The Phoenix Guard have risen at last

Recommended Posts

Ok brothers, the last time I posted some W.I.P picts on this forum was when I first joined. For far too long I left my models in a huge box under the bed but now, I have officially now got weekends off & have actually managed to get a phone with a camera so I now have no excuses not to get stuff done & start posting!!!!!

This is my Phoenix Guard Chapter that I have been working on both model wise & story wise. This has been an idea that has been swimming in my head for at least two or more years but unfortunately has been very long (& slow) in the making.

I used a 1mm thick piece of plasticard to extend te chest put on second thoughts, perhaps it bulks out the chest a little too much? For the chest armour, a very nice little tip I picked up from Pig of Sparta - I used one of the terminator groin plates & centered it where the belt buckle should be. This was used as a guide for gauging the depth of GS as well as to help bulk out the armour & define where the bottom of the chest plate would be. Can you spot the problem I have?

Look at the right foot, only when I applied the GS to the left foot had it occured to me that I should have used bilateral stationary feet & not with one foot half riased. Not sure how to get around that without making a huige hash-up of it... :(

Still got to work on my GS skills, but hey, they don't come over night :) . Have taken inspiration from both Doghouse & Pig of Sparta in their TS mini's. Doghouse's true scale how to guide was a great help. Have to admit, it is not as daunting as I first thought.

I also struggled with using big bits of GS & have wasted a fair amout of it as I was not happy with the overall outcome but... I found a technique that suits me.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01468.jpg

I just used really small snot sized balls of GS & worked it up slowly ;) . This was also easier to manage & I didn't need to go hacking things up if they didn't look right. As well as investing in clay shapers a few years ago - I have also aquired some awesome metal shapers off of eBay for about £9 (inc postage). There are many different shapes & designs that will help me to get better the more I do this, just need to invest in some more GS (provideing my wife allows me too ;) ). Well thats one afternoon & part of an evenings work. More tomorrow :D .

I would honestly suggest the easier method of true scale that I found online here I believe, using an entirely standard space marine and plastic card sheet. a lot less Green stuff and more forgiving with the making things flush and perfectly smooth.

Although each to their own, I hope you are going to file/cut that bad boy down so the green stuff is clean :( I am noticing your greenstuff still isnt quite mixed in places, and actually would advise using grey stuff instead as it dries into a more workable form, also clay shapers are the way forward for this scale of work!

anyway looking forward to seeing how you turn these guys out, all the other true scalers out there inspired me and glad to see others feel the same!

Khargan: Thanks a lot for the advice – I went to an art shop today & purchased some Milliput though I could only get the Yellow-Grey one as that was all they had. I have to admit, I found it was quite nice to work with & actually easier than using GS! Only snag was that I had to use a lot more Vaseline when spreading it around as it tore quite easy if not. I also learned a valuable tip from a YouTube tutorial on using GS – cut away the middle part of GS where the yellow & blue meet & this will stop the ‘clumping’.

Doghouse: Thanks mate, I actually found that using your technique of cutting away the hip plates was good advice as it certainly made life easier when plying the putty around the thighs. The main problem I am having is making sure that everything is symmetrical but that will come with practice.

Ok so not too much work done so far today – mainly been following Khargan’s advice & using Milliput. So far all I have done is to replace my GS with Milliput which is quite nice to work with (& a lot cheaper than GS).

I found that by cutting away the leg's support struts as well as the hip plates really helped me when plying the putty which is a shame really cause I quite like the hip plates as they are quite cool for using to mag-lock weapons to but once I get better at using putty then I will keep them.

So far all I have done is to replace my older models GS with Milliput.

These are the tools that I picked up off of eBay for about £9 - as you can see they come in all sorts of shapes which ar really great for shaping & molding the putty.

Brother Chaplain Kage: Cheers mate, I already got some  – problem is I can’t remember where I put them :D ! I just happened to see these badboys on eBay & thought they would be quite nifty for adding detail & the like once I have gotten used to sculpting.

Ok this evening has been much more productive. I never originally intended to do my Phoenix Guard as TS – just sorta experimented really with sculpting. Have done 8 out of the 10 Astartes so far for my first squad. Have decided very quickly that it is easier that I paint the main bodies first then add the arms later as I painted up two guys & very quickly realised how difficult it would be to paint them up afterwards!

I really like the Sevrin Loth retinue from FW & used their chest plates for my veterans as they have this really cool Phoenix look that I am after to them. I also used one of the legs from the FW conversion kits.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01593.jpg

For the Captain I have used the Emperor's champion body from the command sprue & the metal sword from one of Calgars bodyguards.

