Venerable Dreadnought

Ashdown

Recommended Posts

Ran out of DullCote so it's a bit glossier than I would like, but that is an easy fix. I also havent decided what I am going to write in the scrolls on the chest, so those are black at the moment. But I hope you enjoy and as always; critiques, comments, and haters are always welcomed.

Must have been one long crusade.. I have always thought the Black templars would keep their gear spotless as possible due to the inate thought that cleanliness was closer to godliness and as such.. closer to the emperors will.. but as far as the figure goes!! WELL DONE!!!

I see alot of vehicles and such that are painted in the weather scheme of things.. but for the life of me.. reading the fluff backgrounds i can;t beleive any imperial chapter of space marines would willingly run around in rusted armors or with rusting weapons.. it would seem to me that they would take care of their gear just like soldiers in our modern military take care of their assisgned weapons.. last thing you want on a battlefield is your weapon to be gummed up.. or emperor forbid.. you lose a track cause" brother dummy".. forgot to remove the metal necron heads in between the tracks during nightfall..

Plus can you imaging a tech priest or a tech marine or a iron priest who was given total crap from some newbie marine and told.. sir its defective.. or my chainsword broke a chain cause i didn;t clean it.. or my bolter blew up in my hand cause i didn;t take the time to clean it??? Yea he won;t make it thru the day!

Still i must admit.. it does look spiffy on the figures.. but i would think it would be more of a CHAOS thing than an imperial thing to let stuff rust or become decrepit due to a lack of effort on the space marines part..

Just my 2 cents!

I love it. I think the weathering is very well done and the glowing eyes reflecting onto the top of the gorget look great.

I agree wulff that they wouldn't go into battle with their gear all beat up/ rusty etc... But if you read Helsreach for example they aren't always going to have time or resources to look "pretty" when in the middle of a campaign. My thinking on the Templars (and the one I modeled my main crusade around ) is that once they make planetfall they will not stop until they have finished kicking the snot out of everyone in their path on the way to come kick the snot out of YOU.

There's a difference between this weathering, and really rusty gear. This is a dreadnought that has fought several days. As you can read in Helsreach the armor of the Templars are 'weathered' after a few days of battle. So even though they do begin a battle in clean armor, they do not repaint it or 'oil' it in between.

Nice looking dread ashdown, I'm really digging your vehicles. The more I see yours, the more I'm wanting to get me a FW decal sheet as well! Keep up the good work!

When can we expect the next one? :P

First off thanks for all the positive comments. I have always striven to paint well and it feels good to see my hard work appreciated.

I'm really liking your nod to the Crimson Fist with your dreadnought close combat weapon. Or at least I'm assuming that it is a nod to the Crimson Fist.

Haha, yep I am glad someone caught it. I am thinking about getting some of the forge world space marines and tying in some Imperial Fist iconography for my Sword Brethren later on.

Yea I felt the same at first. Most of all my original models were crisp and clean straight from Mars, however, as I read the novels I always visioned my deities of war cleansing the unclean on alien planets. The atmospheres on those planets being corrosive and unkind to Emperors chosen's war gear. So through experimentation etc... I decided to strip my models and begin weathering them; giving them a sense of kinetic action and history. A few of them I will keep pristine, I have my techmarine who keeps his armor looking like his Sunday's best, but for the most part I have enjoyed the process of giving them the look of hell. Thanks again for the positive comments and the critiques. I am taking a few weeks off to finish off my army and will be posting new models every couple of days so keep an eye open.

very nice dreadnought. I really like the weathering on the white shoulders, really ties the whole effect together.

I like to think that there is an automated servo arm on the techmarine holding a paint brush doing touch ups to the armor as damage is taken, another with a bottle of windex and another with a cloth to wipe the armor clean as he goes. that actually sounds like a very fun modelling idea...
