Gumbafish's Imperial Fists

Hey all I thought I would share some imperial fists I have been working on. These are the first three I did just to test things out and make sure the scheme wasn't overly time consuming to do on more than one miniature. The bionic marine is a conversion I've had sitting around for a while and I was happy to finally paint him, the rest of the squad also has some other fun conversions.

A bit about the scheme. I happen to like weathered marines, so I added the usual chips and some dirty shading and washes to the decals. I try to keep the weathering in check and don't go overboard. The scheme was meant to be simple without a lot of additional colors so I could keep the number of paints used smaller. I also went with the blacked out bolters because every assault rifle I have seen is all black and figured why wouldn't space marines also have this. I mean nobody probably wants a glint from a piece of shiny silver giving them away...then again these boys are bright yellow so maybe they don't care about stealth.

The rest of the first squad are ready to go so I'll post pics as progress happens. I hope you like them, this is my first real attempt at yellow.

** Replaced the pictures, hopefully they are in better focus now. I'm not really sure what happened before

Wow! Absolutely fantastic job. I really love the blacked out bolters, it works really well... Dare I ask how you went about painting them that way?

I replaced the pictures so hopefully they are in better focus now.

As for the bolters here is what I did

-basecoat P3 coal black (I added in some matte medium too because it tends to be a little shiney, but if you spray them later for protection anyways then I guess this isn't needed)

-Shade with badaab black to get some definition

-highlight edges with reaper masters series coldstone grey

-highlight, on the very extreme areas like the tip of the site and top half of the barrel, reaper masters series dark elf highlight.

They are looking good so far, I like the battle damage and the bionics especially. Does the P3 Coal Black have a bluish tint to it? I thought I read that somewhere and was thinking of getting a bottle to try it for highlights on my black bolters. It would be nice to get a little info before I special order it from the local gaming shop.

Thanks guys glad you like them.

mikhail, the coal black does have I think a tealish/blueish tint to it and it is definately not a pure black like the citadel black. If you want next time I work on some marines I could just paint a line of chaos black and coal black next to each other on one of their bases if you want to see for yourself. I personally think its a really nice color and you'd like it, but this way you could decide.

That would be great if you don't mind. I'm going to go ahead and order a bottle too so I can try it myself.

Thanks guys for the nice comments.

Here is the recipe for the yellow, I airbrushed parts of it but I think you could get by without doing that. I will included the airbrushing stuff though in case you are curious

-Airbrushing

-25 Iyandend darksun:10 golden yellow:30 water. This was because these marines have been painted and stripped a few times and my initial white priming wasn't a completely consistant surface, since the foundation paints have nice coverage I did this step first to get an even surface.

-golden yelow, about 1:1 ratio of paint to water. I think if you had an even white surface you could just start right here.

Painting

-Shade with a mix of 2:1, devlan mud:water in all of the joints etc

-Shade the joints, just more carefully in a finer line, with brown wash. Now this is the really old blue top brown wash from citadel so I don't know what a substitude would be, perhaps just another shading of devlan mud or maybe a devlan mud badaab black mix? Other companies may have a similar color also.

-Highlights of sunburst yellow

-extreme highlights of around a brushfull of sunburst yellow: a small dab of vallejo off white, but I think really any white color would be similar

Camouflage is the color of cowardice.
