What is a good wolfy color?

Recommended Posts

I know the answer should be SW grey but as ive been chugging along on my army I was wondering which would be better Fernis Grey, Shadow Grey, or a mix and with a blue or a black wash? Just wondering what looks better I just think SW Grey isnt blue enough or will it do good over fernis? I will be busting out brother PB (my tester) to do some work but I just wanted some opinions from more venerable brothers here.

I personally like blue-greys for space wolf colrs, and as a favorite color. THe problem with most straight GW paints, is they're either too blue, ot too grey, and its very hard to get a good mixture. Experiment, thats all I can tell you.

Currently, I just use Adeptus Battlegrey, which I think looks noce, like dark granite.

I think the best colour is a mix of Shadow Grey and Space Wolf Grey highlighted with SW Grey. A wash of black in the recesses works better whilst thinned shadow grey can shade the armour itself. All of this goes over a black spray undercoat and a fenris grey base coat. If you need to shade then fenris grey or shadow grey with a spot of black works nicely.

I'll also add that I've never understood the whole "I just use codex grey". If GW have gone so far as to make a trio of colour specifically to paint Space Wolves, they might be worth using ^_^

If I remember rightly, the original 'Space Wolves Grey' colour was more like Fortress Grey.

And, if GW worked their paint range like that then SW grey and UM blue would be the base coat colours and not the highlights.

Just saying.

The thing with SW is they're not as stuck up as other chapters. So long as grey is the colour then alls good.

Extremely BlackTM would look pretty boss :)

I think the depth of grey GW used for the 13th Company looked tough and crisp and good.

Very simple recipe if you want grey rather then powder blue (and in UK);

Halfords grey primer

black wash

fairly heavy dry brush with codex grey

much lighter dry brush with astronomican grey

details to taste

Yes I did say dry brush. If done properly it's a very good technique and works well on marines. Using this method I can turn out a pack a day if nothing else gets in the way.

Okay, some interesting perspectives. I think I might have to spray brother seargent PB and see how he turns out, but there is no real set in stone color for this? Also in about 45 minutes last night I did get the armor on 18 models basecoated. I have around 43 models including HQs that need painted so I have a lot ahead of me, but I'm doing extreme batch painting while my wife works on some fantasy stuff. I was just shocked at how many I pumped out in Fernis Grey last night in such a short period, and jus tplan to assembly line the tar out of everything. If you want I can post pictures of my mediocre painting, but that can wait when done, or at least have a few models finished (read not just armor base coat). Also small side question for bolters/bolt pistols (I have 42 to paint) what looks better, a black or red casing or just all metal? I will expteriment with this (does pb have a bolter? I forget).

Trying this. Halfords grey primer is a great SW colour.

im working on my spacewolve at the moment.

but its not my style to paint standart colours

my wolves are going to be a icy cold white.

I would actually like to see that, it seems like it would look very striking.

That's what a lot of mine look like too. I've always preferred it.

Lately though, I've been using Greatcoat Grey from the P3 line as a base. It's a more subtle blue than Fenris Grey and darker than either F

MY Space Wolves are painted with the blue-grey color scheme. I feel that I've done very well with the "cold blue" grey that is defined in a few of the books. (And also matches the paint scheme of the 'Eavy Metal painters at the time.)

1. Basecoat with Shadow Grey.

2. mix a batch of 50/50 Shadow Grey/Space Wolves Grey. Cover most of the armor with this. THIS is the REAL Space Wolves armor color. Only the deepest shadows will show the Shadow Grey through.

3. Highlight the edges with Space Wolves Grey.

4. (optional) Mix a bit of white in with the Space Wolves Grey for a final highlight. This is only in the most extreme highlights.

5. Sit back and enjoy some mjod/mead/beer whatever. You're pretty much done.

Depends on the grey I suppose.

Personally, I prefer what's been dubbed 'Pre-Heresy Space Wolves' (Despite the fact I can't find anything to say they changed the color, and think it was just a 'Hey, let's paint them icy-blue from now on' from the 'eavy Metal team, but regardless) because I think the standard scheme from GW is too much like baby blue.

I use Adeptus Battlegrey over a Chaos Black undercoat, with a very watered down black wash (So watered down it seems almost like it's dirty water. Stains the armor slightly to darken it a shade, and gets into the recesses to create nice shadows without forming dark patches or darkening it too much), and then a light drybrush of Fortress Grey to pick out the raised area highlights.

It's relatively simple (Which suits my painting skills at the moment), looks good and works really well with the conversion I'm building (Adam from the Space Wolves Blog's conversion ideas).

I pondered this for many an evening before I took the plunge..

My scheme is:

Fenris Grey -> Badab Black Wash -> 50:50 Fenris/Space Wolf Grey -> 50:50 Shadow Grey/Space Wolf Grey.

I was playing with a pre-heresy scheme but wasn't sure I had the skill to make it not look like a drab grey. Hopefully I have achieved a moody inbetween.

I admit I am not the greatest painter in the world (especially compared to some of the stuff here which is simply stunning), but here is my modest WIP. Apologies for the pic quality.

First post to the boards, so hello everyone!