These guys have been given two undercoats in Chaos Black & one coat of watered down Necron Abyss.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01597.jpg

I have added some ammo pouches to one of the guys & will also add some others to the rest of the sqaud as I want to give them that urban combat look to them. I have got a number of the assault marine torsos which will be really good to use to attach ammo & pouches too as it will give the feel that they are wearing webbing. I quite like the 'kitted up' look to my Astartes B) . Well that is it for one night, gotta have an early night as I start my new job tomorrow & I gotta have left the flat by 06:40am to get there before 9am ;)

Howdy folks!

Ok so been quite a while since I last posted, in fact a lot longer. I have been doing lots of little bits here & there, just not around to posting them. Am currently in the process of looking for a bigger place to rent as a studio flat is just not big enough for all the stuff I have & projects I want to build.

Moving on swiftly, I have been at work on some weapons for my Phoenix Guard. I was watching Predator the other night & watching Blaine unleash Ol’ Painless, gave me an idea for a heavy weapons specialist :) !! Also toyed with various variants that I have seen posted over the years on the forum. Forgive me; I do forget who originally put up these ideas so I cannot credit them but anyways, not my original idea.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01682.jpg

The Centurion (Emperors Champion) is coming along nicely, I have also undercoated 10 of my Astartes & given them 2 coats of blue. I will probably give them one more going over before I start adding washes & highlights.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01675.jpg

The way I am working is different to before. With my current project I am not building the entire mini’s then painting them as I could never get the detail or layers into the nooks & crannies. I am painting each individual part before carefully gluing them together to the main body.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01673.jpg

Hopefyully I can get some more up later tonight but gotta get the cooking done before wifey comes home.

For the assault cannon Devastators, I made a squad of these for my Ultramarines. It looks way over the top, but hey - they are Space Marines:)

Not the most complicated conversion in the world, but there are a few steps that can easily ruin it when you cut up the heavybolter. Also, posing easily ruins the model.. Think there are a few things I would do differently if I were to make more of them.

Cheers mate, yeah I figured out very early on that they might be a tad problematic positioning wise, still woking on that one. This would purely be a one off model, couldn't imagine making a whole Dev squad of them :P .

Ok this was all I managed to get done last night, not much but I have began to get some Miliput sculpted on to them to bulk them out. These are going to be the basis for the Phoenix Guard's archenemy, the Deciples of Skorpios.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01679.jpg

Just 1mm plasticard spacers. Will endevour to get some more done tonight & hopefully some picts up either later tonight or definately tomorrow.

Ok I am really starting to keep the momentum going now ;) . Got some little bits done last night. Got the Miliput on the legs of my Chaos dude from the Deciples of Skorpios as well as using up the rest of the Miliput on making up a Admech dude. Shame to let all the extra putty go to waste. Quite impressed since working with Miliput, not as easy to smooth I find compared to GS but hardens like a rock & is easily sanded down. My only problem is that I am just starting to loosen my fear of trying sculpting so obviously I am less than amateur at the mo. Tried to make a hood for the Admech guy but as the GS is so thin & flimsy I found it difficult to smooth out my finger marks from it. Will spend this weekend going over some online tutorials on sculpting.

Deciple of Skorpios

Despite putting a generous amount of vaseline on the putty, the clay shapers seem to 'tear' the Miliput :cuss so I used the metal shapers & they seemed to work much better.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01686.jpg

Admech dude

Aiming for a kyphotic look with this dude. I want him to be kinda tall & lithe yet quite imposing. Got some ideas in my head about how I want this guy to look. Used a respirator head from the Ork Commando set. Started out straigtening a brass paper clip & moulded the left over Miliput around it. Drilled a small hole into the bottom of the head then superglued it to the paper clip. Then just flattend out a small piece of GS & wrapped it over the head - then my confidence sapped as I began to make a real hash of it...

Phoenix Guard battle-brother

The Phoenix Guard will be all kitted up for urban warfare & guerilla hit & run. Quite like the idea of having these guys being heavilly kitted out with stuff mag-locked to their battle harness or PA.

Paint work will start on the weekend but tonight & tomorrow will be used continuing on the Admech dude for now.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well it’s been a few weeks since my last post & I am ashamed to say that not too much has happened since my last outing. Since then I have manage to get a chest infection & also complete the entire Battlestar Galactica box set  :D  (can't believe Galactica's journey has finally come to an end in my life) !!!!!!!! So not only have I accomplished that, I have also saved very hard & purchased myself a nice shiny Thunderbolt from Forgeworld which came in the post recently  !!! So now I have started to collect lots of plasticard in various forms for another project that will dwarf the current one ;) .

