And So It Begins... Finally

Alright, so I finally have a weekend to myself, and work shall begin. If you want to see the original discussion about what's going to happen with this project see the first thread <Great Company Project>

First job is the wolf scouts. I'll start with the original 5-man squad and their WGPL.

Just whipped this guy up.

Grey stuff is Blu-Tack, every modellers best friend after GS :mellow:. Pre-posing these guys and getting happy with the look of them before the gluing starts.

Trialling using the torso, head, and arms of the Fantasy Chaos Marauder Horseman, cutting off the legs, and shaving off the chaos symbols. Couple of old Scout backpacks sitting on ebay at the moment which I'm thinking of getting to add a little extra to them, or possibly some spare IG backpacks.

Plan is to get the pack "done" today, and going to begin conversion work on a couple of HQs, so should have more photos as the day progresses.

EDIT: Another scout & the WGPL sorted out, then the camera decides to die on me as I'm about to take photos. Will grab some more batteries tomorrow and start on the gluing and GSing. Finally got the hang of mating up the Marauder torsos with the scout legs though :P.

"Old" metal WGPL with P.Fist, Combi-Melta pieces are the SW storm bolter from GH sprue & Inferno Pistol from BA sprue. Going to have to GS fill the left side of the C.Melta to clean it up.

Need to GS fill the buckle on the belt & probably put a small wolf skull on it. Also going to GS a WTN (cosmetic only obviously) onto this and one of the other scouts to cover some Chaos Symbol removal.

Just arrived from the US;

1 Landraider Redeemer/Crusader

40 Grey Hunters (20 already awaiting assembly)

2 SM Command Squads

4 Drop Pods

10 Assault Marines

1 Vindicator

5 TDA WG

And that's 1/4 of what is to be ordered... lol. Good thing I've a few helping hands for the basic construction jobs on this project! :)

Unforunately the Drop Pods, Termies, and Skyclaws are the only models (aside from the scouts) I can work on at the moment, the rest are awaiting further parts (Chaos Warriors / MotW conversion components / FW mods)

Alright, a question regarding bases. I'm a lazy 'git when it comes to doing nice basing, and finding decent shale around where I am seems to be a mission of epic proportions, so I've been looking at some of the resin cast bases out there. I want something with a rocky/winter feel (will be adding snow flock / some other snow effect to it as well, along with a few skulls). I'm currently tossing up between two supplies, Base-ix & Secret Weapon Miniatures. There is a bit of a price jump between the two, but I'm tempted to go with Base-ix for the regular guys, and Secret Weap for the HQs / WG / Dreads (and cavalry bases considering Base-ix seems short on supply with those.

Take a look, what do people think of each style?

The other option I was considering, was using the "slate" style Base-ix bases for WG / HQs

Thoughts, comments?

I use both; the Runic Mountain bases from Secret Weapons and the Slate Wasteland bases from Dragonforge.

I prefer the quality of the Dragonforge's resin to be honest. Its got more weight to it.

The Runic Moutain bases are cool, but I opted to only use them for one squad since an entire army of them would result in multiples of distinct bases. Whereas, the Slate Wasteland bases can be different based on the amount of snow etc I put on them.

Not a knock against Secret Weapon's quality btw. I use their Bone Fields bases for my Dark Eldar.

Nice, thanks for the info <_<.

And for some more updates;

TDA Rune Priest - comprised of the old OOP Metal Rune Priest, some GK Terminator parts, and a shoulder pad from the WG Terminator sprues. He's all pinned up and secured, awaiting my shipment of Forge World odds & ends (Using the Forge World SW TDA kit right shoulder pads on all my TDA HQs). Once that gets here he'll get some GS clean-up of gaps, and possibly a GS wolf-cloak - though not certain of that idea yet, I'm sort of happy with the way he looks without it.

While I had the WG Terminator sprues out I thought I'd get started on this guy, any able to guess what he's going to be? :P He's now waiting on some GK TDA psilencers I've ordered for conversion purposes.

And, here's the reason the above 3 photos are all I have for you tonight;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/0Silverwolf0/Warhammer%2040k/Misc/IMGP2071.jpg

After last night's game against a mates Tourny 1250pt GK army (Castellan Crowe, 3x5 Purifiers with 2 Psycannons, 2 Harlberds, & a Deamon Hammer with Rhinos, & 3x Psybolt rifleman dreads), we decided it was time get some proper terrain on our "table" (The glass table underneath - in the process of building a modular gaming table). $220 later down at the local store and a bunch of craters, a "Battlescape", & an Imperial Sector are under construction to give my poor wolves a fighting chance against the storm of Str8 coming their way.

  • 2 weeks later...

Alright, so aside from some personal in-house issues going on at the moment, this project is lacking in update because the project as a whole is evolving.

I have begun seriously considering doing this entire project in Art-Scale ("True-Scale"). This began from me looking at the options for creating a command Land-Raider for Bran Redmaw, combining a Baneblade kit and LR Redeemer kit. From that idea it has evolved, and grown, into a full Art-scale conversion of the entire project.

Aside from the obvious issue with this plan (cost), which I'm fine with though it will likely place quite an extension onto the length of time this project is going to take to complete I've come up with two other issues for this.

1) "Legality" as far as tournaments and the like are concerned. Has anyone tried running "True-scale" marines in tournaments before? Was it allowed, is there complaints about the size of the models regarding their available LOS etc.

2) Has anyone ever done True-scale modification on Rhino chassis vehicles. Does anyone know of any tutorials regarding this? Does anyone have any ideas regarding how this could potentially be done.

The Landraiders (3) are all going to get the Baneblade treatment now, the exact details of how I'm currently planning / working on. I'm also looking at Doghouse's & Lamenter's (Master of the Forge) work for ideas on methods etc. Anyone know of other Artscale tutorials or different methods for these conversions?

Currently I'm basically going to use a combination of plasticard spacing and GS work to bulk/clean the conversions, following similar lines to the work of Doghouse & Lamenter, with my own variations on methods to use based on theirs.
