Freehand Chapter Badge

Hello Brothers,

The search program is showing up as an error every time, and I need some help on this one. What method do you guys use to freehand the Chapter badge? I have purchased some of the GW metal ones, but it obviously doesn't work on some of the more detailed models, and I had a standing army prior to buying the metal pads. I want them to look both good and consistant. Thanks in advance.

I use the stick method mostly. The Dark Angel logo is mostly made up of straight lines. I draw the vertical sword stick then the small cross stick for the hilt. Along with the hilt, I place the two sticks that represent the tip of the wings. Now I fill in the sword blade to have a diamond point. The edges of the blade will mark out the other end of the wings and I place two sticks that are parallel to the blade edge. Then I place the two circular arcs with an equal number of feathers on each side. (Usually 2 on each side but I have gone from 1 up to eight to give variety and make each marine an individual.) Then I put the diamonds on the ends of the hilt and pommel of the sword and that is the quick way I free hand the DA symbol.
Thanks for the links EPK, that is exactly what I was looking for. Especially since my search-fu is literally broken. GMB, I am very interested in the stick method, is there any way you could post a WIP or finished pic of a badge painted this way?

Below are some photos of my Fallen Dark Angels. They are the best illustration of my symbols.

And some of my DA.

Well, since you bought some of the metal ones, you should have some unused plastic ones lying around. Use those for practice.

Since I tend to paint my shoulderpads (along with anything else that would cover something else up) separate from the rest of the model, I tend to sit and bang out a combat squad's worth of shoulders when I have time. Breaking things down like that gives me smaller goals to work towards, instead of "o gawd I have to paint another squuuaaaddd..." I can do shoulders, then arms/guns, then bodies. And with the extra bits I've accumulated over the years, I actually have more shoulders and backpacks than I do marines. So if I want to work a bit ahead, I can make up extra shoulderpads, backpacks, and bolters. If I don't need them for a squad, they can always be bits on a transport or something.

If I screw up just a shoulderpad, it can get plopped into the simple green tub and stripped without having to redo the whole model. I've seen many people try and paint under the shoulderpad after they've glued it on - myself included early on - to know that it's easier to paint and assemble in stages for some models, instead of glue everything together then paint. Thankfully Guardians of the Covenant is slightly easier than the DA badge, but it still takes practice to get it looking okay.
