Hear da Lamentation
Ive got a post on the army list detailing my 1st attempt at a different Wolf army, using lots of stuff I've never tried before. PLayed last weekend, so I thought I'd do a basic report. Army was Bjorn - plasma cannon Grey Hunter Pack 1 - RP (JoWW, MH), WG (pf,cm), 7GH (melta, standard) in rhino Grey Hunter Pack 2 - WG (pf,cm), 8GH (melta, standard, motw) in rhino Grey Hunter Pack 3 - WG (pf,cm), 7GH (melta, standard) in rhino 2 packs Longfangs (5ml+packleader) 2 landspeeder typhoons. 1 LoneWolf in terminator armour. I played against my arch-enemy and his Nids. He had roughly the following Swarmlord + 2 guards, Tyranid Prime. 25 Hormigaunts 7xGeneStealers+BroodLord, 7xGeneStealers+BroodLord, 8 x Genestealers 10 devilgaunts (the assault3 weapon guys) 3 Hive Guard 2 x Zoanthropes in droppod Tervagon I won roll (with Bjorns help) and went 1st - Spearhead Capture and Control with objectives in each corner. Expecting outflanking genestealers coming in from my rear, I castled up in the corner, put quite far forward. LF were about 18" in, one on a hill, one in a ruin; the RP pack lead the rhinos from the front in a wedge formation and Bjorn stayed behind the ruin, to keep in cover and protect the LF from those pesky genestealers. Round 1 He surprised me by infiltrating 2 of the genestealer units with broodlord, 12" from longfangs - he managed to get in a blind spot. 1st round, I fired all missile launchers at his deathstar unit. It was in cover and has lots of hits ... it would take a number of rounds to take it out, but if gone, my Wolves could mop up nicely in combat. Did well with 3 wounds. Bjorn and a pack of GH peeled off to deal with the genestealers ... killing only about 4 because of cover saves. His go saw the remaining GS do their usual 18" move/run/assault (I dont think he ever rolls anything less than a 6 for their run) and attack the LF in the ruin. Clearly these guys are his "suicide squad". Actually the LF do amazingly well and manage to win combat (by 1 wound), leaving 2 left. Tervigon pooped 8 gaunts Round 2 My shooting against the deathstar goes well again and he is left with just swarmlord(2wnds taken) and Prime(1wnd taken). GH and LF kill off the genestealers with the 2 LF managing to survive another round of being attacked by 2 broodlords ... VERY lucky. RP shoots forward in his rhino and catched 2 HiveGuard with Jaws ... taking them both out. Crucially ... his zoes dont come in for reserve, but the GS do ... bad news for him. His round - shooting pretty ineffectual (he was seriously missing his usual 6 hiveguard). Combat, his GS went for Bjorn. Bad mistake .... he has never faced him before. Bjorn just soaked their attacks ... they never even got a glance in the whole combat ... he ended up taking them out on the 4th turn. Tervigon pooped 16 gaunts ... but doubled, so constipated for rest of game. Round 3. Frankly .. looking awesome for me ... but my only chance of getting to his objective in time was the landspeeders .. and the 30 str4 shots from the devilgaunts made me too wary of moving them too close. This was my big mistake .. I thought I would have time to move the LS up after taking out the devilgaunts and his deathstar ... so I stayed put with them. Shooting was again focused on deathstar, leaving him with swarmlord(3 wnds taken) Prime (2wnds). GH moved up, RP took out Tervigon and remaining Hive Guard with Jaws. His go ... looking bad ... and no Zoes again ! Round 4 Mop up from me ... and started moving hell for leather towards his objective. In the end though, the game finished on turn 5. All he has 3 devilgaunts left .... BUT they were sitting on his objective and my landspeeders were a good 12" away ! DRAW snatched from the Jaws of victory ... A lesson I already knew ... but clearly needed ramming home again. Fair play to my Nid mate for never saying die ... I just didn't start my run early enough with the LS. You've got to expect the game to end on turn 5 ... or it will sting you in the ass ... Good game though, really enjoyed it. LW was fun. He ended up getting shot about 45 times and still survived. Fun guy - and one you could really enjoy modelling. I liked the basic termie loadout ... cheap for 40 points. Grimtooth
Seems like you got a little caught up in playing the army and not the mission. Happens to all of us.
