A17roolz's Ultramarine Blog

It's been a while since I took up brush and paints (and all manner of miniature related tools), but a lot of my friends are getting back into the hobby so I decided to throw my gauntlet once more and get back into the hobby. I already have a 1,500pt Necron army, but Games Workshop seem to be avoiding their new codex like the plague, so I figured I would restart my very first army back when I was 12/13 years of age and terrible with a paint brush... the Ultramarines.

I know plenty of people who hate this chapter with a passion due to their unfortunate popularity with newer and younger members and their "basic" look compared to the more celebrated (modelwise) Black Templars, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves etc. so I aim to prove the non-believers wrong. Ultramarines are loosely based on the Roman Empire, so that will be where I will take my inspiration from. I will also be basing my army on the canonical 2nd Company spread in the codex, taking creative licensing where I feel it is justified.

First things first however, I need 2 Troops and 1 HQ choice to even partake in the smallest of battles. For this reason I have decided to sort a 5 man Tactical Squad and a 5 man Scout squad up first, to have minimum numbers before I add to the list.

I decided that my basic troops, with the exception of prehaps sergants, should be fairly basic as to save time, but also because I don't want to lose what makes my army Space Marines amongst all that Roman glory.

So here is a quick snap of my first 5 man Tactical Squad thus far:

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/3412/ultramarinestacticalman.jpg

This will be the 2nd Squad of the 2nd Company, Tactical Squad Manorian, AKA "The Shield Bearers". The codex states the following:

"Boasting many experienced and honoured warriors, Squad Manorian leads the vanguard of both Company and Chapter-level assaults."

With this in mind, I imagined the squad walking head long into battle, and thus modelled my marines (or chose in the case of the sergant) accordingly. The marine on the far left was custom made using both an assault marine's right leg and a tactical marine's left leg, pinned and made to look natural using greenstuff.

I will update when I have more. Comments and criticisms are always welcome!

Well I haven't had a chance to paint anything for the last 3 days, but I got a hard day's painting and have finished the body work of the first 5 Marines of Squad Manorian:

And here is a close up of the man himself, Sergant Manorian:

Annoyingly I live in a flat with no garden, so spraying up the rest is going to be annoying... not to mention all the lovely rain we've been having, but I'll work around that. I do need to do the bases now. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of doing something different from my Necrons (which are brown with static grass). I was thinking snowy bases to fit in with the Tyrannic War setting, but unsure.

I've also been eyeing this up on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/anvilindustry/m....rom&_ipg=25

It doesn't matter what table you play on. I'd go with something new you would want to try out. If you really are on the fence about which to do, you could do snow based, with perhaps ash drybrushed on top to symbolize that there is a volcanic structure around, something burning a fuel substance to produce the black/grey/whatever color. Things to that nature would be fine.

P.S. If you are limiting yourself to one table, you need to expand, you're missing out, mate.

I do like the snow and ash idea... might look into that! Thanks!

As to the table, you are right, I don't like to be limited to one table, I do plan on expanding. The only table we have to use as of right now is an ashen one, but I've been highly inspired by playing Halo 3 to make a snow board. Got some ideas, just need to get my backside in gear and make it...

Ok, I've decided on a normal (IE dirt and grass) basing with some snow, kind of like this example.

Just to get some ideas, would the bog standard GW snow flock be good for this or are there other methods I should look into? I've seen tutorials on the baking soda/pva method, but not entirely sure if this would be "too" fresh, plus I've heard of problems with this turning yellow...

They look great well painted U.M can be show stoppers.

The hate is more towards the fluff and the poster boy love GW gives them.

Thanks! I've been a little conscious about the painting quality, wondering if I could do better with my own experience, but if the fine people of B&C think it's good, then I have nothing to worry about ^_^

I agree with the poster boy love GW gives the Ultramarines means they are fairly disliked, but I hope to make mine stand out somehow and not live up to the boring, basic marine look GW loves to slap them with.

You can mix the GW snow with PVA got get a thicker snow effect, it works pretty well.

Yeah, I've been looking into different methods of this. There's an interesting method I read about involving super sluing granulated sugar in spots then flocking the base with PVA/Snow to get lumpy snow. Might look into that...

Really nice so far. You've done a brillian job with the gold metalics -- what did you do (sorry to ask such a banal question)

Thanks, fairly simple to achieve actually. I did the following (remember to water down your paints, several thin layers give a better coat and all that B)):

1) Paint the areas with Shining Gold over black. If you've watered down the paints you don't have to be neat especially with the first layer, just slap it on more or less.

2) Give the whole area a fairly liberal wash with Badab Black wash, one coat should do.

3) Highlight with a Shining Gold/Mithril Silver mix. I tend to find the gold is runnier than the silver so I use a mix that is roughly 2:1 ratio, so that the silver doesn't overpower the gold too much.

4) If, like with my sergant, the details become semi merged together, carefully paint where the recesses should be with watered down Chaos Black. I did this step between the picture in my first post and the second set of pictures just to give you an idea.

Well I finally decided on how to do my bases and pulled my finger out to do it. I decided to keep the snow idea, but mix it with a "standard looking base" to get a sort of snow melting type effect. I used the "woodland winter" method of flocked described on the Games Workshop Site. So, here's my squad thus far (still need to spray up arms!):

Also, I'm pretty happy with the way my sergant's purity seals came out, so I figured I'd post a picture of them too:

  • 2 weeks later...

Right, I've had a lucky break and now I can paint up arms (in between playing Space Marine on the XBox... loving that game, especially the multiplayer). I'm currently assembly painting them, but thought I would quickly test my recipe for white. Here's a quick update (arms are blue-tacked so I can paint them easier):

And the white, as demonstrated by the beloved Ultramarines chapter symbol:

C&C, as always, welcomed!

Awesome man i love the Ultramarines Building My force slowly i'm going to be sticking some photos up soon

Look forward to seeing them!

Anyhoo, I've been feverishly (literally, I have a fever) working on this squad, wanting to get it done and dusted before tomorrow, when I update my blog and, aside from the squad number, all done! Thinking of using an ink pen to pen the number as it would be far more accurate and easier. Then all they need is some 'ard coat and done!

Liking this so far. I've been wondering if I should just do Ultramarines for my upcoming army and this is not helping...

Love Space Marine as well but did anyone else notice the uniform issues? Titus Captain of the 5th Company.... with gold trim and a large roman numeral 2...

nice!

as for the snow if you want a full snow effect I recommend mixing it with PVA and water in a box, the applied it with a spatula.

it give effect like this :

WARNING THIS LINK CONTAIN HERETIC MACHINERY

Snow

That does look pretty awesome. I may use that at a later date, I quite like how mine came out, as it looks like snow melting on the grass... or maybe I'm just trying to convince myself ;)

Ultramarines are alot less boring than many people make them out to be... at the end of the day, it's the person collecting the army that injects character into their models, not the fluff! But if you're not sure, there's always the option of finding a theme you like and then basing your own DIY chapter around them.

Anyways, if anyone's interested in my recipes, you can view them at my blog here: http://theartofwarhammer.blogspot.com/2011...tramarines.html

Nice work dude, i hope you keep adding to this blog.

Oh I don't plan to quit now :D

I've started the model work on Squad Manorian: Part 2. I wanted to get the Heavy Weapon done and dusted first. I didn't feel the default set up for the missile launcher suited my "Squad Advancing" theme, so I went with a new look. Looking for C&C on this guys! :)
