and i have splashed a bit too much cash recently.....

thanks again if you have added comment. genuinely useful and interesting.
