red_starrise
We played 1750, I ran the following list: HQ: Rune Priest - jump pack, living lightning, jaws Wolf Priest - terminator armor Elites: Wolf Scouts - 7, sniper rifle, missile launcher, melta, mark of the wulfen, bolter, 3 bp/ccw. WGPL - power fist, combi-plasma Dreadnought - assault cannon/storm bolter Troops: Grey Hunters - 9, MotW, plasma gun, power weapon, wolf banner, rhino. WGPL - PF/combi-melta Grey Hunters - 9, MotW, melta gun, power weapon, wolf banner, rhino. WGPL - TH/combi-plasma Blood Claws - 15, 2 flamers Heavy Support: Long Fangs - 6, 3 ML, 2 LC. WGPL - Terminator armor, cyclone, storm shield Long Fangs - 5, 2 HB, 2 PC Whirlwind He ran (to the best of my recollection): HQ: Tyrant & 1 guard Tervigon Elites: Lictor 2 Zoanthrope in mycetic spore 3 hive guard Troops: 6 warriors 6 stealers & broodlord big swarm of termagants big swarm of hormagaunt Fast Attack: 6 spore mines Heavy Support: Trygon Game was seize ground, dawn of war. Played over our shop's glacier table which is a 4x8 table w/ a the back (or right from my perspective) 1/3 being a stair step pattern of 4 ledges. A river of ice runs through the center of the table long ways & counts as dangerous terrain. The terrain was pretty sparse w/ just mostly a few trees & small rock outcroppings. There was a bastion in the upper far right. Objectives were laid out w/ 2 on the lower ground, one of which was near the center, the other almost in his corner. The final was behind the bastion. He deployed his termagants & tyrant w/ his lone guard about dead center of the table & his gaunts up near the bastion. I put both squad of grey hunters in their rhinos down in range to cover both lower objectives & the rune priest between them. He got first turn & I failed to seize the initiative so he began slogging his varmints across the table. He immediately lost 5 to the ice out of 30! The rest of his army slogged onto the table, aside from the trygon, lictor & the zoanthropes who would pop in later. His spores drifted around & blew up on my rhinos save for 3. The tervigon spawned 5 gaunts, rolled doubles & ran out (yay!) My long fangs hoofed it on in the lower corner to cover the objective on his side of the table along w/ the whirlwind. The Blood Claws & Wolf Priest came on w/ a blood curdling howl. Supported by the dread. Both rhinos advanced to disembark their hunters. During shooting the gaunts were hit pretty hard by the whirlwind & the rhino storm bolters. Turn 2 began w/ his termagants advancing to lose 2 more crossing the ice. The tyrant took a wound as well. Shooting from the warriors & brood guard failed to do anything to my rhinos. His trygon showed right next to his warriors. He ran his termagants & charged my long fangs w/ heavy bolters & plasma, choosing to avoid my blood claws. The long fangs passed their Ld for counter-assault, stood their ground, lost a man & then fought back, killing 5. My scouts showed up & I rolled a 5 so I chose to place them on his table edge w/ intervening cover but out of ranged w/ their rapid fire/assault weapons & unable to fire heavy weapons. The rune priest bounded over the rhino to land just out of range of the shadow in the warp. Grey Hunters all disembarked. The missile/las long fangs focussed fire on the tyrant & his guard, injuring both to 1 wound each. The dread shot at the tyrant & guard, rolling 2 hits, no wounds. The Rune Priest used Jaws to obliterate the tyrant & guard. Las/Missile long fangs opened up on the trygon dealing 5 wounds. The Blood Claws charged the termagants, lost a couple, ate them alive & the single surviving long fang performed a sweeping advance to obliterate what was left. Claws consolidated toward the objective the warriors held just behind their grey hunter brethren. Turn 3 the rest of his reserves showed up. The mycetic spore & zoanthropes landed right next to the surviving long fang pack leader while his genestealers arrived & assaulted my long fangs who took a beating but held (down to the pack leader, one missile launcher & the wolf guard). The zoanthropes piled out to try & melt some blood claws while the spore whipped the pack leader who survived. The zoanthropes succeeded but thanks to the wolf tail talisman borne by the wolf priest only 1 was lost, despite 7 being hit. His tervigon & her gaunts headed for my scouts. Trygon fired its barbed strangler at my grey hunters & failed to kill anything. The 2nd grey hunter pack moved up & claimed their objective. Rune priest leapt up the glacial mountain to use jaws on the tervigon but failed his psychic test. Scouts poured fire into the brood guard & did one wound. Whirlwind did 3 wounds to the warriors. Blood Claws charged the zoanthropes & wiped them then consolidated toward the stealers. Dread fired on the brood guard & missed. Turn 4 was going to be our final turn due to time constraints. His gaunts advanced toward my scouts but were still out of range. Brood Guard fired venom cannons at rhino & melted the storm bolter. The other rhino was stunned. Trygon moved forward & fell through the ice to its doom. The stealers mopped up my long fangs & chose to run back toward the table corner to prevent being shot apart. My Rune Priest w/ a bounding leap landed on the roof of the bastion overlooking the gaunt held objective but not in LoS due to being on the opposite side. Grey Hunters, Blood Claws all fired on the stealers who went to ground behind cover getting a 3+ save so only 1 was felled. Knowing it was the last turn I elected to charge the stealers w/ my claws who killed 3 & lost 4. My Rune Priest ran to the other side of the rooftop to contest the objective & the game ended in a tie of 1 objective held each, 1 contested. I do feel that, had the game lasted for another 1+ turns I could have won this game as, I wouldn't have charged the stealers before another turn of firing at them due to them being pinned from going to ground & I would have moved my grey hunters up, fired pistols & melta at the warriors & then assaulted them to claim the objective they were sitting on. I'd use living lightning on the gaunts guarding the bastion objective & then charged them w/ the priest if any survived & held. The scouts would have continued firing on the brood guard w/ the whirlwind to keep them out of the fight w/ the grey hunters & warriors. All in all, it was a good game, I wish we could have played it out to its end. I'll call it a draw, but it did look like it would have ended in a SW victory.
