Setting up for my first Apoc

Going to play my first Apoc game in November.

Here's the game:

Space Marine battle barge crashes on an Ork controlled world.

I get to field my whole collection of Wolves (~5000 pts) + 5000 pts of marines from my buddies collection (vanilla marines or just more SW is up to me).

We can each take Super Heavies and I know he has a couple Stompas lying around.....

So my question is: Should I try to take a Super Heavy? Neither of us have Thunderhawks so that is out. He's offered me a Warhound, but as it's not something that would be on the barge I would have to have it enter from a random board edge after rolling for reserves. Is there a SH I could have as a marine? I could spend part of my extra 5000 pts to bring in IG from off the board as well, but I don't know anything about IG.

Advice please....

well, the here are a few lessons i have learned from my past apoc games

1) bring aspirin. you'll need it.

2) sleep well the night before

3) bring febreeze.

those are essential. now to gaming tips:

1) i own no super heavies. Wolves are so good at their respective roles i dont feel it is 100% required. titan hunter formations and hammer blow work wonders.

2) take wolf scouts. their ability to appear and mess crap up has saved me alot of pain in apoc games.

i'll post more when i think of it.

If there are going to be Stompas, a warhound w/ strength D weapons would be excellent if you have access to it. Otherwise see what apocalypse formations you can come up w/ from your vehicle collection between you & your buddy's SM collection. The linebreaker squadrons are excellent.

don't remember the name, but there's this Land Raider with 3 twinlinked Lasscannons and 2 regular ones... that could do some damage to a stompa I'd imagine?

that, and Thunderwolf mounted Thunderhammer bearers... carve through heavies like lightning. (155 pts for an Iron Priest with 4 cyberwolves goes a long way)

Definatly take the Warhound with the D weapons!! they are just brutal. I've used one in a few apoc games and it never died, also it blew a stompa to bits in one shot literally. I kept rolling a 6 on the damage table and just kept on rolling 6's so I go to roll again til it exploded and took half the dread mob with it. hands down the best 750 points you could spend IMHO. Not to mention that Ork stompas don't really have any shields unlike the WarHound. they can try to use a big mek but strength D ignores cover!!!

Also, if you take the Warhound, take the strategic asset replacements on it which is just plain evil. That's what I did in our last Apoc game so it made it a little more expendable so I used it as a major fire magnet & to duke it out w/ the enemy Reaver.

A buddy of mine has a masive ork army along with two stompas. Before I got my warhound, I used......

5 terminators= combi melta/chainfist in a drop pod.

I had two sets of these guys and called them the stompa stopas. Since I got my warhound I usually bring just one set depending on the points and what other team members are bringing. I also have used this though very expensive.....

Wolf lord= chainfist/combi melta, saga of the bear, terminator armor, Arjac, and 3 terminators combi melta/chainfist in a drop pod.

All of the above combinations have worked very well for me.
