What made you play Dark Angels

Plague Knight

Recommended Posts

I didn't think the red boltgun casings looked...dark enough (not to mention that red+green=christmas), so mine are black...black boltguns over DA green armor (with a black wash) is...awesomely grimdark.

I tried to paint them red for a while, before I realized that the tactical marine in the middle of the 3rd Ed codex had a black one.

WIthin the hour, all my marines had black bolters. :)

But this is 40k and we're the good guys, emperor have mercy on our foes for we shall not.

Good guys!?!?!?!?There are no good guys nowdays!Only the tau think so and thats why theyll get a good spanking!

As for the bolters i paint mine fortress grey and throw a bhadab black wash.Looks like the bolters our troops have on the codex cover.

I started back in 3rd edition. Regular marines were soso. I saw the cover of the dark angels mini-dex, and I thought it looked pretty damn cool. Dark Armor, golden plasma pistol wielding chaplain. I was of course severely disappointed in the mini dex in later years, but it seemed like a good idea to me at the time. I never understood why they let some second edition dark angels armies get featured in the mini dex though. It was obvious that one guy had at least 50% of his points in HQ, and more than 2 HQ choices. At least we were never forced to see their ugly mugs again, unless you open the codex today. :D

Anyhoo.. yeah, it was the armor that drew me to the army, and the successor chapter armor was pretty cool too. All the story is just cherry on top.

Sadly, that used to be the case in the good days of Third Edition. The true days of 40K.

Now, everybody has to be a hero. Look at the Blood Angels, changed from Vampires to glorious heros. Look at the Ultramarines. The Imperial Cult (used to be far more crazy and grimdark). The big 'E' himself. The Grey Knights...

It's far more hero-ish now. I liked the days when the Emperor was a half-dead corpse, being worshipped for no real reason, thousands dying every day for a man who cared nothing. Millions of Guardsmen died in a hundred battlefields. The faintist sign of Heresy burnt to a crisp, even if it was not worth it. The very Imperium itself was dying, a dead, careless organization caring nothing for its slaves, with a thousand enemies feasting on its remains.

Yes, the true days. When fluff was grim and dark rather than just a few words to that effect being chucked out before going to tales of awesome shooty killy heros in space.

Well i dont really believe that things have changed too much. The golden throne is damaged beyond repair, the cadian gate is all but lost, the nids are overweming the galaxy from all sides, armageddon got smashed three times...So what if there have been a couple of victories?By all accounts in 6th edition the imperium would be fighting to keep the enemies of man from reaching terra itself!

As an example, look at the Imperium. Before it was a evil, corrupt, organization that cared nothing for its servants. In-fighting was as common as battles against the Aliens. You couldn't even put the words 'Hero' and 'Imperial Guard' in the same sentence. Life was as cheap as dirt.

Before, there was no good guy. The Imperium was just as bad as the Eldar, Orks, perhaps not Chaos. Now they are the good guy.

Nah they think that they are the good guys.Inquisitorial practises are the same. You mispell the word emperor and you get torture/pain/death,in that order. The only things that has changed in the fashion which exterminatus is carried.THey dont use virus bombs any more because it feeds papa nurgle.

Space marines are still the same corrupt baggers they used to be.Same goes for the administratum, high lords and admec.Just because they call the guardsmen heroes doesnt change anything.I might call a serial murderer hero will he be?

And to be honest those poor shods have balls of steel.Take a 15-20 year old man and make him charge a chaos marine with a flashlight and cereal box for weapon and armor respectively, come on i dare ya!And if he survives that he will take an inquisitorial debriefing which results in torture/pain/death in order to save his soul from the corrupting influence of chaos....DUHHHHHH,but i killed a cha....BLAM!

And lets not forget the tenents of the imperium which are in every rulebook which can be sumarised as:You must love torture/pain/death because those who do it for you know better and by it you love the corpse we named a god(hmm... that sounds cha....BLAM!)

So not so much change at all...BLAM!Change is chaos you foul Tzeentch worshiper!

They aint good guys they are just surrounded and ready to die,and that gives them an epic look.

