T0MMY
Hi guys Quick query: If i'm putting together a pre-heresy/heresy era word bearers army - what armour variants can I use? Correct me if I'm wrong, but i'm of the understanding that the heresy occured when mark 5 armour was the latest being worn, with mark 6 armour being distributed during the heresy; is this right? Any help would be appreciated thanks. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/237007-power-armour-variants/ Share on other sites
No Foes Remain
The Mk 5 and 4 were most common with the Traitor Legions, but there were also a number of previous marks as well. The Imperial Fists had a few Mk 6 which they took from Mars, but apart from that nearly all Loyalist Legions had to make do with Mk 4, 3 and at some extents 2. Vodunius
According to the *cough* definitive *cough* armour fluff article in WD129/RT Compendium then when the heresy broke out the legions were half-way through re-equipping with Mk4 - note that Mk3 was a specialized variant used for boarding actions and frontal assaults, it never replaced Mk2 as the standard all-purpose suit. When the heresy erupted Mk4 proved to be untenable and Mk5 was created to replace it, it was issued extensively to the legions - including the Word Bearers - that were dispatched to Isstvan. Mk6 went into production on Mars shortly before it fell to Horus forces whilst Mk7 went into production on Luna shortly before the Siege of Terra itself. Of course your welcome to do what the Black Library authors do and just grab a number out of the hat. TennisBall
If you can avoid using mk7 (at least the helms) which is what most of the current range is based on then you should be fine. Have you looked at the pre-heresy bits guide or the other threads under Horus Heresy - Important Topics? It's the section just above this one. Any help would be appreciated thanks. This might be of help. The Mk. V "Heresy" armor was more commonly seen on traitor Marines at the onset of the Heresy, whereas the Mk. VII "Aquila/Eagle" armor was usually seen only on Loyalist Astartes (after production was moved to Terra and Luna). I haven't seen many (any, really) Mk. VI suits on Chaos Marines, so I can't give you any input there. I am in the same boat as you and want to model my Death Guard army prtially using the older armor variants. I've chosen to stick with a majority of Mk.s II and III, though I will definitely have bits and pieces (and the occasional complete suit) of the Mk. IV and V variants. Lord_Caerolion
Yep, as others have said, if you're planning to do pre-Heresy, you'll be MkIV and earlier, with MkV being invented during the Heresy, and Mk VI/VII being developed towards the end. As the MkIV armour tended to be distributed in larger quantities to the Legions loyal to Horus (funny that...), the Word Bearers would have a decent amount of them. LaCroix
you can argue that mk v can be used as its really the studs that make it stand out and a lot of the fluff points out the studs are actually bolt heads for repaired plating. so really you can use mark 5 and mix it in throughout your army suggesting that your marines are battle hardened and have lots of makeshift repairs. ps i have a pre heresy word bearer army and using mainly mk4 little mk 3 and mk v mk 5 being my fav for some reason Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/237007-power-armour-variants/#findComment-2858330 Share on other sites