What I have done with these 4 models is to give them their 4th & final layer of base paint. Next will be the main iconography – knee pads, pauldrons & banners. Once that is done it will be the finer details like oaths of moment, chains, cables & the like. Lastly will be bolters, power packs & bases.

I have not yet entirely considered how I will do my pauldrons yet. The Chapter icon will be a Phoenix rising out of the flames but as for the pads… currently in my mind, I picture them as black or their current dark blue state with white trim. The tricky part will be the trim as I envisage them as being white with gold or silver on the raised edges of both the upper & lower edges of the trim. Gonna need lots of patience & a very steady hand.

Dude no.1 - this guy is casuing me all sorts of trouble. I have painted his ammo pouches 5 times & still I can't get the colour I am after. Also, after being quite proud of making a bulpup bolter, I am having some slight teething problems trying to get it to sit right in his right arm <_< .

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01717.jpg

Dude no.2 - my Champion & centrepiece. Dang he has gotta stand out by the end of this...

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01716.jpg

Dude no.3 - this is my Gaius Baltar (the guy you love to hate), as I glued the body on first it has made life somehwat difficult in painting the bionic leg. Will have to rethink future assembly now.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01715.jpg

Dude no.4 - this will more than likely be the first guy to be completed.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01718.jpg

I hope by the end of this week to have at least completed a squad though in truth it will be nothing short of a miracle if I can complete one guy.... Come in Dude no.4

PS - have no idea why 3 of the 4 picts are on their sides, on my Photobucket account they are all the correct way up. After several attempts to correct this, they still come out on the B&C as lop sided????? Any hints?

Okay got a little bit more done this afternoon. Have base layered the next things to be painted in Fortress Grey. 2/3rds of my paints have not been used for a couple of years so are a bit naff. I have had to add several drops of water to them to make them 'smoother'.

As you can see from Dude no. 4, My two weak points are the right knee pad & his helm's lenses. I have never ever been good a painting the lenses, partly due to a shaky hand but also probably because as I am not a fond painter so I don't practice very much. The knee pad was also quite difficult but you can see what I am aiming for. I suppose this log will keep me painting then as time goes by my painting skills will improve becuase right now, they are naff! My free hand is shocking but mostly when I try to concentrate hence the wobblyness of the painting :P. As this is only a base layer, any mistakes & untidyness can be easily painted over. I want to get this guy done by the weekend as I am trying to keep motivated with this log. I love the construction & coverting of GW mini's, just not a fan of painting. In all honesty if I could afford the extra cash, I would PM some of the boards members who offer their painting services.

Anyway, enough chit chat, here is 45 mins of painting (yes serioulsy, this took me from 16:40pm until 17:25pm today :) ) this afternoon.

Dude no.4

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01722.jpg

Even the base layers still need neatening up but this will be done later tonight. For ease of painting, I will in future paint parts individually I think before pieceing the model together.

Ok done some more work tonight. Since I have uploaded the picts to the B&C they have given me great indication on where needs work doing since my eye sight is not the best. Defo otta get the lenses on the helm sorted out (for a start I gotta fill them both in properly!).

On Dude no.4 I have since added 3 layers of Skull White to the right knee pad as the right shoulder pauldron. As stated earlier, my freehand is pretty awful which is seen on the picts of the pauldrons rims where I tried to finely highlight the edges of the rim with Brazen Brass as the Burnished Gold was all lumpy & nasty.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01749.jpg

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01727-1.jpg

With Dude no.3 AKA Gaius Baltar, I have added Boltgun Metal & then Brazen Brass to the bionics as well as some of the cabeling & kilt. All in all, maybe not an hours work but probably not far off. I have also touched up on the cables at the boots & elbow pads on Dude no.4.

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01733.jpg

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc442/Dorns_padawan/DSC01746.jpg

Next on the list is neatening up all the little nasties as well as those dang lenses. Once that is done I will begin work on the power pack & the bolter. Also to be done is to build up more layers on Dude no.3's bionics.

The Ol' painless that I have been building I hav decided will look better on the true scale version Phoenic Guard I am in the process of finishing off.

So far I have got 16 dudes together that are all now undercoated & in the process of being layered up in their blues. Also to now put together will be my Chaos dude, a Deciple of Skorpios, who will also be true scale.

Verhicle wise, I now have all the components for my Storm Raven which will be extended several inches at least not just length ways but also hight & width wise. This is gonna be one big mutha!
