The Chapter's Future

I think they could move it forward, but slowly. As in tectonic plate slowly. Every rulebook move forward a century or so, i imagine it would leave enough space in the fluff for some major plot developments in small areas (in certain sectors, or armies/races) while not affecting the overarching feel of the 40k-verse. Did anyone else feel they moved forward with the new rulebook. In the last one they seemed to be pointing towards a big fight in the future, but now all the books point to it being right over the horizon. Anybody else?
Maybe we'll end up like grey knights and our previous fluff will be altered so matt ward can have his fun and we'll have a semi bastardized fluff.

::shudder::

Way too much fluff for the wolves to be changed now without a mass exodus and loss of customers.

I don't think so, really. From when the game was released (1987) to 2000, they used to progress the "in-game" time for every "real-world" calendar year. When they got to 2000, someone realized they couldn't keep doing this without rolling over into a new millennium, so they just stopped the clock. No more forward progress, no more passage of time. Much has changed in the past 11 years, but it has all been adjustment/retcon of previous "known" events; nothing "next" has happened. Although you may get a sense of a different tone in the setting (e.g. the whole 1 minute to Midnight feel that they've tried to establish) as they rewrite some of the fluff in each rulebook, the "present" in 5th Edition is the same as it was in the 4th, and even the 3rd Edition of the game.

Based on this, unless something drastic happens at GW to shake up their strategy, I seriously doubt they will ever bother to advance the clock again. It is much safer, and easier, to just continue to fill in historical information. There is a lot of blank canvas to work on with 10,000+ largely unexplored years. That's why the Black Library can do whatever they want with the Horus Heresy series; it gives them a basis for churning out a couple dozen pulp fiction novels, but has absolutely no effect on the state of the Imperium today. Logan Grimnar is still the Old Wolf, and Ragnar Blackmane is still the Young King. I don't expect that to ever change.

I'm curious to see what my brothers have to say about the future of our chapter

The Wolftime.

Does Russ hold true to his promise?

dammit greenhorn! you should be flogged and skinned alive for even doubting that! russ always does what he swears! he never breaks an oath! are you calling leman of the russ an oathbreaker?*slowly pulls out his bolter*

No.He might be busy hunting his traitorous brothers and or finding away to revive the Allfather and or finding a way to kill the Ruinous powers. He might not come back when the wolftime starts thats why I asked Lord Ragnarok if he thinks the Wolf King would come back.

methinks what our little Greenhorn was trying to say is: did Russ mean he'd be back to lead us in the battles, or would he be back to settle some scores individualy, while giving us hope, and thus the power to do what needs be done, merely be his presence.

(if I'm wrong in this Arez, please feel free to tell me. I'll ignore it, but still :tu:)

youre wrong.i know he said he'd be back to lead/join us in the Wolftime.

what i was wondering was if Lord Ragnarok thinks Russ would be back or not

listen closely my brethern, for my life's breath is all but spent. There shall come a time far from now when our chapter itself is dying, even as I am now dying, and our foes shall gather to destroy us. Then, my children, I shall listen for your call in whatever realm of death holds me, and come I shall no matter what the laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime."

nowhere does it say he'll be back to lead us, just that he'll be back, and we'll know it :tu:

Ya but do you really think he'd let say Logan Grimnar order him around? No, Russ would take command

First thing Russ would do when he gets back, challenge Bjorn to an arm wrestle (dreadnaught, smedgnaught!) and then kick Logan off his throne. After a short message sent via rune priest, the 13th comes back from the warp and they decide the highlords have messed up Daddy's empire enough.
And while i like Ragnar, i would worry for the chapter in his hands. He is a good company leader, but does he have the wisdom to play diplomacy for the whole of the chapter? I could see him being a leader akin to Ironhelm perhaps.. making some grave headstrong mistake. Something Logan would likely have the wisdom and cunning to foresee. But hey, if it gets Ragnar Eternal Warrior then i suppose im down for that! >_>

Ragnar has been groomed for leadership since his early days. Maybe even for the position of Great Wolf itself. He was placed in the WolfBlade by Logan Grimnar to experience the highest level of politics/diplomacy on Terra itself.

Ragnar seems to be the opposite of how you describe him. He isn't headstrong and prone to grave mistakes. His previous Wolf Lord (Berek Thunderfist) fits that description better. Berek would chase glory at the cost of high casualties. The novels portray Ragnar as disagreeing with that and thinking more long term. Ragnar also seems to recognize the risk of falling victim to his own rage.

The codex also mentions that Ragnar has the most warriors in his Great Company (i.e., high survival rate) compared to the other Wolf Lords (not including Logan himself).

It may be the "obvious" choice based on current fluff but I'm sure they could throw some curves at us if Ragnar becomes the old wolf in the future.

Probably more because the fluff in the warhammer 40K rulebook makes him appear extremely reckless, reckless bravdo, and his rules portraying him as a streight forward leader. Though then again, I imagine that the standard wolf layout would be how he would lead normally. Just when he takes to the field, he's going to break them with an all out assualt.
