Rune Priest Ridcully
Basically, a 1000pts list one of my opponents has brutally wiped out my Iyanden and Thouasand sons out several times, as well as any other list sent against it, even by experienced players. The user of said list has been gloating about it. I also recently finished reading the Iliad, the heroics described in it (whilst slightly repetitive) are inspiring, sadly chaos sorcerers and Farseers can't really do that. Then in london I went into this shop and saw reaper mini's "winter wolves" I bought a couple. I am now dusting off my wolves, for the first time in over a year and a half, I shall use them. I have started converitng my wolf Lord again (this will be his 4th incarnation) and planning to show the "Invincible and undefeated" list why my wolves were feared in my gaming group (epecially my wolf gaurd with assault cannon, who would kill at least one model/cause serious damage to a tank every time he fired, and my wolf guard Ajax, who on his own survived 2 turns of fire dragon fire by himself.) The "invincible and undefeated list" is as follows: Cassius and 9 tacticals in rhino. 3 10 man tactical squads, no upgrades. A thunderfire cannon (how I hate that thing) A squad 5 devestators with 2 lascannons, a plasma cannon and a missile launcher. The main problem is that the guy is so lucky on his thinder fire cannon (seriously, wiping out whole squads of rubrics and half a squad of wraithgaurd :( ) The list I am planning on using to avenge my previous defeat (even if it was with xenos and sorcerers) is thus: Wolf Lord Velindor "sheildwall" Stormwolf with wolf tooth necklace, Stormsheild 2 Fenrisian wolves and Menelaus (Frost Spear, said to have been a custodian blade shattered upon Prospero, then reforged by the Iron priest Beulf the Black and named after it's original bearer.) 185pts Dreadnought Cohen with extra armour and heavy flamer 130pts 10 Grey hunters, 1 with power weapon, 2 with plasma gun 180pts 10 Grey hunters, 1 with Power weapon, 2 with melta guns 175pts Land Speeder with heavy bolter and heavy flamer 60pts 5 Long Fangs, 2 with missile launchers, 2 with Plasma cannons 135pts 5 Long Fangs, 2 with Lascannons, 2 with Heavy bolters 135pts total: 1000pts The plan is for Velindor to join the melta hunter pack, and then for both of the grey hunter packs and Cohen to advance as fast as possible into the enemy, whilst using run and cover to minimise loss's whilst the speeder and the long fangs provide covering fire, hopefully knocking out the thunderfire cannon and devestator squad. What do you think? will it be a fitting return to action for my wolves? Also, what do you find brings you back to the wolves? are my above reasons common? also them being my first army may have been a thing as well  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/235908-dusting-off-my-wolves/ Share on other sites
dswanick
Short of wanting a small squad of Wolf Scouts to BEL his Thunderfire, some Rhinos for the GH packs and a Razorback for the LFs, I would swap the Long Fang weapons around and run the LCs with the MLs firing from the rear with the HBs and PCs together in a more forward support position. Keep the 48" and the 36" weapons together. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/235908-dusting-off-my-wolves/#findComment-2841709 Share on other sites
Grimtooth
Mix your lascannons with your missile launchers and your plasma cannons with your heavy bolters. Match ranges and purposes, rather then losing Fire Control as your first casualty and then having 2 weapons a turn possibly not doing crap. Rune Priest Ridcully
The heavy bolters are kinda there to provide a shield for the lascannons, I mix the weapons as it means I can make the most out of the pack leaders control of fire, but I see the wisdom in the keeping the ranges together.. The problem is on transport I only have one rhino and a ravorback, my list has not really changed since late 3rd when I started, and I believe that at most a rhino could only provide one turns of protection, of course that could be the turn that allows me to destroy the thunderfire, but then again he could then focus it on the long fangs. With scouts, I don't like th models, and my attempts to convert some have not worked, if FW ever do a thunder armour kit, then I would use that as a base to convert them from. Also what has brought other people back to the wolves? MaveriK
Also what has brought other people back to the wolves? I never left, nor will i ever leave. People who have and play SW armies don't quit Space Wolves, they just go on vacation. Once a wolf, ALWAYS a wolf. mcpolle
very true, am just getting back into 40k after a long break, did not even take me 2 secs to work out which army i would be playing, bought the codex, and starter pack straight away:-9 Polle Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/235908-dusting-off-my-wolves/#findComment-2842247 Share on other sites
Rune Priest Ridcully
I guess so, whilst I had been taking a break from playing wolves, I hadn't stopped converting wolf Guard (must have about 20 converted ones in power armour, and then about 16 of the metel terminators) and doing touch ups on my land speeders (yes the desk I use for moddeling is pretty much covered in bits and conversions). Would it perhaps be an idea to drop one of the long fang packs and the land speeder abd take a 5 man wolf guard pack (2 with the grey hunters, the rest as 3 man terminator squad) and then put the lord with it? skoll
do what ya want cuz a wolf man is free. You are a wolf man. Also how ya gonna turn the white blade red with the blood of the coward if ya cant close the distance?? Honestly I love missile long fangs, and dont see a reason to not take only missiles, you have him beat in the long range aisle problem is he has ya beat on sheer number of bodies (not that a vanilla marine shall ever equal a man from the greatest chapter). Now you can play to your advantage, sit back and pepper him with fire (prioritizing his Dev squad and TF cannon) or ya can drop that land speeder and get some rhinos to take those grey hunters where they need to be. Rune Priest Ridcully
I just got 5 of the metel grey hunters off ebay (don't ask why, I just prefer metel, especially those old grey hunters) and was thinking of giving one a power fist, does anyone use poerfists on grey hunters or just give them to the acompanying wolf guard? I usually give power weapons to the grey hunters because of the number of attacks, but I am thinking of trying it out, especially in lower pts games where I can't afford wolf Guard. I do, occasionally, bury a PF in my GH packs. Although I prefer the WGs higher base A for that. 2. How can you not afford WGPLs? They're 3pts more for the model with loads more options... Rune Priest Ridcully
It's 1000pts, I could drop one of the long fang packs to get some wolf guard, but which one? I like both, perhaps the lascannon and heavy bolter one? Wysten
Depends, The dreadnort would probably be the best drop, but you seem fond of it so I am not entirely sure what else. That being said, I don't think you will have huge problems with tacticals, a lack of special weapons means they don't really have punch in anything aside from attrition of bolter rounds. You could hose down the Devs and sit in Rhinos, or march the dread in and drive around them with glee and impurity. Your Dread, Speeders and Long Fangs will easily make up for him outnumbering your troops choices. Either way, use your quaility to dust up the tact squads and use the Hunters to drag down one squad at a time. Rune Priest Ridcully
That's the plan, at range, I have more then enougth punch, dice permiting, to knock out his devestators and Thunderfirecannon whilst the dread and grey hunters charge forward, with his long range support simply being inundated with targets, and once his heavy support is destroyed, then the long fangs can gleefully rain death upon the tacticals, opening the tin can cassisus hides in (would it be worth dropping a power weapon of one of the hunter packs and give my lord saga of the beast slayer to deal with him? or just have the Cohen visit him?) or should I just stop using them then so that the close combat fight odds are not so badly stacked against him :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/235908-dusting-off-my-wolves/#findComment-2844092 Share on other sites
