Simo429
How are you doing them? So many tournaments call for squad markings however the codex talks a lot of personal heraldry. Inquisitor Fox
I'm not going to use squad markings myself.. going for personal heraldry. What I was thinking of for when I had two or more units of the same "type" for power armor... well in some example pictures on WD's and older Codices, the swiss cheese part of the Space Marine backpack was done in a copper or gold color instead of metal/silver/boltgun. I was considering using that to help distinguish otherwise identical looking Strike Squads or Purgation Squads. Interceptors and Purifiers are thankfully easier to distinguish, but a similar strategy can be used to distinguish those as well. Terminator Squads I hadn't quite figured out yet... other than marking the bases somehow. Edit: Sister's units I have no bloody idea yet... Aeddon
One thing I've seen is where you color the ring around the base a different color for each squad. This guy at my old store used to do it with his IG squads, really didn't leave any question as far as who belonged to which squad. thade
For Grey Knights, I have a sort of easy way around this, as I'll have only two units (one large 10-Paladin Deathstar, one slightly smaller 7-Paladin Deathstar). With two units, it lets me use color inversion. All models get personalized heraldry...but one unit gets white-on-red, the other gets red-on-white. So, for instance...a white shield with a red cross on it...or a red shield with a large white stripe and thin white stripe on it. Etc. Where more units are involved I might get complicated and have everybody with unique symbols on their otherwise identical shields/shoulder plates (front-half red, back-half white, inverted colors on each for unique decorations). Valerian
I personally just use the heraldry for each Justicar as the squad marking - easier for me. If you want everyone to have their own unique right shoulderpad, though, then you could use BulldogUK's technique, which is to color the Helmet stripe a different color for each unit. Of course, this doesn't work if you intend to use a lot of the bare-heads. Here are examples from 4 different squads: Here is the "red squad" all together: It's actually pretty subtle, but also much easier to distinguish everyone from the "top down" view looking over the tabletop. thade
I really like that! Thank you. I may use that for my Power-armored squads. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/237053-squad-markings/#findComment-2858756 Share on other sites

ValourousHeart
For my sister units I just used hair color. So far I have dark brown hair & black hair... The third squads will be red heads. I am not sure I want blondes, but I may go with a pale brown. I haven't gotten the grey/white hair to look right... But that might be my preference in using ink to give the hair a shine. My big plan was that the brown / black / red hair units could cross CEL / BSS / DOM / & RET squads so I could move basic bolters around, but with the colors and squad comp it should be easy to keep them separate on the table (in theory). CuddlesHeretics
For terminators maybe paint the panelling on the weapons a different colour? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/237053-squad-markings/#findComment-2859436 Share on other sites
