Tonight's madness

Finally, I get to play my favorite wolves again. I'm at work, so this will lack all the details. Basically the quick and dirty.

I love terminators. I love walking tanks with a bloodthirsty wolf inside.

So, it's 1500 points tonight. Chances are, I'll be facing gk, ba, ultras, de, or daemons.

It's been two months, which has left me tons of time with jack handy and his deep thoughts. Before those forced break, I had started netlisting unintentionally. I mean I'd lose a match, then go back to various forums and blogs for tips. On paper, I had solid balanced lists, but no feel cord their function, and this honestly made my losses even more frustrating. How could this list win tourneys but not for me? I mean I always did well in fantasy, with a decent amount of wins with my wood elves. I mean c'mon, I won with wood elves!?

The problem wasn't the lists, it's been me. Using other peoples lists or suggestions don't always work. I have to see the battle and have confidence in what my units can handle. I have to be able to visualize the battle properly.

So tonight I'm going back to one of my favorites. Loganwing.

Logan

Rune priest

6 termies with arjac and a cyclone

6 termies with a cyclone

5 termies with a heavy flamer

6 long fangs with 5 missiles with the cyclone attached x 2

Shields, hammers and fists dispersed throughout. It's my combination of Spam and fun. Win or lose, it'll be good fun. Real good fun. Bleeding out my ears good fun. If I win, you can count on me to tell the tale of what Logan killed!

Edit: apparently when in a rush my grammar "don't always work" sorry, but editing on my phone is a hitch.

Way to go man. I salute you and hope you reap many wins. It's all about the fun and totally respect you for running a list that you enjoy and not caring about the result. Lists should just be used for inspiration on the net, we are all individuals with different play styles. What works for one may not work for another. You have to enjoy it and I think you have that part nailed.

I'm rooting for you, and I like the list a lot.

Welcome back Nrth.

Regarding netlisting and losing; When I got back into 40k after taking a prettty big break, I had been playing a pretty slick 13th Co. I was praying to Russ and the Allfather every night when news of the new codex came out for just a page or two to continue playing 13th Co. Alas neither of the arses listened to me so I had no clue what I was going to play and had to rediscover how I wanted to play the Wolves. It was a fairly long and EXPENSIVE trip.

1. Started out with a pod/mech list. 5 GH pods and LR with WGTDA. Intersting but not for me.

2. Dual Thunderlord netlist. Meh.

3. Razorspam. Meh

4. Mech. Hmmm.

5. Thunderlord?Mech. Ahhhhhhhh.

Frankly I did it pretty wrong but fortunately I could afford it. This has led to pretty much all the advice I have given regarding new players, get the basic HQ and 2 Troops down and get some gaming in to see what you like/dislike. However you are already a pretty established gamer, although maybe not so much with the Wolves, so I would off different advice.

You have put up your old trusty list. It is something you like to play, but more importantly you know HOW it plays. Netlisting is more complex then most people think. It isn't just a matter of having the models equaling insta-wins. It isn't even a matter of just knowing what the units in a netlist can do. It is completely about knowing how those units work together to win with said netlist.

So back to your trusty Loganwing. You know how it works, you know how it plays, you know how it all comes together. The next step is just refinement. Get your games in with the list and take some mental notes of not only things that are not working so well, but also things that work TOO well. It is easy to see when a unit is just not cutting the butter, but a quite difficult to acknowledge when a unit uses a lascannon to cut that same stick of butter.

So once you start getting some honest observations down, make small changes where you think they might be needed. A unit composition here or some different weapon combinations there. Small changes compiled with already knowing the army will help keep you successful and having fun. Wide sweeping changes will toss out what you already know and not allow you to accurately judge the changes.

This will allow you to play an army that you know/enjoy and that you have refined for effectiveeness. If I could do it all over with what I know now, I defintely would have started out this way.

Well said Ramses. I try to stay away from net list myself. I only learn from them, but never do carbon copies from it. Better to have my own touch and style in my army list, and learn (grow) from there, than have other people tell me what to do and how to run them. They might as well roll my dice for me if I'm gonna start copying net list.

Thats deep, I like it. :tu: And I am on that same page too.

Never did get to try a full carbon copy list since I only could play with what I owned. Now that I can afford or again, I'm finishing out every little aspect of my wolves. I'm so stoked.

The night took a twist. Only 3 showed up out of our usual 6. Gotta love the hardcore guy who has codex swapped so much he's too burned out to paint or assemble anymore.

Onto the night. We reworked it to a 3k game, 2 on one defend. Since I had 4k with me I was given the task of slapping together a list in a few minutes and defend the center. There was much murder make of chaos daemons and dark eldar. This was a first against those hooligans, those bastards sure now how to dance.

The game ran a bit long, and as the other two had kids we called it after turn 4. At the time I thought all was lost, since I had to be within three inches of the objective and in turn 4 all of my grey hunter loaded razors died in glorious combat. (My mark wolf rolled for Max attacks, and between hit and wound missed all of them on bloodletters. I rolled 6, and had a saga in my mind started for him till he failed). Looking back today though, I had destroyed almost all of his dark lances, the rest were on the far side of the table, with the tower in the way, and Logan, arjac and a couple of wolf guard still lived and were close enough to load into the land raider. I could have popped them back in and weathered the storm of attacks till the end of 5 for the tie.

Good times were had (minus a drop pod dropping off the table) but I'm still hot for a proper game. It burns.
