Standardless Standard Bearers

Hello! I'm working on a loyalist chapter that's more military than knight-y, the same sort of deal as the Raptors, and was trying to think of a way of modelling a standard bearer model without the actual standard, because it seems all kinds of inappropriate and impractical, although I'd still like an obvious counts-as to have a complete command squad. I'm thinking a marine bearing an inspirational relic perhaps, or a revered suit of armour, but that still seems a bit...strange. A communications marine who can relay the orders of the officers, perhaps? Has anyone else had a go at doing something like this or has ideas to help me out?

Vox caster esque backpack....perhaps an Icon instead of a standard. dunno really. as a modern soldier i still personally adore the idea of bearing colours into theater (even if only to sit in the HQ)

Problem you will run into outside of friendly games (if your into that) is your gonna need to be very convincing and distinct as to what it is that is representing your banner/standard and why its not a banner

One of the suggestions from the 3.0 codex update on daemons (which came out about two months before the 3.5 CSM codex) was that while you *should* have large icons and standards, you could get away with modelling the like the figure is holding a holy relic. One of the icons bearers I used was actually a guy holding the Magic 8 Skull. it was a skull that he was holding in his hand... with the number 8 painted on it in red. It was plainly visible, but at the same time wasn't hugely obvious.

One of my opponents liked using a Vindicare assassin, and having somewhat subdued icon bearers helped them survive a bit better.

You could also try using chalices of blood or unholy water, copies of the Book of Lorgar, scrolls of doom, desecrated reliquaries, Messican Jumping Skulls, or anything else you can think of that would make a suitable focus for daemons and teleporters to home in on.

i know you said you are not going for a knight theme but i i thought it was worth posting this.

that is what i did for a banner bearer.

though for raptors i think you have hit the nail on the head with the comms guy, giving out specific commands to gain the edge.

good luck with your idea.

I like the Comms idea,

My dad was a comsman in Vietnam. The guy to get shot at first, so if you think of 18 century wars as a parallel, it was the banner that was sought after as well, capturing enemy banner, meant a morale break of enemy lines, or insured a more fierce fighting to recover it. If you think about it, it had a similar effect, if you loose your comsman in action, you are cut off from HQ and intel. So to me a marine with a big Vox unit should work very well.

Cheers very much for the replies. I've got a standard bearing...standard bearer already painted up in case of any hassle but wanted a version of the chap more in keeping with my chapter's fluff and how I want to envision the character. I think the comms route works, although if I had the skills Grimdarknesses' idea of a pyrotechnic signal of some sort would be a cracking project.
