Heresy Death Guard

Recommended Posts

So after a eventful local swap meet I came into own about 30 or so Plague Marine metal models. I had never dabbled in metal models (mostly due to GW cost) but now that I have some I figure I will give Death Guard a go. After some research on-line I came to accept I was more a fan of the Heresy era (white/green) then I was of the current mostly green color scheme. Here is my first tester model for the army. C&C appreciated.

Sorry the photo's are not the greatest. I can take others during the day if more lightning is needed (I don't have any sort of photo booth or anything for those crisp clean photos I see)

Lookin' good! You could probably hit the rivets in the trim with a more obvious highlight, but other than that, it's quite nice.

Every time I see one of these Plague Marine Havoc models, I get so jealous, by the way. I was too much of a newb in the hobby when they came and went, and haven't been able to grab any up since. Great find at a swap meet.

Here are some of the plague bearers I am going to run with them. I went with a fleshy color for two reasons. One I wanted to still stir clear of full green anything in the army. Two I am hoping with the flesh color there will be a sense of "once human" to them, trying to portray the imagry of corrupted souls, not always have been a demon of nurgle.

I am going to take your advice Plague Dave but go about it a different way. I think I am going to back track and put some browns around the rivits. Given them a dirty feel. Should provide enough contracts to given them a precieved highlight without going any lighter on the green. If that doesn't work I will do the brown and do the highlight and see how that plays out.

So I am trying to pen down a 2K competitive (or at least as competitive as we can get with our current dex) list, and I feel as if we either have issues with quantity or quality but never able to reach a satisfactory level of both. As an example below is a rough sketch of a list that I am painting up but it feels “meh”. Like there is no true OMG punch to the list:

Nurgle DP w/ Wings

Nurgle DP w/ Wings

GUCO

5 PMs w/ Meltas & Fist in Rhino

5 PMs w/ Meltas & Fist in Rhino

10 Zerkers w/ Fist

5 PMs w/ Plasmas & Fist

5 PMs w/ Plasmas & Fist

5 PBs

5 PBs

Landraider with DP & Combi-Melta

Obliterator (one)

Obliterator (one)

Now with this list have quantity but it feels very lack luster in quality. Anti-Mech is bare minimum for most games. There just strikes me as no major “OMG fear this unit” to the list. Now I could sacrifice some units. Tool up princes with breath/warp/both, fill in more Oblits, beef up the home base plasma squads, but then when quality comes into play quantity goes out the window.

Have you experienced this before? If so how do you deal with it? Am I Just missing some uber elite synergy in the chaos codex that gives you that quality and quantity in just the right combo?

You may want to submit a new army list topic, that way it will get more attention.

Quick comments on your army.

I would go with 2x2 oblits for some added range.

I would consolidate some of the PM together or drop the power fist from the 5 man squads. 4 guys isn't enough cushion to reliably be able to hit with it turn after turn.

'Zerkers can drop down to 8, more fluffy and saves you points.

Most of the conversions I did is just kit bashing with a little green stuffing here and there (I have never been able to master the substance.

Conversion notes:

- Fire ball in hand is the chopped off end of a Skaven Pit Abomindation braizer arm

- Head is a combination of two pieces. The flute of the head is a Khorne Blood Crusher horn cut off and flipped around so that the mouth of the horn is glued to the neck. The Head/Eyes of the Fly lord is in fact the adrenal gland for a MC from Tyranids

- One shoulder iis bear of shoulderpad cause I flipped it upside down and glued it between chest joint and legs to give him a "pot belly" look. grey stuffed behind it to joint it to body.

- Blade arm is hand cut off with a trimmed Dark Eldar Raider Rutter glued in and green stuffed to give him the flesh "stump" of a hand.

So after some time relaxing from the NOVA Open 2011 I am back at the painting desk to add/refurbish more to my Death Guard. And low and behold we Chaos players get a new model added to or collections via the Fantasy range.

So with some cuts here and green stuff there I decided to take this new plastic kit and 40K it up. Below is the finished result.

He is going to be my aspiring champion for my aggressive Double Melta team, and in games were I feeled my Great Unclean One he will most likely be my summon on guy.

Below are the Transports I have so far for my Death Guard. All still need alot of highlighting and detail work but they are good enough for the tables (which is good cause I used them at the Nova Open this year and soon to come Blob Park Tournament in MD next weekend).

Land Raider

Nurgaddon is complete.

Had to use the Nurgling in the back as a counter balance for the model, least he keep falling face forward in a stiff breeze.

  • 1 month later...

His weapon is a shaft of a space wolf thunder hammer with the braizer armor trimmed down from a Skaven Hell Pit Abomination.

The flames are a scorpion green worked up to a mix of scorpion green and bleached bone with a final highlight of white.
