Painting Space Wolves question.

Grim of Chaos

Hi guys.

I'm currently building a Death Guard army but getting a little bored of Chaos. I've been thinking about starting a SW army. The problem I'm having is how to paint them?

I've watched a few videos on YouTube and as the chap on the video rightly said Space Wolves are a Baby Blueish colour and Games Workshop don't no longer stock this colour. I've always looked at Space Wolves as a Baby Blue/Azure blue but not sure where to look or buy the paint from. If any of you guys have any ideas on how to keep the Space Wolves Blue and not Grey please can you help me.

Thanks in advance Si.

You can buy various shades of "baby blue" (the name Amish Blue stands out in my memory) from any local arts & crafts store (ie Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and A.C. Moore). But, really, Space Wolves look much better in a light grey (the "pre-heresy") scheme.

Using a mix of half shadow grey and spacewolves grey (called Special grey at the 'Eavy metal studio) hightlighted with SW grey will get you halfway to the baby blue look and is the current army book colour scheme.

Then using a wash of really thinned Fenris Grey instead of the brown wash that GW currently recommends will "blue up" your wolves.

I tend to think that the "pre-heresy" scheme looks very generic and unless done extremely well looks more like an excuse to paint SW quickly and easily and lacks the ice-cold look of the current colour scheme.

Hi Grim

Try a 50/50 mix of Vallejo's sombre grey and wolfgrey these are the V-equivalents og shadow and SW from GW. I myself uae pure Sombre as base for my poodles and the mix for first highlight.

they're available and totally nice

Post pictures of your results plz

cheers

Silly but sincere question as I'm not familiar with them, but why use valljos... are they better, cheaper, both?

Vallejo paints have a vinyl base which give them an interesting sheen finish which many people like. Last I checked, Vallejo paints cost about a $1 less than GW. Vallejo makes several out of print GW paints and for metal it is great. http://www.miniaturewargaming.com/index.ph...mparison_guide/

There's been several debates between blue-grey and grey-grey here at the Fang. I think it's a little non-PC to claim one is better than the other... it's all preference. Regardless, the formulas so far are all popular methods.

I'm a bit confused by the OP saying GW doesn't stock the color. They still stock both Space Wolves Grey and Fenris Grey.. as well as Shadow Grey, which are all the cool greys, with Fortress and Codex being considered the neutral greys. Oddly, GW doesn't have any warm greys to my knowledge.

Another option could be to use P3 paints from Privateer Press. Underbelly Blue and Frostbite seem to sit on either side, in regard to brightness, to GW's Space Wolf Grey. Alongside that, Greatcoat Grey and/or Ironhull Grey make for nice greys that are close to neutral with only a hint of blue.

All in all, it comes down to your preference and how you choose to mix your ratios (if at all). I don't think I've yet seen anyone use the exact same formula for painting Space Wolves. Just as Space Wolves are unique and diverse, it seems how us players paint them are equally diverse.

Thanks, that's the sort of info I was after

Dheneb Stone?

I'm not really sure what a "warm grey" is. Grey is grey. Is grey.

I suppose Dheneb Stone could be considered a warm grey.. though it's too bright imo, and would be better off considered more of an off-white.

As to grey is grey.. it's literally impossible to physically see a neutral color. Light plays a key role into what our eyes interpret and is the main contributor to tonal values. You can say the sky is blue, but depending on the time of day, the sky can be considered a warm toned light (causing cool shadows) or a cool toned light (causing warm shadows).

As an example to grey is grey is grey, tell me... which of these isn't grey?

...............Warm..............................Cool................

Literally, books could be written on the color theory of "grey" but I'll leave it here.

Hmm. I might want to try some of those warm greys on my IG army... Codex-grey tanks with Astronomican Grey concrete dust on them looks very flat. Here's another thing to think of. Concrete? There's thousands of different colors of it depending on where the rock material comes from.

I need some of the lightest shade of warm grey.. yeah.

I use a different paint scheme than whats been stated and i think with colored shoulderpads it looks quite striking on the table top. Adeptus Battlegrey foundation over black primer. Then i use Codex grey wash the recesses with badab black wash (normally need a few layers of the wash to get the darkness i want) then i go over the areas that got badab black splashed on it with codex grey.

Here's where I digress a bit. If i'm going for a smooth looking highlight i used a 1:1 codex grey: Fortress grey highlight then i slowly fade up to a fortress grey extreme highlight. or if i'm looking for a more TT quality then i will just highlight with pure fortress grey. Both look pretty good imo.
