Colour Scheme

Recommended Posts

Urban camo is typically greys; that said, Marines don't bother with camo. :cuss (e.g. basically every chapter that's not in black.)

Off the cuff, here are some thoughts I have:

  • Spray paint grey, white shoulder plates, black trim (ideally every edge, at least around shoulder plates, kneecaps, wrists, and belt), black or white chest deco, white shoulder plates. Go with green eyes. Black wash in the recesses. All much easier than it sound with a steady hand and some patience.
  • Want simpler? Spray paint grey, black trim on belt and shoulder plates, green eyes, black chest element, done.

I definitely recommend patience and detail over "get these things on the table"...but it's acceptable to play with them at "mostly painted" while you work on them. :cuss

Use the army painter on this site to see what this and other schemes might look like. :D (The "SM Painter" button, top of the site.) Nice thing about the painter is that it enforces the sort of standard color patterns on you so your marine templates come out looking like people might expect. Doesn't mean you can't "go against the grain" and try something unique, but if you're unsure, it's a nice place to start.

That's another thing, I have no clue how to do washes properly. They either end up all splotchy and streaky, or there's no visible effect.

The easiest way (esp. for a rookie) to do washes is to pick up a citadel pot of your wash of choice. It's very easy as it's mixed for you, requires no additional thinning, and goes on easy. :cuss

That said, you can - with some patience - add substantial water to your own paint on your own palette and wash with that. I've been painting for two years...started doing it this way, and now if I want a proper wash I go with a GW pot.

Painting is about patience; not about speed. If you load up your brush and quickly mop your entire model, excessive amounts of the wash will pool together like rain drops on your car and leave very unpleasant splotchy effects. Use a small brush (larger than you need for detail but small enough to get in the recesses, like between his chin and his armor for instance) and put wash in the crevices and along edges. :)

I definitely recommend a gray spray paint to base coat with, even if you do something like painting the entire model in Graveyard Earth.

By the by, are you using straight up acryllics like GW or Valejo? If you're using Testor's, you're going to need legit thinning agents (which I can't speak for, I've never used them).
