Hi Folks

I was requested to put up a tutorial on how I made these for the eldest lad.

As you can tell it was inspired by the Forge World landspeeder Tempest which the lad couldn't afford and anyway I thought the 3 engined Storm made a better starting point and would allow more space to pile the weopens on. Also it would give him lots of Scout Marine spares to mate up with new legs from Bits and Kits.

I don't have a tutorial as such but heres some pics from during construction. Had I been less rusty I would have tried for a proper cockpit like on a Tempest rather than a simple sarcophagus but they still look OK I reckon. I'll do additional weathering after the unit markings go on.

OK They were pretty much bodged togehter and some of the plasticard was 20+ years old and very brittle and a lot of filler and sanding was required but I hope you'll cut me some slack!

 You hope we'll cut you some slack? Those are incredible, absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

They are beautiful models. I especially love the guy popping out of the top hatch with the storm bolter, kind of reminiscent of a WW1 era two seater bi-plane. A great idea and very well executed.

Thanks for the kind words! You should have seen what I was doing when I last modelled about 15 years ago when I was laid up with a badly broken leg for 6 month, vac form and resin 1:72 First World War aircraft, so well spotted I was thinking of those late war armoured ground attack planes the Germans had. I even threatened to paint them in lozenge pattern cammo but it would have taken forever!

Most of them were wrecked when we moved house but the odd one survived

I've got a couple of straight Landspeeders to do with him and am thinking of fitting Scarf type rings to the gunners seat, just to make them a bit diffrent and cover the 270 degrees the modelled mount doesn't

PS what would I need to do for a proper tutorial?

For a tutorial you would need step by step instructions for each stage of the construction process, accompanied by pics of the model at each stage.

Also a list of parts and the dimensions you use to cut the plasticard, perhaps even a template that people could print out.

Awesome models though, looks more heavily armed than a Storm Raven

I'll see what photos I took while making them and if any of the drawings survived, the wing dimensions are scribbled on the lid of the box I keep drills in (not having the traditional fag packet to hand ;-{D) To be honest most of it was done by eye.

Compared with the loads some modern gunships carry I thought I was being restrained! Not being a gamer myself I fudged it. The lad needs to use them in a few games to see how they play.

Just wondering if you have a downloadable pattern that we can use for cutting out your styrene parts? That is if you don't mind sharing your awesomeness with the rest of us. I would love to build one but am a little shy on cutting out and building stuff whith sheet styrene.

Thanks,

Thanks for the kind words folks! Sorry I haven't been to this site for a while but as I've started on the last 5 rhinos for the lads reinforced company after putting them by for months I thought I'd see what's happening.

Looking at the Storm Talon and the whole summer of fliers thing I can see that a lot of folks will be making Tempest or similar conversions to use.

I'm afraid I didn't keep the measurements of the parts when made them but it was fairly easy to bodge together. I did it the stupid way of measuring and cutting a part, glueing it in and then making the next section fit rather than making a thin card version and then cutting and scribing a single piece of plasticard so it bent where the card was creased. That would have been much quicker and stronger.

I really wish some one who knows how would make a vac form part to slap on the top of a Storm to turn it into a ground attack craft like these as with the three engines and longer body it looks the part.

My main regret is the pilots armoured coffin thingy is too wedge shaped to allow for the second pair of heavy bolters or missile tubes. A more complex shape, sloping at the sides would have made it look more aerodynamic.

Anyroad I really hope some of you make improved versions of this one and post your pics

Ps got two more straight lanspeeders to do after the rhinos, started them but got side tracked. I was doing this anyway but in the light of all this dogfighting malarkey I glad i am fitting them with circular gun rings at roof level so they can shoot 360 degrees and will fit something suitable for anti aircraft to them. I've cut out the moulded in legs of the gunner and rebuilt the seats and replaced the back rest with a fold down seat so the gunner can sit high or low facing forward or can face backwards standing up with the upper seat folded down.

Aw, thanks, a bit of praise makes it easier to buckle down and do them. The eldest two are off at scout camp for a week so the youngest has policed up a mound of unmade Necrons and we are going to see how many we can do together while he has my undevided attention.

yesterday i finished the last 5 Rhinos for the eldest

Well finished except I now have to do the decals, weather with some powders and matt varnish all 16 of his Rhinos and rhino deriviitives

The 2 land speeders can wait as can the Tech marine exo skeleton thing i'm knocking up from a old space crusade dreadnought

It needs a roll cage, detailing etc. I also need to make a few more Tech marines but with some cyborg limbs as the folk who said they were too plain were quite right.

Better crash, its gone three and I'm too old for all nighters!
