Heralds ...

So, my Black Legion isn't so fun to game in the current codex, and frankly I'm a little unhappy with the colour scheme. Daemons might be a fun army to play, bringing colour to the table-top in more ways than one. I've also got a head start with a #keeper of secrets, 8#bloodletters, 12#deamonettes and 15#plaguebearers. While I think I'll eventually use all the new models, this is a great way to game. A friend (of a friend) is also buildig a Blood Angels (I think) army, and am looking for patrol-clashes and a painting buddy.

So a few questions:

1) Heralds - am I supposed to convert them from regular one's? Greenstuffing capes, mighty horns or whatnot?

2) Are they viable? I've read (and surmised) that the Khornite Heralds are pretty over-priced considering one gets several pretty regular Bloodletters as it is.

3) Are you supposed to make steeds and chariots for them?

bonus: 4) Deamon Princes, the HEAVY-choice, are they the same model as the HQ-choice for Chaos Space Marines?

Khorne Heralds are indeed not really worth it, excepting Skulltaker on a juggernaut.

Tzeentch Heralds are really useful on chariots, with bolt, we are legion and master of sorcery. The Blue Scribes are kinda meh, but some people like using them.

Slaanesh Heralds are kinda meh but become somewhat useful when riding chariots. Masque is nice but will get shot up immediately during the enemy's next turn.

Nurgle Heralds are pants, excepting Epidemius in a mostly Nurgle army, who instead becomes one of the best characters in the game due to his tally rule.

As for models, we only have the three special characters, the metal Khorne Herald on juggernaut, and soon there's a really expensive Tzeentch Herald on disc coming out (Finecast resin). Best option is using converted plastic models. There are a couple of threads in this section that cover this subject.

Daemon princes are indeed the same models as those from the Chaos Marine range. If you're going to use them, I suggest you try them out in really cheap loadouts - 150 points or less. Otherwise they'll be point sinks that'd be better replaced by greater daemons.

You also have a nice start to your army. I suggest getting some more anti tank and another box of letters - just 8 will not make it into combat, but when you bring a horde of 15+ power weapon totting daemons, watch the enemy soil their trousers.

Listen to eFTy he knows his Daemon stuff ;) . Couple things though, I'd read up on this here it will give you an excellent idea of what units are good and what not: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=182813

Personally I'm a fan of skulltaker and a shooty tzeentch herald along with a GD, usually a BT although a KOS would be just as good. My favorite list though is the daemonzilla list someone posted. Great fun to play! ;)

As a pure slaanesh player, I can tell you that slaanesh heralds are worthless unless you stick them on a chariot, which you would need a conversion for. Even then, they don't usually work well unless supported by other fast units.

In the Daemon codex, a Daemon Prince is a heavy choice. Here's why.

Compared to a space marine, which Daemon Princes start as, a Prince is almost an object of worship, he is so awesomely gifted by the gods he follows.

Daemons do not have the same perspective. Greater Daemons are actually demigods, who can create miniature, short-lived personal realms and servants from their massive power, and demand fealty by being the most massively powerful thing you can find in the warp short of the gods themselves.

So Princes are space marines who have ascended to Daemonhood. Big whoop. Whatever. We're already daemons, so we don't really care.

Actually, Daemon Princes don't have to start out as Chaos Space Marines. They can originally have been any champion of Chaos. For example, Doombreed, the oldest and strongest of Khorne's daemon princes, existed from a time way before the creation of the Space Marines (many speculate that he was Ghenghis Khan). I think in tabletop terms a former Space Marine prince is represented by the Iron Hide wargear, though of course this can also apply to princes gifted with some kind of heavy armor by their gods, and not just mutated ancient power armor. But anyway, even regular humans can become daemon princes, though not very likely.

But you are right in that Greater Daemons are usually higher on the scale than a Prince. That's not an absolute rule, however. Angron, who is a daemon prince, is more powerful and more respected among Khorne's followers than many Bloodthirsters, and he even has a bodyguard of dozens of them. Of course, then you get to a Thirster like An'ggrath, who can dismember Titans, and suddenly princes don't seem as scary anymore.

Which just proves what a monster an =][= Lord can be. Since Hector Rex, the tiny little human, beat An´ggrath back into the warp in fair 1on1 combat.
