Crimson Fist Test Model

This is my first Space Marine. I went with the Crimson Fists for love of the scheme and the fluff. I am fairly pleased with how it turned out. The varnish didn't go on quite as smooth as I would have liked, but it still wasn't the kind of disaster I recently experienced with purity seal. Comments and criticisms welcome. I am distinctly aware of that bit of brown on the foot. Let me know what you think and if you would like to see more as I progress through the models. I have the remainder of the contents of AoBR, another captain, and a librarian. Enjoy!

Nicely done, especially for your first marine.

If anything I would dull down the bolter metallics with a badab black wash but it may make the mini as a whole look too dull.

Also a trick I learnt from my Crimson Fists. If you are using the chapter decals they are a complete pain to get a non wrinkly finish due to the roundness of the shoulder and a circle decal. To fix this paint on coats of gloss varnish (vajello works wonders) to hide the decal carrier film and make the bonding surface super smooth. Once the decal is on the now glossed shoulder get a scalpel and make 4 small incisions on the edge of the decal in the 12, 3, 6 and 9 oclock positions. Position the decal where you want it to sit and pat it down with some paper towell or tissues. Then take some Microsol or Mr Softer decal softners and put a decent amount on and leave it sit overnight. The decal softner will make the decal go all wrinkly but trust me it will settle down perfect over time. Put another coat of gloss over the decal to seal it in then matt coat your mini and you have a seamless flat decal ^_^

Did the roughness of the paint come from the undercoat or clear coat?

Thanks for the tip on the decal, it was a pain in the ass to get on there. I had even thought about making relief cuts, but didn't for some reason. The decal solutions I used are Vallejo Decal Medium and Decal Fix. Pretty sure the roughness of the finish is from the varnish. I guess I didn't shake it quite enough before I sprayed the marine, because the AoBR Ork Nob I sprayed right before it turned out great. I'm really looking forward to painting up some more fists. Not sure how I will want to do the blue on the librarian though.

Great first mini, as said before you'll get better with time, some little tips to help you put, if I may:

The bolter lens, build up the reds a little more.

The gun metal areas...put two thin coats on chasmal on with a nice wash of Badab black and then either leave it at that or go back over it gently with chainmail.

Drill the boltgun/weapon barrels out.

And the red on the model, make it a little bit more brighter with a deeper look.

Hope these helps.
