FENRISÚLFUR
Hail Brothers! I recently went to the local shop and decided to pick up the new Finecast Njal Stormcaller. Being that he is resin, I opted to do some small modifications to make him my own. I wanted him to look as if he were in the midst of a battle, rousing the world wolf to defend his brothers in arms. Hopefully the very minor changes that I have done reflect that. If there are any suggestions as to how I could improve, please feel free to share. So it is that I come before you to seek the approval of the Rout. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2160.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2159.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2158.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2157.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234475-njal-the-storm-caller/ Share on other sites
Ashur
Excellent. Better that the original one. Can't wait to see him painted. :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234475-njal-the-storm-caller/#findComment-2822675 Share on other sites
MaveriK
my personal opinion may or may not be valid, but from my perspective and point of view. I believe the model would look far more convincing, if the staff was instead put on the other hand. With his free hand occupying the direction of were his face is directed at. I call it symmetry, and balance. Complementing the whole flow and action of the entire piece. Right now I feel like he's looking at something while his free hand is telling the other cars to wait until the pedestrians are safely across the street. Point well taken brother, I have seen my fault and will strive to correct it. All kidding aside, that's solid advice and I thank you for it. So with that in mind I did a little bit of re-positioning to change his "safety" stance. To make the pose all the more convincing it would be best to swap hands, but I'm not all that good with green stuff and would think it a rather hard task to make his left hand into a right hand. As soon as I get the pose down he will be off to the paint booth, but it may be some time before any real progress is done. :tu: http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2162.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234475-njal-the-storm-caller/#findComment-2822694 Share on other sites

Can't wait to see him painted. :tu: Thank you as well brother, though I do cede that he's a darn fine model to begin with. Add that on top of the fact that in my opinion, resin is much easier to work with than metal, and anyone can come up with a good looking conversion. In all honesty I really like the idea of having resin instead of metal, and to that I say 'Good on ya GW'. Wulfebane
I think taking on one of the named characters and making it your own is great and I'm looking forward to seeing it finished. However, if you can bend his right leg in a little, that would make his pose look SO much better than the current lop-sided horse stance he's currently in. Also, with as much detail as the Njal model offers, tossing that particular open hand with little to no detail and an awkward gesture in the fingers onto him seems sloppy and doesn't give the model justice. You should see if you can scrounge up one of the open-palmed hands from the Grey Knight Terminator box set. They have much more detail and would work more seamlessly with the piece. Example (courtesy of thewarstore): http://www.thewarstore.com/media/ss_size2/B57-0726.jpg Last thing, and this is nit-picky, but I'd like to see the raven off the ground. Otherwise, I agree with everything Mav said. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234475-njal-the-storm-caller/#findComment-2822768 Share on other sites

Many more good ideas on how to improve the pose, thank you brother! Unfortunately after taking a closer look at the right leg I have decided that any alterations would require a much higher skill level than I currently have. If it was a matter of a quick cut and reposition I would be all over it. With both a pelt on the front and rear being molded with the leg I would have a lot of sculpting to do :) As for the hand, I also agree that the current hand is a little under par. I don't have the hands you suggested, but I know how to get a hold of one ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234475-njal-the-storm-caller/#findComment-2822979 Share on other sites
Chef Wulfen
how hard was it to take the raven feet off Njal? i was thinking of using him as a named runepriest in my GC and didnt want the raven feet on him but im not that skilled and just wanted to know how hard it was to do. FENRISÚLFUR
It wasn't all that hard, but you will most likely want/need to sculpt some fur from where the raven is sitting on his shoulder. Just work slow and be sure of your cuts and you will do just fine. FENRISÚLFUR
I had a hard time deciding on removing the raven too, but after the deed was done I was happy with the way it turned out. Wulfebane
Likely considerably easier to trim off the raven feet now that he's finecast. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234475-njal-the-storm-caller/#findComment-2823756 Share on other sites

Xeenos
I really like the idea of removing the raven so you can put it out there somewhere to be his Chooser.. like its supposed to be! The hand looks fine, imo, but i would give it some jaz so its not the focus. Big hand out in front will attract the eye, then you try to figure out what is going on with that hand and look at the rest of him and say "Huh?" What i would do is see about adding some magic effect to it.. like lightning coming out of his hand. Or something more simple might be to take a cotton ball and pull it apart so it kind of looks like smoke, if you put a toothpick through it to give it some support and then paint it.. i used this to make some pretty cool fire, i didn't use the toothpick, i just held the tip of the 'fire' up with a stick while i primed it. Let it try a little and it gets hard, yet its still kind of flexable so if you had it coming out of his hand it would sag, thus a tooth pick to keep it straight. After you get the basic effect down, you can paint it however you want, a sickly green is what jumps to my mind, and then place two small wolf like items in it.. like if you had some really small scale wolves to mix into it properly.. or maybe 2 wolf skulls? Could make it look like he is casting the twin wolf spell! Not that anyone ever uses it.. but still, looks cool. Though some basic lightning might be easier.. Hmm.. lots of modeling ideas.. something more simple would be to put a gun in his hand, you can clip the bit off his holster easily enough to make it look empty, then have it in his hand. Er.. what the hell kinda of terminator uses a bolt pistol? I looked it up and he totally has a bolt pistol in his war gear.. i guess that means he gets +1 attack for two melee weapons too? Olgerth Istaarn
Yes, Njal is the only Terminator in existence that uses a BP, and he gets a +1 attack in CC for it too. Which does little to alleviate his suckage if he does get stuck in. As for the model. After open arm was repositioned, he looks pretty damn good (before, he looked as if he was saying to someone "talk to the hand, beotch"). If I was doing this, I'd play with the base a bit to make it so his staff is planted on the ground rather than raised; that way it would look as if he slammed it down and then cast a big ol' spell with his other hand. You! SHALL! NOT! PASS!! and all that. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234475-njal-the-storm-caller/#findComment-2823984 Share on other sites

FENRISÚLFUR
Thanks for all of the positive comments and helpful tips. Tomorrow will hopefully yield some good progress on the conversion as I now have the Gk termie hand that I need. Once I have something to show I'll put a few more pics up. LoneSniperSG
Right now I feel like he's looking at something while his free hand is telling the other cars to wait until the pedestrians are safely across the street. Njal would make the coolest traffic cop EVER. To make the pose all the more convincing it would be best to swap hands, but I'm not all that good with green stuff and would think it a rather hard task to make his left hand into a right hand. As soon as I get the pose down he will be off to the paint booth, but it may be some time before any real progress is done. ;) Do what I did with my scratch RP and get ahold of a biker left hand to hold the staff. FENRISÚLFUR
So here's what I've got so far: The staff has been slightly re posed to have the top tipped away from Njal and also have the bottom of the staff touching the base so that it appears as if he slammed it down to increase the power of the spell he is casting. His left hand has been replaced with the more detailed GK termie hand and his left arm has been altered slightly to allow me to bring the hand more in line with his eye direction. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2173.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2172.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2171.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2170.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2169.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee149/jtaylorjtts/IMG_2168.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/234475-njal-the-storm-caller/#findComment-2825249 Share on other sites
LoneSniperSG
Looking better. Some filing, pinning and gluing and you'll be set with that pose. You may want to try straightening the staff though. FENRISÚLFUR
Those are on the list of things to do, right now I'm waiting for the green stuff to dry on the wrists.
