Chemical Weaponry?

I'm part of a group that has been designing and fleshing out chapters using the Rites of Battle character creator for the better part of six months. One of the chapters I've been working on, the Guardians Exemplar was rolled to make use of a unique vehicle weapon. We had decided for this to be chemical weapons. The idea was their whirlwinds are equipped with toxic and corrosive gas missiles that function like traditional WWI style chemical weapons. Their bikes are equipped with the same corrosive gas, but it is released from vents on the side of the bikes, creating both a vision impairing smoke screen and being corrosive to anyone who enters it. Their land speeders would function as low flying precision strike vehicles, dropping the chemical weaponry on specified targets.

Of course the Exemplars and all of their equipment is treated in such a way that it can't affect themselves. They say they it is their absolute purity that allows them to walk where others would be burned away or poisoned, but in truth it's just technology.

My question is this: Is there any precedent for marines using chemical weaponry? Not necessarily on a massive scale like virus-bombing, but for single battles?

The issue with chemical warfare in a 40k environment is aliens. Are Orks and Tyranids going to react in the same manner to a chemical as human would? How about the T'au and Eldar? What about Necrons? I am not saying it isn't possible, but it wouldn't be as effective as you might think. There are examples of chemical-based warfare though, such as the Imperial Guard Bane Wolf. As for Marines, I can't think of one off the top of my head but I don't think that should stop you. A predator armed with chem cannon sounds kind of cool.
Get hold of the old 2nd ed wargear book if you can - there were plenty of gas/chem weapons in there - it was always just assumed that your army would have the relevant toxins equipped for the enemy they were to face. That being said - its a bit of a waste to use astartes for chem weapon deployment isnce IG can do that just as well, and the astartes could be doing other things...

Offcourse, a specialised Vehicle weapon could also be restricted to just one vehicle. Like say the BA's Baal Predator, except your Chapter has a Chemical Agent instead of assault cannons.

I like the idea, by the way, of something else than just the standard warfare.

I see rebreathers.

Lots of rebreathers.

Well, the acid will work regardless of alien. :)

And you are forgetting the Hellfire rounds. ;)

The corrosive mix will be a little bit problematic, think wraithbone.
