Walter Payton
I am thinking of doing a Roman themed Space Marine chapter, but can't think of a name. I've come up with a few words, although any other suggestions would be very welcome: Animals: Eagles Types of People: Tetrarchs Praetors Praetorians Liberators Liberatores (the name that Caesar's assassins gave themselves) Tribunes Legates Triumphators Legionaries Centurions Legion Cohorts Gladiators Consuls Lictors Random Roman-related words: Aelian/ii Aurelian/ii Augusta Gladius/ii Felix Scutum Horatii Any and all suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks, Alecto Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/235975-roman-chapter/ Share on other sites
Commander S. Caesare
Imperial Signiferi! Named after the heralds/flag bearers of Caesar's armies! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/235975-roman-chapter/#findComment-2842623 Share on other sites
Bava
Hm... Hastati Principes Triarii These are the names of legion units before Gaius Marius' reform took place. Hastati were lightly amored and rather unexperienced, Principes constituted the main fighting force and Triarii were the most seasoned veterans and could afford the best equipement. Other random latin names equites - knights malleus - hammer dracones - snakes/dragons monachus - monk ignis - fire sagitta - arrow securis - axe What about Legio Irae (Legion of Wrath)? Elric the Silvercoat
Remember that the Ultramarines are Roman so you can get some ideas from that. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/235975-roman-chapter/#findComment-2842633 Share on other sites
Walter Payton
Remember that the Ultramarines are Roman so you can get some ideas from that. The Ultramarines are generally based on the early Principate. I was thinking of looking more at the later (post Crisis of the Third Century) Empire or the early republic. I would use Liberators Gladius which comes out something like Freers by the Sword. I think that is what it means my Latin is weak. Freers by the Sword would be Liberatores Gladio, because it takes the plural of Liberator (group 3 and the ablatice of Gladius (group 2 masculine). But that is a good idea, so is the Signiferi one from CSC. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/235975-roman-chapter/#findComment-2842682 Share on other sites

Walter Payton
Right lads, I am going to go with the Liberatores Gladio for the name of the chapter. However, the chapters elite shall be called the Equites Signiferi, the Standard-Bearing Knights. Thank you from Elric Silvercoat and Commander S Caesare. The possible names I had were dreadful as compared to these. Cheers! :D ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/235975-roman-chapter/#findComment-2842700 Share on other sites

Captain Leo Mariusz
Even though you chose your name already I was wondering why animal-wise you only chose the Eagle. I'd think that the wolf was more important having raised Romulus and Remus. But that's just me nitpicking! Great name by the way! I also have a Latin named chapter, the Brothers Sempiternus.