EDIT:When did the imperium cared for its servants? The last time i heard an inquisitor speaking,he burned an entire planet just to be sure he burned 10 suspected heretics. Also Khorne GKs anyone? That was da best!

Eldar are bad?No they are just space hippies!Orks are plain we dont care fur anifing, ooooh shinnny teeef!

Nah they think that they are the good guys.

I meant as to the way Games Workshop portrays them. And they portray them as the good guys.

Tell that to the Ultra Marines and Grey Knights. The Administratum and High Lords are pretty much the stupid old fools only interested in there own power, but they're pretty much the only darkness in the ranks of brightness. The Mechanicum... I'll give you that one. GW has done well there. :)

Guardsmen. The view I got from the 3rd Ed rulebook was that they were a mindless sledgehammer. The commissioners killed for the slightest offense, the men leading were mindless idiots, the actual Men were cowards. Fun times.

Ahhhhh.... But the Guardsmen shouldn't have balls of steel. They should be cowards at worst and dumb at best. But the image of a man charging a Chaos Marine dressed in a cereal packet and 'shooting' with a flashlight made me smile. :)

Hrrnm. But how many times do we see suffering and torture now? There was a short story in the 3rd Ed rulebook, about a scribe who used a pen that pretty much tore her fingers to rags when she wrote. Suffering for no reason. Good.

The Emperor. Before he was a corpse. Hey, was he in fact a corpse, or still somehow barely alive in a deathless state? Either way, he cared nothing for the millions that died every day for him, the blood that was drained and used to keep him alive. But now he's more awesome, keeping back the tides of chaos and stuff.

To be honest, I never understood why they changed the picture of him staring down in competent. I loved that. It just showed the futility of the whole universe. It's rubbish now. :(

EDIT:When did the imperium cared for its servants? The last time i heard an inquisitor speaking,he burned an entire planet just to be sure he burned 10 suspected heretics. Also Khorne GKs anyone? That was da best!

But take the Ultramarines again. Peaceful, loving, hippy Space Marines dancing around helping out Guardsmen and saving the universe every other Thursday.

The planetary governors, many of whom which seem to be actually ruling now rather than being the ugly self-serving bastards they used to be.

It's the feel of it more than anything else which has gone. I used to be able to read 2nd/3rd Ed rulebooks and feel depressed. Not as much with 4th, not at all with 5th.

Necropolis. Storm of Iron. Helreach. All good dark books that show 40k truly. :)

2nd Edition, "Angels of Death" sold Dark Angels to me in 5 minutes(still my favorite codex of the Dark Angels of all time). (though Space Crusade era paved the way for me nicely, I loved the colors of the Deathwing)

First and foremost= Fluff

Secondth= Iconography and the "Feel of the chapter"

That's all there is to it, and never looked back.

I believe that you take the words you read to the letter. Most of what is written in the dexes is from an imperial pov so it had to be heroic.Of caurse the guards are cowards and they still need a comissar to blow their brains off in order to fight. My balls of steel comment was not to be taken litteraly.Just forget what you know about the guard. You are a citizen in a world that has barely survived a tyranid invasion and you learn that private Bob charged a six meter horror with talons two times your body and managed to kill it by blowing himself in the detonation of his own crak grenades.Nobody show Bob crying two hours ago and nobody mentioned that they found two liters of crap on his pants afterwards.Private Bob is declared a war hero since he killed a horror and a statue of him is placed in the town square. What a hero!!!!

The emperor 'ascended' specificaly to combat the powers of chaos, that has been established from forever not just 3rd ed.And ofc he never cared for some insignificant millions of humans in the galaxy,he cares for the big picture whatever that is.And that has been since the days he was alive not like he is now.

In essence most codices have an imperial pov and that means that they are propaganda leaflets.OFC they portrey themselves as the good guys.

P.S.I have to see a good governor since the days of Helena Derosa in DAW2

P.S2.Yeah the Gk are all too good. They even massacred the sisters in order to anoint their weapons and armor and walked into the blood river:

BLOOOOOOOOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OOOOOPSSSS.I Meant FOR THE EMPEEEEROOOOOOORRRRRR.Yeah thats right....Phewwwww!!!
