Ingo Pech and Alpharius (Ingo Pech Finished)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

This will be my first WIP so be merciful haha The concept is a straight forward one; I have been commissioned to build and sculpt Alpha Legion Captain Ingo Pech and Alpharius for a friend of mine's pre-heresy tournament army.

As per Alpha Legion tradition there is very little information around about armament and equipment and general appearance apart from the fact that they all look the same :D My friend is insistent however that I don't just make two tactical marines... That said I have some work to do :P The project is at the conceptual art stage only at the moment so for now I hope you'll be content with some of my previous work.

I have taken numerous Green Stuff commissions recently as people have given me lots of encouragement. These are some of my most recent projects. (apologies for the shabby quality of the photographs)

lol, two tac marines would have been great to turn in for the work on the Alphas

*edit* That Sicarius conversion very nice, btw. I think the regular figure, while well sculpted and very detailed, leaves a lot to be desired in how he's posed. I like yours much better.

nice green stuff fu there brother :)

but it looks like you were a little sloppy with the mixing in some parts.

sicarius' cape and the cape of your dante stand in both got those not properly mixed yellow parts in them.

that might show in the painting and "ruin" a fantastic conversion. but nonetheless great work! looking forward to more :D

Thanks everyone for your kind and constructive words :)

Vairocanum: The price of my work varies depending on how long it is expected to take, I also like to communicate with my commission owners on every step of the process including the artwork stage which I feel is essential. Just drop me a message when/if you're interested in having some work done and we'll work something out.

I've decided to begin the project proper with Ingo Pech and as such here are some photographs of the initial concepts:

This is the more or less finished concept drawing of Ingo Pech, Note that the pose is in many ways similar to the image of the Warrior who claimed to be Alpharius on the front cover of LEGION: Secrets and lies. I decided that as the equipment of the alpha legion and indeed the appearance of them is more or less the same the only practical way to illustrate veteran status is through posture and battle readiness. In the same way that Marneus Calgar in the famous artwork of him sitting on the throne of ultramar still seems very powerful when at rest I will attempt to incorporate the self-certainty and near arrogance of the Alpha Legion's subversive tactics by showing them at rest or moving into position.

Another interesting detail noted in Legion: Secrets and lies, was Grammaticus' observation that the Alpha Legion use darkness as a tool. For this reason I am toying with the idea of modelling a hood over Alpharius' face so that despite having him helmetless he will be difficult to identify while at the same time standing out against the rest of the army.

For the power weapon I was eager to incorporate elements of Assassins Creed type equipment, specifically the bladed vambrace. This could also be an ideal place for the bolt pistol.

Since Alpharius looks like many in the legion, you should try to keep him looking like any other senior officer, so having both his weapons hidden might look suspicious in battle. Keep the blade because it is awesome, but the hidden pistol should go.

btw, Pech's pose looks spot-on

Update:

I have now produced a finished concept drawing of the Ingo Pech model. I've also begun work on the model itself. So far no green stuff but the plain armour plating is on. I've used a stripped down chaos MkII as the base for the Alpha MKIV torso. I've also cleared off the curved tops of the knee pads in order lay a frame for sculpted MKIV pads.

I have it on good authority that the cloak should be on the opposite side to the dagger, thus cloak and dagger, as the cloak was used as a kind of weapon for disarming and so on by covert killers and assassins etc. Either way I think the right arm cloak looks better because the ominous Hydra symbol which the owner of the commission asked to be on the model is partially covered.

I should be doing the first few layers of green stuff tomorrow, after a birthday celebration. To give you an idea of the aim, look at the front cover of Legion:Secrets and Lies, his MKIV plate is what Ingo Pech's will look like, even though the one on the front cover is Omegon pretending to be Alpharius...

Shining Storm 101 makes a good point, I could be leading you astray... Is it Alpharius at all! I may make Omegon in the future but that depends entirely on whether my friend wants him made. A possible project of my own design will be the Mournival.

Astrum Vinco, I am inclined to agree with you. My intent was never to hide his weapons per say but to show that they were there without blatantly having them out. perhaps a bulge in his half cloak, or Alpharius reaching for his bolt pistol (if he even has one). I've been toying with the idea of having him in world eater clad having read age of darkness recently but there's no way to tell if it really was Alpharius

I really like your concept ideas, they suit nicely although i am not a fan of the cape but to be fair i never am on any model, looking forward to seeing more on the model as you have made a great start!

My Pech is a bit different, using chains rather than rope, in the style of the bezerkers. I do like your first drawing of him. Somehow better I think. Cant wait to see how this turns out.

Hey everyone, sorry for the delay, it suffices to say that it was a party which would put the Emperor's Children to shame :S

I have made some progress with the initial green stuff layers. Still to go are the details on the feet, the shoulder pad symbols, the cloak, the purity seals and other trims etc. I've also sculpted a custom MKIV helmet which I've yet to photograph which I'm tempted to place instead of the bare head. Bear in mind that these are the base and un cleaned layers of green stuff, once they're cleaned up they'll look a lot less clumsy ;) Without further ado here is Ingo Pech as he is now.

As I said on the first post I'm in the practice of communicating with my clients throughout the process. There was an amusing conversation in fact which he and I had regarding the way in which we should depict Alpharius. I suggested doing him in World Eater Plate as per the Age of Darkness Story :D As much as he thought it'd be funny he gracefully said no :D So for now I'm searching for inspiration in every Alpha Legion related piece of Literature I can get my hands on, also research into special forces, subterfuge history in warfare and even Ninjas haha Lets hope I find something nice to splice onto a big marine :D

Actually, I'd expect Alpharius and Omegon to wear normal Astartes battle plate. Think about it, they try to blend themselves into the legion, and not be singled out from one another (much). If you want to try the more ornate route however, armour that more represents roman-greek armour would work. I have always seen the Alpha Legion having greco-roman influences in their style. Lots of leather strips and studded armour.

My 2p.

On your scuplt at the moment, Its going very well. I would have said to have larger looking shoulder pads, to make it a bit more menacing, but he is looking damn cool. Better sculpting than on my true scale Ingo Pech.
