A 2500pt Space Wolves Tournament Army

Hello all,

I posted this over in the Space Wolves sub-forum as well, but I thought I'd share it with the wider community too. As I said there, this is quite a big deal for me, as I've never managed to fully paint up a gaming army before (I fall prey to new model syndrome, terrain building, etc.) so I challenged myself to stick with it and get the job done!

I know the painting style may not be to everyone's tastes, but FYI I'm a big fan of the grimy, heavy wash look, with extreme highlights in almost a graphic novel style of paintwork.

Shot this video in my local London GW - I hope you like it all. A selection of pics follow video, but the video will give you a better idea of it live in the 'flesh':

Wow those are some fantastic looking Space Wolves you got there brother. May I ask your recipe for blue?

Sure thing! It's actually deceptively simple:

1) Over the box plastic/resin, prime the entire model with The Army Painter's Wolf Grey Primer (no need for black undercoat). This will leave a rather bright grey-blue which you then 'work down' in terms of shading...

2)...by coating the model with The Army Painter's Dark Tone Quickshade (allowing to dry for 24 hours).

3) Once COMPLETELY dry, coat the model with a fine layer of anti-shine Matt Varnish (once again, I use TAP's line).

4) Following that, the model is almost done, but I apply heavy washes of Asurmen Blue and Badab Black to blend in the armour plates, before highlighting with a rather extreme layer of GW's Space Wolves Grey.

Good to see that the Army painter products work so well for Space Wolves! What colour did you use to fix paint mistakes on the armour? I haven't quite found the right shade of grey yet to match the primer colour...

Thanks for all comments thus far. The army is indeed great fun to play regardless of win/loss/draw record.

To fix mistakes, I brewed a batch of 'trial-and-error' paint consisting of a mix of Shadow Grey, Fortress Grey, Adeptus Battlegrey and Asurmen Blue wash. I'm afraid I can't tell you the ratios as I just worked at it until I found the right combination...!!

Thank you for all encouraging comments thus far!

great looking army you got there! I think the really bright highlight works well. What colors did you use for the faces, the yellows and the red prior to the dip?

Since I am a fan of heavy washes, coupled with the fact that the Dark Tone Quickshade dip does dramatically darken any shade, you will want to paint on overly-bright colours that, prior to dipping, actually look terribly garish. I used:

1) Mechrite Red with a highlight of Blood Red and a lowlight of Scab Red for the reds.

2) Space Wolves Grey, (post-wash and post-dip) for extreme highlights.

3) Dheneb Stone with highlight of Skull White for bone/fur/cloth.

4) Graveyard Earth with highlight of Dheneb Stone for darker cloth/fur/bone areas.

5) The faces are done with a full coat of Tallarn Flesh, followed by a 80% coat of Elf Flesh. That's it. Then dip.

Meanwhile, I found it out: 1:1:3 of Wolf Grey:Andrea Blue:Sombre Grey from Vallejo ;) I was missing the blue part :P

Nice! Thanks for the tip - that'll make my trial and error method far easier.

Slightly off-topic, I'm in love with Vallejo model/game colour paints.
