SW and Helmets

Ok, so I was talking today about how Space Wolves, with their huge hair styles, could wear helmets. My dad said they probably had hair nets (like cooks), and I had jokingly offered the idea that their hair dues were actually wigs that they took off when they put on their helmets.

How would you explain it, if attempting to explain model practicality?

lol, have you not seen a Jamaican with crazy dreads' wearing a moto helmet? They just shove it on over top, and have dreads' sticking out the bottom...

*Gets GS ideas to start having SW hair poking out the bottom of their helmets...*

Reminds me of my "viking" uncle ;)

Cut down the excessive hair and beards with a modelling knife, or don't use those heads at all. SW may not like helmets, but there's going to be times they need them (gas attack, decompression etc..) and excessive hair and beards would be a fatal mistake. GW have a history of going really extreme with SW hair that is, to my mind, unnecessary. Something akin to the Marauder Horsemen (and similar) from fantasy would have been a far smarter design choice than the foot-and-a-half hair on some of the heads.

I have always given almost all my wolves helmets, even when I first started, part of me thought it was stupid to not wear a helmet, (that and I hate painting skin and eyes) and the recent fluff about wolvesdisliking helmets has madfe my eyes roll. I was disapointed in the new space wolf sprue in thaat respect, whilst we got some nice heletss, the majority of heds were useless due to the sheer stupidity of the hair styles, look at the 2nd ed metal,s only a few were unhelmeted.

I'm pretty sure that it's not a recent thing.

Unless my memory fails me, that goes back at least as far as the Ragnar books...

Its not only tracking, a wolfs smels the state his fellow woles are in, smel the state of an enemy, and hear stuff even a normal marine cant.

But only without a helmet, and a marine moves so fast its hard to target the head and even a head shot doesn't have to be deadly for a marine

In fluff and books there is alot of weapons that don't have the power to damage Power Armour and Space Marine skin. And the thing about Ragnar getting shot and almost dying has to do with him being shot with an Infernal round from a chaos Space Marine, which is powerful enought to damage power armour and kill a Space Marine.

Almost all of my Space Wolves wear helmets. Only the Wolf Scouts and a handful of characters (metal ones, that I didn't feel like modifying), a couple newer Wolf Guard do not. Not wearing your helmet to war just doesn't sit well with me; especially when the Power Armour and integrated helmet feature Auto-Senses . I've gotten a little looser on this over the years, as sometimes it's nice to have some actual faces to look at. However, I don't think any of my basic guys (Grey Hunters, Claws) are helmetless.

from a fluff point of view I always figured that a Space Wolf would grow and style their hair until such time as they had a mission where they needed a helmet. At that point they'd either tie it up somehow or just take a knife from somewhere about their person and just cut it off, s'only hair and it'll grow back. then they'd be even more fired up to kill whatever enemy had caused them to need a haircut.

I think this was reinforced in the Prospero Burns books where Bear just cuts off a chunk of his hair that got a bit burned. One could also take the "it takes a lot of discipline to be this dangerous" ethos to corroborate this idea. Yes we're Space Wolves, yes we have long "barbarian" hairstyles, but when it's time to cut the hair, it's time to cut the hair.

For my models I tend to keep helmets for the troops and a few character models with hair. I like the anonymity of the helmets for "troops".

None of my wolves wear helmets, for the simple reason that we're conditioned to look at faces and un-helmeted heads have more character.

I keep the hair and beards reasonable though, and they've all got a helmet on their belts. Going to war without a helmet would be stupid.

When my dad was in the Marine Corps, the black guys (not being racist here okay, so don't even make a comment about it) that had afros would pack them full of grease, and squish it into a hair net or durag type of thing so that their hair would stay down during inspection and fit in helmets. The same thing would work with Space Wolf hair. I bet if you knew you were going to ware your helm, or even going into combat at all, you would braid your long hair to keep it out of the way.

===Edit== I also use planty of helmets anyways. Models with upgrades or special individuals get bare heads, but I also do this to mix bits with vanilla marine parts, and keep the wolfiness from being ridiculous on troops. Only long fangs wolf guard and other important units like HQ's get decked out all the way.

In 2nd Ed wasn't it stated somewhere that power armor produced some kind of force field around the head when the helmet was removed? Personally, most of my wolves are helmetless to make them stand out from my IF who are almost exclusively helmeted. The few that are helmeted are mostly my plasma gunners (incl pistols, guns & cannons) & helmets are different colored by their rank eg: blood claws have red helmets, grey hunters have black helmets, thunderwolves have standard armor colored helmets & long fangs have standard helmets w/ white & red detailing. Wolf Guard usually don't wear helmets & none of my HQ have them. I don't have any vehicles w/ exposed crew so that doesn't really matter yet.
