Cold Fire
Hi I have seen that there are a few posts on here with regards to stripping the paint from Marines. But they all seem to be US based. I was wondered if someone could assist me with UK options. I have an assault squad that I want to re purpose and so need to strip down and start again. Any help would be appreciated. Mercadius
Flash degreaser or Fairy power Spray works perfectly. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/237343-advice-on-stripping-paint/#findComment-2861855 Share on other sites
RebG
As already mentioned, Fairy Power Spray works really well, especially on metal models. Have a shop around and see if you can get some Simple Green though - it's made in the U.K, just hard to get hold of. I got some brought back from the U.S by some relatives and it's better than the Power Spray and Mr Muscle I've used previously. Claws of Corax
I'd suggest Dettol surface dissinfectent. Soak it in a pot for 30 mins then take an old tooth brush or wire wool to it while submerging it in a bowl of luke warm water, it'll clean up quite quickly. It wont strip glue or melt plastic (I'm not sure about resin). It's the best I have found.. but if you guys know of better I'd like to know... Bolt Thrower
For metal I use nitromors, that stuff is awesome. For plastic I use 50/50 dettol and water, leave to soak overnight and then i spray with wd40 (very important!) as i find the paint can go incredibly sticky when it's loosened then scrub off paint with a toothbrush. Then soak in warm soapy water, scrub with old toothbrush (quite a stiff one) and rinse. I've also used brake fluid but I don't find it as good as dettol. Jeffy.Gee
A word of caution on Fairy power spray is that it doesn't do resin any favours. It made a couple of my FW resin heads squishy after only a short time soaking. Plastic and metal parts are fine though. Urauloth
Fairy Power Spray works really well, especially on metal models. How do you use this? I assume you don't spray it on, do you take it out of the bottle and soak the minis in it? (sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a box of metal minis I could do with stripping) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/237343-advice-on-stripping-paint/#findComment-2863092 Share on other sites
Hezrou
Just last night stripped my old school metal termi's. I used superdrug acetone free nail polish remover. worked great. gonna try a plastic mini later P.S I should say these mini's had 2 full coats of unwatered dowm gw paints. Bloodangels then spacewolves so paint was thick thick thick! Claws of Corax
-> Hezrou!! DONT use Nail varnish remover on plastic or resin models it melts the model. That is why Dettol is so good, it can be used on plastic without the risk of ruining the model. Hope that helps explain the process.. Claws Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/237343-advice-on-stripping-paint/#findComment-2863198 Share on other sites
Urauloth
It does, cheers, that's kinda what I thought. Do you thin it with water or can you use it neat? Dorns Padawan
I use non acetone nail polish remover from Superdrug. It is a purple coloured solution & IIRC it costs around 96p! Works well on plastic & metal (have not tried it on resin). I leave my mini's to soak for about 30-45 seconds then scrub them with an old toothbrush, works wonders & you need very little effort with the toothbrush :D . Hope that helps :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/237343-advice-on-stripping-paint/#findComment-2863350 Share on other sites
Hezrou
Dorns thats what I used last night as previously mentioned. Claws said not to use it on plastic.......But being the experimental type I did! as I thought it worked great. 3 hours soaking to make certain no damage would be done. Dorns Padawan
Hezrou: Haha just like me then mate! Acetone free nail polish won't damage your plastic models so I am pretty certain it would not damage resin, though I have yet to try it. After a 3 hour soak I'm amazed you had to do any scrubing?!
