Arjac earns his reputation

I took a 2000 point Wolf list to BritCon this weekend (BritCon is run by the British Historical Games Society but allows a 40k section). There was only 12 of us but we had a good time. The fact that there was only 6 tables made the weekend more "chummy" if you will, with everybody aware of what was happening on the tables around them. I included Arjac, who led a pack of 10 Hunters and a Wolf Priest in a Crusader. I have to say Arjac owned every table I played on. Amongst a huge tally of kills was; a Grey Knight librarian, a marine Chapter Master, an opposing Wolf Battle Leader, a Wolf Priest, a dreadnought plus numerous other lesser kills. The most notable game was against the Grey Knights. Arjac and his squad held the centre of the table single-handedly, defeating 2 strike squads with the help of the Hunters and when they were eventually killed off defeating another 2 squads (1 of which was terminators including the libby). He died when attacked by another squad and a halberd managed to get through (that was the only game he died). Enough waffle, I just thought I'd let the Fang know why Grimnar chose the Rock as his champion, he's awesome. He certainly earned his rep (and me 3rd place).

Perhaps we should start a "Today Arjac killed..." thread.

I love the Khârn thread, alas none of our heros are so.. iconic in the way that Space Wolves = ?? like.. Thousand Sons = Arhiman or World Eaters = Khârn so on so forth..

Perhaps a merging of all the Today So-in-so Killed threads for a one stop shop for space wolf stomp?

Sounds like you had a fantastic time, great job for making a good table story. ^^

We have a large number of potencially awe inspiring Heros though, just the main issue is that we don't tend to use them as lists would require us to tutor towards them and hence break the golden combination of Grey Hunters, Long Fangs, Rune Priest and plenty of armour that is standard for us.

Longan, we already know about him. He does not need to prove his saga. His ability to take many wolfguard can make some seriously missle heavy lists, and tough elite armies.

Caius is quite cheap for a Thunder Wolf Lord, and can get firmly lodged in. No inval save though, and his leadership is subpar for a Lord. Meaning you are using slightly more for HQ then you normally would. But is a cheap lord on the flipside and is cheap and fast enough to earn back his points. Fen Wolves as troops is interesting though, very good for chewing frail stuff up since they are fairly agilie, though not hard hitting.

Ragnar is silly expensive, but can change a entire list to get furious charge, and his charges are really deadly. No eternal warrior, though decent 4+ inval save. He is a very hard sell for his cost though, with either the potencial to crave an epic saga, or die like a bunch of puppies flung into a river. The problem is, he simply provides too much of all round ability to be affordable for a marine army, and too expensive to be an effective Khârn.

Adjack is a expensive charcter, though undoubtably epic. He's the same as Ragnar, termi armour just makes him hard to slot in, but having a hidden lord in a squad of anything from grey hunters, to blood claws... By god, he can be seriously deadly and immensely hard to kill. He's probably the closest to a Khârn we get, since he's not rediciously expensive (just under 160 points) for a melee powerhouse. Expensive? Yeah, but he's tough and is near impossible to pick out without killing every other guy in his unit.

Nijal could be epic, but is extremely expensive for a charcter that has greatly reduced effectiveness if going second. If he didn't have that, he would still be a tough sell, but perhaps one fairly likely to slip into a list.

Lukas... If he could be taken in skyclaws, I would be more inclined to have crazy fun. I dislike bloodclaws as it is. He's another tough sell. Not much you can do with him. He really should be able to be taken in swiftclaws and Skyclaws for extra cost, easpically since some of his best fluff in the codex comes from him making a crazy run with a jetpack. As he is, he doesn't feel quite as out there as he really should be. When Arjac is out in the same codex, he's just kind of meh unless you got a lot of points to spare.

I often take Arjac in my logan wing lists, shoving him in a drop pod and throwing him at my enemies thickest concentration of units. One game I dropped him near 2 daemon princes, and took a few wounds off both with combined shooting, they charged his unit, and he killed both of them in 1 round...

Oh and Arjac costs 188 points, as hes an upgrade to a wolf guard, but still worth the points I feel.

Arjac has become my mainstay and hero. I've been struggling with daemons thanks to all their monstrous creatures. But arjac was born to tear princes and greater daemons like butter. Logan and arjac are beastly, i've been meaning to try out arjac and ragnar though.k

Edit: I'd try arjac and ragnar only for the extra attacks, I know furious charge isn't going to help rockfist at all.

Agree on the monster killing issue, Arjac is very good at it. However in one game, against chaos marines which included a summoned greater daemon, I had a Long Fang pack in a small wooded area with an attached Rune Priest (got to love missiles/living lightning/split fire). The daemon assaulted this unit with the assault going something like this;

daemon charges in

daemon has no assault grenades or similar equipment/abilities

Rune Priest and unit counter attack

Rune Priest gets a couple of hits on the daemon

wounds on a 2+

daemon fails 1 invulnerable save

daemon is not eternal warrior

Rune Priest passes Ld test

daemon falls over

I try not to laugh too hard

I wish I were that lucky, the chaos daemon codex has it's special entry that ALL daemons can not die to any insta death effects, and my buddy scrapped his chaos marines for chaos daemons.

Yeh all the Chaos players I've had dealings with have either gone straight Daemons, or are now using the Space Wolf codex.
