A new Space Wolf

Recommended Posts

Greetings, Space Wolves!

I'm new to this board, to this game, and very interested in starting a Space Wolves Chapter army, which I find to be by far the most captivating in terms of background fiction. Always been a fan of the Nordic, Viking-esque themes, so this definitely caught my interest.

So, I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello to everyone, was wondering if anyone could give me any tips or pointers for someone starting out! :)

First of all hello, and welcome to the board :)

I'm more into the painting side of things so I can't offer you much about the game but I'm better with a paint brush in hand :) The only tip I can offer really is do the job properly. When you're painting don't rush, take your time, and care about the quality of your painting. The result is a nicely painted army which you have pride in - the result of that is that when you put the army down on the table for the first time, people appreciate the fact that you've put in the effort :) In a way it shows respect for your opponent and the DICE GODS of course :P I find this makes the hobby a lot more rewarding and there's always a warm feeling when someone peers over at the HQ you spent weeks painting and says 'hey that looks good'...... You might get creamed in the game due to less time spent at a gaming table and more on a painting table but at least your guys looked good :D

Again hope you enjoy your time here

All the best

Matt

Good advice on the painting thing but don't be hesitant in getting some games under your belt. Is there a local gaming group you could go to, or a GW in your area? Reading the rulebook is a good grounding but there's nothing like getting a game in. Borrow some models if you can if you haven't bought many. That way you can try different troop types before settling on the ones you actually want to buy. It can be an all consuming hobby so take your time and welcome to the Fang (or Aett if your a HH bunny).

Welcome to the Fang!

I'mma beat Mav_girl to the punch and ask if you'd feel like telling us a bit about yourself?

I'm also an avid painter of the hobby, but you could paint anything, any model, yet you chose Space Wolves of W40k, and being the great game that it is (opinions noted), you'd be remiss to shirk playing it as often as you can and showing your friends (and enemies!) just what us Wolves are capable of!

As for places to start, I highly recommend checking out this thread started by Brother Ramses. Most particularly where he mentions a helpful thread on how to go about building your army thoughtfully.

I also agree with the "old git" on this being an all-consuming hobby. You'll find yourself spending vast amounts of money getting your army the way you want it (perhaps occasionally branching to other armies in time), to the point where you're searching your couch cushions and tugging at loose gold caps... but don't let that discourage you! Everyone who plays has found the hobby rewarding for countless reasons, and I'm sure if you've bothered to post here then you're likely committed enough to have a few reasons of your own. Just be smart in where your purchases go and plan things out. Also, depending on how much you play (and/or how fast or detailed you like to paint) you might not want to build too fast and savor the progression. Buying too fast can overwhelm some people.

We're one of the more active forums here at B&C, so you'll likely get plenty of responses. If you have any questions, we're more than eager to help out a wolf brother, and again, welcome to the Fang!

Only thing I can add is something I have learned playing with Matt, which is always rather comical to us, the most recently painted units always get smurfed quickly. All in all, just have fun, and don't let the first try at using a unit decide if you like them of not. Also, your skills will improve them more you play or paint, this is an always evolving hobby. Now all that's left is to get out there and play some games.

First off, welcome! You've chosen one of the armies w/ the most rich backgrounds & heritage. We also don't need all the fancy toys borrowed from the Grey Knights to make us cool :P . As for starting out, the great thing about Space Wolves is that the sky is pretty much the limit where you get started honestly. For example if you want all terminator army, then buy a couple boxes of SW termies (I'd recommend some regular termies as well) & Logan Grimnar.

I'd start w/ Assault on Black Reach if you're a completely newb to 40K. It's a great way to learn the rules, the minis are great practice & despite them being uni-pose, they can be a great start as Grey Hunters. It also gets you a dread & an HQ character to work w/. From there, once you get comfortable w/ the ruleset in the box, grab the SW codex, a SW pack box & a devastators squad. That should give you a great core to your army in the form of 2 Grey Hunter packs, an HQ, a dreadnought & a Long Fangs pack. Where you go from there is really up to you. The Space Wolf battleforce is an excellent purchase from that point, as are razorbacks, vindicators & predators &, depending on your play style (you'll start to know by then) landspeeders, bikers, terminators, drop pods, scouts etc.

But I digress. Welcome to the Fang & remember, no question is a dumb question when you're first starting out so ask away, you can always PM me if you have anything pressing on your mind lol. I'm not the greatest player or painter, but I do love the Sons of Russ, I've played them since 2nd Ed.

Welcome t the Fang. I see the ranks of Blood Claws growing again! I can't say much other than repeat the prior advice. Take your time, post as often as you feel comfy, and enjoy the ride. Some here growl more than the others but it is more like a vet with new troops. Trying to help. People are not shy here. Pull up a chair and grab an ale for yourself. Just don't fall asleep or pass out. Nasty things can happen.

Hey thanks for the warm welcome, all! ;)

Well, a little bit about me. Let's see...

For about two years now, I used to play Battletech with my brother (still do), so I guess I'm from MechWarrior stock. I rolled with House Davion, 5th Crucis Lancers, playing around the 3050-3058 time period. (Didn't play Clan Wolf nor Wolf's Dragoon, although that would be TOO appropriate now, wouldn't it? Lol).

