Hi y'all, I'm new to the 40k universe with only 4 games under my belt, played with the old SW codex and now that i go the new one

I have a few questions regarding the Wolf Scouts Pack options.

As i understand it is that they can take the following:

(The "Any model may replace his bolt pistol and/or close combat weapon..." part confuses me quiet a bit.)

the (?) = not sure i am right about it.

Any model may take...

Bolt Pistol / Close Combat Weapon

Sniper Rifle / Close Combat Weapon (?)

Bolter / Close Combat Weapon (?)

Bolt Pistol / Bolter (?)

Bolt Pistol / Sniper Rifle (?)

Only one may take a...

Flamer, Heavy Bolter, Missile Launcher, Plasma Gun

with a Close Combat Weapon (?)

and

Only 2 may take...

Plasma Pistol / Close Combat Weapon

Power Weapon / Bolt Pistol

Thanks in advanced for any Intel i may get on this matter.

Cheers!

Check the FAQ, as I believe there are some clarifications about the wording of these wargear options.

For the 'only X number of models" description, that just means that no matter how many you have in the squad, only X number of those models may have those upgrades. For example, 5 scouts can take (2) plasma pistols or (1) plasma pistol and (1) power weapon, etc.

As far as the CCW or bolt pistol with missile launchers or meltaguns, I really don't know.

(The "Any model may replace his bolt pistol and/or close combat weapon..." part confuses me quiet a bit.)

That part is actually from the first bullet point and not the last. The FAQ covers only the last bullet point as far as wolf scouts options go and i get that one.

Thanks, Vantius for quick response.

Yes, those are all the possible combinations for gearing up Wolf Scouts with either a Boltgun or Sniper rifle.

Also correct. Unlike the above choices, you can only take these special weapons if you sacrifice your bolt pistol.

and

Only 2 may take...

Plasma Pistol / Close Combat Weapon

Power Weapon / Bolt Pistol

No. If you want a power weapon, you must sacrifice your bolt pistol like you did to get your plasma pistol. You still keep your close combat weapon, meaning if you want a power weapon, you will lose a ranged option unless you trade in your normal close combat weapon for either a boltgun or sniper rifle (such as with the first series of options).

Answers in blue.

The reason you're given the option to trade in either bolt pistol or ccw is mainly for making sure you have a ranged weapon when taking a power weapon, however when you take such weapons as the flamer/melta/hvy bolter/missile launcher, and thus sacrificing the option for a bolt pistol, they didn't want you to have such versatility when spending so many points on those special weapons to even consider choosing to fire any other weapon except the ones you purchased.

The key to remember is that when writing up a scout pack, try to think about what's being sacrificed. Considering bolt pistols (and the potential plasma pistol) can be used in close combat, should you want your scouts to Move or Assault in the appropriate phases and still shoot, then the pistols may be your best bet, vs a sniper rifle or missile launcher (heavy weapons cannot move and shoot/shoot and assault) or opting to rapid fire a boltgun/plasma gun. Also because of this, it's more preferred to ditch the CCW first instead of the bolt pistol wherever possible.

Many thanks for your time Wulfebane, this makes a lot more sense now that it's cleared out.

Tho for that last part your answer seems to work a lot more with the original wording:

"Up to two Wolf Scouts may replace their Bolt Pistol With:"

which got changed to...

"Up to two Wolf Scouts may take:"

Still the same thing? (i don't think so)

Page 88 – Wolf Scouts Pack, Options, last bullet point

Change “Up to two Wolf Scouts may replace their bolt

pistol with:” to “Up to two Wolf Scouts may take:”

No longer requires replacing.

Yeah, looks like I was rusty on my Errata knowledge. I was wrong on the last point. Rather, I was just going off the codex ruling.
