GK Librarian- best kit?

Stock armaments. 3-4 Psychic powers depending on your army. You may wish to take a halberd, but he only has 2 attacks. There's no point. Use the Nemesis Force Sword to give him 4++ in CC. You shouldn't be positioning him where he can be attacked directly anyway.

The rest really depends on your army.

Going to take 4 Conversion beamers, face a lot of enemy infiltrators or play an all DS force? Stock up on Servo Skulls.

Going to face lots of Psykers/Daemons? Empyrean Brain Mines coupled with Psyk-out 'nades are pure win.

Which powers do you take? Sticking the Libby with a unit quipped with Falchions, take Quickening. Using him to shield units, take the Shrouding. But the upgrade to Mastery Level 3 is rarely worth it.

With the recent FAQ, taking a Warding Stave might not be such a bad idea. Gives you a save versus Perils if used in the Assault Phase. And helps keep your relatively weak IC alive.

What does the brain mines do ?

I forget the technicals...pretty sure the target (only get to affect one target, mind you...in BtB with Libby) needs to make an initiative test (possibly toughness). Upon failing whatever test they must take, they don't get to swing during that Assault Phase. They're not a sure thing, but they are pretty nasty when they go off.

I've had pretty good success with this guy;

Librarian w/warding stave, 'Might', 'Quicksilver', 'Shrouding', 'Sanctuary'

(205 points)

I choose 'Quicksilver' because my Dreadknight often needs it to get the jump on enemy monsters (I4 sucks). Warding stave keeps him alive in close-combat (he will always get picked out, I gurantee it, and 4+ from the sword is woeful by comparison), and as others have pointed out, you can even use it to shrug off 'Perils' wounds in the Assault Phase (pretty relevant, as half your powers are cast then).

Brain Mines are like Psychostroke nades, they're more for lulz than actual effectiveness. If you have the points spare for such things, I'd rather take servo-skulls (if you haven't already). D6 scatter for your Deepstrikers is huge, you pay a tiny increase in HQ to get what Blood Angels do on your Knights. They do get destroyed with annoying regularity, but thats why you take multiples.

Yeah I take 'Warp Rift' on occasion, it's one of those 'cool but not 100% required' powers. I've had some insane moments with it (one shotted a Monolith, after a perfect Deepstrike next to it), and other times people just dodge it (pesky Eldar and Marines, with their above-average Initiative).

Um...unless I'm mistaken, Quicksilver isn't target-based; it gives the Librarian and whatever unit he's attached to I10.

The Librarian cannot attach to the Dreadknight, as the Dreadknight is a unit that is always comprised of one model, per the IC rules, BRB.

Long story short, you can't boost the DK to I10. :)

I run my Librarian:

Warding Stave, Might of Titan, Shrouding, Sanctuary. Having a good chance to negate a POTW in assault when I'm casting Might of Titan and Hammerhand twice a game turn is a good thing. Plus he's hard to kill in said assault. Shrouding and Sanctuary are nice defensive powers for when I'm moving in to attack or holding my ground.

The power says 'any friendly unit within 6 inches', just like for 'Might'. So no, you are wrong :cuss

What would be four good powers to use against Daemons? Right now I'm thinking Dark Excommunication, Quicksilver, Sanctuary and Warp Rift. I'm specifically wondering about Dark Excommunication. Has anyone here used it to good effect? Thanks.

I would only take 'Dark Excommunication' after you've already given him the four 'must-haves'; 'Might' for smashing Soulgrinders and monsters, 'Quicksilver' for slapping down Slanneshi units, 'Sanctuary' for utterly screwing all non-Slanneshi assault units, 'Shrouding' to prevent Soulgrinders and Ku-Gath from throwing bombs onto your guys. Even then, it's pretty situational (Bloodletters and Bloodcrushers hate you for taking away their shiny power weapons, but most other Daemon units have built-in bonuses, Gifts are often unrelated to their close-combat attacks).

I thought this would be a good place to ask my question, forgive me if I am wrong.

Vortex of Doom seems like an amazing ability until you get to the "place the template over your Libby, it won't scatter in this case" part. Is a str10 ap1 psychic power not worth the risk?? It seems like taking it could really help out, or hinder you. I am wanting to try it out, has anybody else been so bold?? And is so, could you regale us with your story??

On topic: my as yet to get used Libby sports a sleek Warding Stave, the 2011 model. Fuel injected Shrouding, all wheel Sanctuary, and a Might of Titan fuel efficiency.

End of Line

I've actually been debating this myself as well. 'Warp Rift' is at point-blank, whereas 'Vortex' at least has some range to it (and it does 'real' damage, not relying on Initiative). I guess most people don't like the risk of nuking the Librarian (he only has a 5+ invul) and his retinue (they also only have 5+ invul) if things go badly.

Also, Librarians are usually busy chaps, with regards to sorcery. In my turn, he's casting 'Might' and 'Hammerhand', or a 'Quicksilver' if someone needs it. In the enemy turn, he's gimping their fun with 'Shrouding' and 'Sanctuary'. So, I don't even know if when it's my Shooting phase, and that cluster of Marines is nearby...that I'll even wanna use my 'haha eat warp' blast.

From an opponents perspective, I hate 'Vortex'. My Tau have had many bad run ins with it, because it melts Crisis suits and tanks. You can be assured, if you pass the test and it doesn't scatter too badly, your opponent will hate you for it as well :(

You need the after-market 'Quicksilver' nos tank man. He flies like the wind with that installed

And happily so. I10 DKs and Dreads sound like fun to me.

Yeah, beating down Emperor's Champions (passed the DK's force weapon test, then gave him 'Quicksilver') is pretty satisfying. My local Daemon player still refuses to play me though, so I have no idea how he goes against other MC's (I'm the only Chaos Marine player in the group, haven't fought Tyranids in a long while either).