In terms of painting, I'm decent with a brush, I would say. Definitely not the best and not the fastest of painters, ask me to wet-blend or do non-metallic gradients and I'll probably run away and hide.

One thing's for sure, in Battletech at least, there was nothing better than having a painted lance face off against an opposing painted lance, and that was only like 5 models per players. I can only imagine the satisfaction of having a battalion's worth of troops painted upon the battlefield, so I'm definitely excited for that. =)

In terms of 40K, I've only seen my friend play and I myself have tried a few games of Dawn of War. Never touched the tabletop game, until now at least, and I haven't even glanced at any of the reading materials or core rulebooks save for the Space Wolves Codex, which I had a strong urge to buy when I visited the friendly neighborhood hobby store. Definitely a decision I am not regretting, I love the material and I am still reading through it. First time I read about the Wolves was from an old Dwarf magazine my friend gave me. It was an anecdote, I believe, Logan and the Wolves fighting demons alongside Grey Knights and common soldieries or some such. Very interesting stuff, caught my intrigue when I first read it.

So yeah, I guess that's pretty much how I encountered 40k. Pretty recent too. And definitely seeing how active and welcoming people on this board are, I'm definitely feeling comfortable approaching this game, or at least, this faction.

One quick question: Is the Space Wolves codex all I will need to play as Space Wolves? Is it like an expansion of the Space Marine codex, in a sense that will I need to purchase that one as well?

Thanks all!

PS-

Ale, you say? Do Space Wolves drink mead, too?? Cuz that would be just too good!

Our codex is a stand alone book. No need to buy the Space Marine Codex, and it's allot older! besides we have everything we need in our own book.

And so Greenhorn (Arez) starts again!

The best things you'll find outside the basic game in terms of SW it the flexibility painting wise. General view is so long as its grey, anything goes. The other is the camaraderie. I've not found a bunch like the lot here in any other sub forum on here. Honest, fun and blunt as a brick at times but without malice.

Make sure to go and drool over Iactons Bjorn if you haven't already ;)

GW sells a starting package called "Assault on Black Reach" which has enough models for two people to start opposing armies as well as dice, templates, etc.. but what I consider the real prize is the 'mini' core 40k rulebook. In essence, it's the same amount of info as the actual rulebook, but without all the photos and fluffy stuff.

Now, the whole set is costly, though some might find it worth buying, but if you're after a rulebook and don't want to pay $60 for the big boy, you can try looking for the mini book on eBay for roughly $10. IMO well worth it and far more convenient than toting 5+ lbs of hardcover.

New edition? For the codex, too?

Does the company that make 40k change editions a lot?

The Black Reach looks like a pretty good deal, but unfortunately, I don't know anyone that would want the Orc miniatures it comes with, at least not these space ones (an unusual idea, but intriguing, space orcs that is).

BTW- Good news! I bought myself my first box squad of space wolves and bargained some old space marine models off of some friends. The work desk is now filled with paints, and files, and plastic dust and whatnot. ;)

Almost done with one of the wolves, a... uhhh... Blood Claw, I believe they are called? I'm guessing those are the close-combat ones, but I dunno.

So, yeah, is it OK if I post pictures on this board? Maybe get some comments or pointers and such?

Oh and also, what are these strange ribbons some of the marines seem to have on their legs? Medals of some sorts?

GW updates every 5 to 8 years. The codex is still fairly current GW wise though so no panic. Just go for the models you like.

Lots of people post pictures so go for it. Check the 101 at the home page for pointers.

As for the ribbons....purity seals.

New edition as in the big rule book, NOT the codex. Our codex is still new, why would we get a newer codex?

To be politically correct, every space wolf are a close-combat specialist, but Blood Claws (Swift and Sky) are the assault oriented packs. Personally, I'd stick to Grey Hunters! why? well read through this link and hopefully you'll understand the benefits of Hunters over Claws. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=224618

Ummm yes, we do it all the time. Look through the forum, and you'll see people post pictures. How to post pictures, http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=141716 and the ribbons you speak of, are purity seals. Look it up, or google it to learn more.

Well if you survive you'll make a good whelp. But uh you might want to run. Some of the Grey Hunters dont like a whelp attacking them

*splash ale from my mug all over your face and smash your teeth with said mug*

I don't see a whelp, I see only a toad. Your gonna have to hit me harder than that, just to floss my teeth properly! *turns at greenhorn* as for you Arez.. your all bark, now that there is a new tenderfoot in town, and I use the term tenderfoot because you'll always be our greenhorn Arez. *turns to the toad* grabbing him by the throat. If I squeeze your neck hard enough will toothpaste come out? I wanna see which one of your eyes poop out first. *drops the toad hard on the ground* If you wanna fight, go to the tavern and prove your worth! I'll be waiting *walks away*

-edit-

Oh and don't ever waste good ale like that again! or I'll have the tavern cut-off the rest of the whelps supply for an entire month if you do. They can all thank you for that! :)
