Wulfebane
So I keep getting mixed rulings at my local store regarding Lone Wolves and Fenrisian wolves, for which I cannot find a definitive answer in any rule book. Do fen. wolves gain the armor save of the Lone Wolf (most particularly in TDA), considering they're wargear or retinue, etc, or do they only get their 6+ as normal beasts? I've been told both situations are accurate in three different games, so I'd really like to settle the debate. Grimtooth
There is zero rules backing for Fenrisian wolves to get the Lone Wolves save. They don't follow rules for a retinue, they follow the rules for Fenrisian wolves in the codex. The only time I think I have heard anything like that is for shield drones in a Tau army. Wulfebane
Yeah, the player I went up against who said they get the LW's save was a Tau player. hendrik
they are bought as wargear but besides that they follow all the rules for fenrisian wolves. Vojnik
don't mean to of throw the thread a bit. but do the fen wolves counting as wargear take up a space in a transport? i've been told they don't but in the codex it says fen wolves take up 2 spots. but as wargear does this not apply? dswanick
Codex: Space Wolves, Pg.31 : "Loyal Companions" special rule answers that question. MalachiOfRuss
Fen. wolves with a Lone Wolf form a squad - it's the only time that a Lone Wolf can be part of a "squad." For all intents and purposes, they follow the all the rules that any other squad would follow, they just happen to have different armor saves so you allocate the wounds accordingly. Wouldn't matter if they were a retinue; individual models always use their own saves. My Tau codex is boxed up somewhere, so I can't check the rules for drones, but I know of no instance where a model doesn't use it's own save. In five editions of the rules this is one point that has remained consistent. Same shield drone on a crisis suite gets a 3+/4++ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/236008-fenrisian-wolves-and-vague-rulings/#findComment-2843812 Share on other sites
Silverwolf
Yeh, shield drones are in a separate distinction all their own. Basically they take on whatever attributes in regards to saves and toughness of the unit they attach to. As a Tau player, you can quite literally pay for extra wounds. Fenrisian wolves are in no way a shield drone. Your Tau opponent simply fails to understand that his rules only apply to him :). For however for 8pts, I'd say I'd prefer Fenrisian Wolves to Shield Drones. They might not have as a good a save, but those couple extra attacks can make a real difference at times. Valerian
Thanks BR for the reference. So it seems that even Shield Drones take their own Save, they are just special in that the save is not set, but is based on the unit type that those drones are bought for.
