Skolia
Just...wow. As ever, your painting is awesome. The power weapons look stunning, and that armour...damn. That is a very, very nice shade of red there. Souitenesse
Those are the best painted honor guard I had the luck of witnessing. Please, O Winterdyne, I beg for a close-up of that Hero power sword, I need to learn how you did it! Would you kindly share your recipe for that gold of yours? It is breathtaking. winterdyne
The Chapter Master's sword is covered in his own thread - in short a dark red, blended through red up to a yellow / white mix. The gold for the most part is very simple - scorched brown basecoat, block in with VMC bronze, devlan wash, highlight with VMC old gold then VMC old gold / VMA silver mix. Pin washes of devlan again, just under the 'layers', maybe a glaze of sepia if it looks like it needs it. winterdyne
The red: Black undercoat. Zenithal highlight pass (airbrush) from VMC gunmetal grey up to VMA silver. 2 or 3 coats VMC Clear red. It'll look quite pink at this stage. Asurmen Blue wash, quite heavy in the recesses, blend out. It'll look purplish. Baal Red glazes to knock it back toward red. Edge highlights with a mix of blood red / VMA silver. If necessary glaze back with VMC Burnt Cadmium Red. Chips with VMC B.C. Red / Black mix, highlighted with Blood Red / VMA silver mix. Flat coat the whole model (once everything else is painted). Finally go back and gloss the armour and (if you want 'em shiny) the metals. Use a good gloss varnish - I used VMC Gloss Varnish, but 'ard coat would also do. winterdyne
Thanks. To be honest, it's probably possible to do the same effect with the spraygun for the clear red stages, using just a drybrushed metallic undercoat. It really does get filtered a hell of a lot by the clear coats. The gloss is done by hand after the whole minis were flat coated.
