40k & SW Rookie Question

Hello All,

I have only played 40k once with a friends Dark Angels Space Marines against another friends Imperial Guard. Prior to that, we have been playing Necromunda for the past several months. I have decided to build a Space Wolves army but am having difficulty putting the all the pieces together. So far, I have purchased the Black Reach box mainly for the rule book and the Marines several months ago. I am planning to sell the Orks to one of my friends. This week, I also picked up the Space Wolves Battleforce box.

So my questions are:

1. Can the Marines and Terminator's in the Black Reach box be used as Space Wolves? If so, any suggestions on how to do this since they appear to my novice eyes to be pretty generic and do not sport the Space Wolves look.

2. Since the 20 Marines in the Space Wolves battleforce box can be built as 3 different types of figures is there a "best" way to do this to maintain flexibility as I add more pieces to my army? I do know from reading here that Grey Hunters are preferred over Blood Claws

3. Any suggestions for what I should acquire next? This is a future thing, since I have plenty to build and paint for the moment. And since I just had to buy school supplies for the kids today!

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

RC

1. Why not? what's stopping you from calling them or painting them as Space Wolves? let alone gradually and eventually adding-on small SW bits and pieces in the future

2. Grey Hunters. Or read this = http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...c=224618&hl I really hate telling people what's best. It comes down to personal taste and style. I try to stay away from net list also, only because I'd rather find my own identity and learn from my own experience, not to mention I like my own individuality.

3. shopping for wolves = http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...c=233656&hl

Ahhh whelps, they will never learn how to use the search function, and are always eager to just post right away like true Blood Claws, than rather think and research like a Grey Hunter. LOL I'm kidding.. I think? all good and welcome to the FANG!

There are several threads like this tucked away in this forum (The Fang!), and the elders here will likely promptly tell you to go search for them.

What to get next is all based on preference. You'll find that there are army building schemes like "mech armies" or "gunlines" or more SW specific like "razorspam" etc. Bottom line, it's all up to you. One of the great things about Wolves is they can be run so many different ways and still be completely viable. To figure out which direction you like best, try reading up on some sample tactica compiled by Darkseer on his blog found here.

You can't go wrong with more SW pack boxes. The boxes are straight-up power armour troops with space wolf flare, so you can meet any of the codex demands, such as Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, Wolf Guard in PA, or HQ choices in PA. Long Fangs are the only sticking point since heavy weapons come from the Devastator box (or bought seperately).

As for the Black Reach marines, mix and match! Obviously, there's nothing wrong with taking a space marine model without wolfy bits and painting them as Space Wolves, but it's completely acceptable to mix parts to achieve the affect you want. In fact, several people prefer mixing SW parts with standard SM parts so as to not give an impression of way too much "wolf" clutter.

Bottom line, it's your army and you can do whatever you want with it. You can paint it red and still call it a Wolves army. Granted, people may not like it, but it's all your call.

And lastly, welcome to the Fang!

Hello All,

1. Can the Marines and Terminator's in the Black Reach box be used as Space Wolves? If so, any suggestions on how to do this since they appear to my novice eyes to be pretty generic and do not sport the Space Wolves look.

As MaveriK said, no prob there. As far as makin them more "space wolfey", that'll be rough, as the AoBR marines are only 2 pieces if i remember right, so it'll be hard to do anything with them. What I would suggest is put them together, practice your paint schemes on them, and get the game down using them. Then, begin to phase them out with models from the battleforce/space wolf pack once you are more comfortable painting your scheme and know more of what you want to run.

2. Since the 20 Marines in the Space Wolves battleforce box can be built as 3 different types of figures is there a "best" way to do this to maintain flexibility as I add more pieces to my army? I do know from reading here that Grey Hunters are preferred over Blood Claws

As far as maximum flexibility goes, Grey Hunters are hard to beat. They're a great versatile troop choice. I would probably proxy both to see which fits best to your specific playstyle.

3. Any suggestions for what I should acquire next? This is a future thing, since I have plenty to build and paint for the moment. And since I just had to buy school supplies for the kids today!

Space Wolf Packs are great, as you can use them to make Long Fangs, Blood Claws, Grey Hunters, etc. Lots of cool bits and stuff. A SW Termie box is never bad. I would get some razorback boxes, as you can make a rhino or a razorback out of it to fit whatever situation you need.

The AoBR Marines have the unfortunate distinction of having an Ultramarine arrow molded onto their shoulder pads... you'll probably want to chop those off and file down, and even then they don't look very smooth. Other than that, though, they look alright in a SW army with the addition of some Wolf bits.
The Space Wolf pack set is chock full of wolfy bits, far too many to use on 10 models (unless you go completely overboard). There will be enough left over to change the appearance of the AoBR models enough to make them look like wolves. As far as the tactical arrow moulded onto the shoulder pads of the AoBR marines goes, how are your greenstuff skills? Make some fur/skins to cover them up. A couple of the shoulder pads from the wolf pack set have this done already so it won't look out of place. Once painted as wolves and with some wolfy bits added it'll be hard to notice which is which. Spread the AoBR models through your other packs to make it even more difficult to tell them apart.

With a sharp knife, you can get rid of the Tactical arrow:

1] Cut into the base of the arrow until you get level with the proper part of the shoulder pad. Now the bottom of the arrow is separate from the shoulder pad rim.

2] Peel down from the tip of the arrow, towards the base of the arrow.

This might take a few goes.

3] Then scrape with the knife to get rid of the dregs.

On mine you cannot tell they ever had arrows, and that was before paint was applied.

You need a sharp knife, as a blunt one is dangerous.

Also, if it has a little sideways flex, that is better. The stiff blades in Xacto knives and Stanley knives are not cut for this. The extendable ones that you can break off sections of blade are delightful.

Thanks all for the welcome and the tips!

I did do a search before I posted a new topic. I guess either I just didn't look far enough back or my searching skills need improvement! Probably a little of both!

I think I needed a little encouragement since the friends I play with have never played SW before. It has become apparent how different SW are based on the questions I ask trying to learn not just the SW but 40k as well.

Over the weekend, I was able to put together the marines in the Black Reach box. Will probably start putting together the SW battleforce box some time this week as time permits.

RC

do you have some pictures of those grey hunters made up from the AOBR-box whelp? i'm interested in what you made from it ;)

a good start is to get the SW codex and as mentioned the battleforce

to help you a little i'll throw together a small list using only units available in the AOBR-set and the battleforce that you might be able to try out against your friend

-rune priest(can be represented by the AOBR-captain); pick 2 psychic powers you like, runic armour 120pts

-wolf guard pack 253pts

Tactical Dreadnought Armour ,Power Weapon, Storm Bolter

TDA, Power Fist, SB

TDA, PF,SB

TDA,PF,SB

TDA,PF,SB

Power Armour; Thunderhammer, combimelta (can be made from the battle force and some convertin/count as)

-10 grey hunters, 2 Plasma Guns (available in the battleforce) 160pts

-10 grey hunters, 2 PG 160 pts

-dreadnought, Multi Melta, Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon, Extra Armour, Droppod 155 pts

-5 wolf scouts, Close Combat Weapon, Bolt pistol, melta bombs, 1 Melta gun (you won't have any meltaguns but might be able to get them from a friend, if not just leave the arms of one of he scouts to represent him having the meltagun) 110pts

that's some958pts, depening on what you like you might pick a lone wolf for fun, or decide to make the wolf guard unit bigger.

it's not an optimal list, but it's a list you'll be able to play with without buying anything else.
