When you suffer from...

I just suffered a close defeat...if so many things had gone better with the dice...ugh.

Here is an examples of how :) luck can utterly destroy a low-number GK army.

I thought I was going to do well when I stole the initiative. Turns out that's pretty much the only 6 I rolled all game... :(

My psycannons and assault cannons rended...once, all game, despite putting out 20+ shots.

I had a fantastic highlight: 5 terminators and a GKGM assaulted 15 lootas in a forest. I rolled a 2 for my psychotroke which is so awesome...1 hammerhand and rad grenades later and I wiped out the entire unit. This was followed by absolutely devastating turn; the grots nearby popped off about 16 shots...and caused 5 :cuss :D :cuss :cuss unsaved wounds (so many 1's, argh!!!!)...leaving me with the GKGM with one wound and a single hammernator. They were then assaulted by a few power claw nobs and warboss...I missed all my attacks (and rolled a 1 for psychotrokes) and I laid down and died.

Those grots then put out 12 shots at my GKSS squad...I lost 3 this time, all to 1's! Damn those sniper grots, I then got charged by the nobs there, rolled a 1 for my psychotrokes, missed all my attacks, and died (starting to become a bad habit...).

The last insult my dice gave me was a paladin and inquisitor charging three wounded deffkoptas...I rolled a 1 for psychotrokes, missed all my attacks, but for once survived. This is the third key point where epic dice fail lost me the game.

AAAAAGGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!! :cuss :HQ:

I'm not put off by this game at all. I hardly qualify it as a game, considering most of my army took off their mighty armor, missed everything, and in general failed so hard their butts hurt. I want to keep testing this idea, especially when the dice are, at a minimum, average.

Have any of you had such a horrible game due purely to dice? Any similar fail stories with your Grey Knights?

Hehehe, that sucks man. Some of my own army's impressive feats of epic fail;

Don't pass a single psychic test with my squad or Librarian (get one Perils wound for my trouble as well). Whiffed with every attack on my Terminator squad (either missed or failed to wound) vs an Assault Marine squad. Librarian missed with all his attacks. Powerfist Sarge rips him in two, rest of the squad inflict four wounds, three 1's. I fall back, they catch me, I lose remaining Terminators to 'No Retreat' 1's. :)

In another game, two Strike squads and a Paladin squad all firing maximum psycannon at a Landraider failed to inflict a single damage result. Not one glance or penetrate. I felt like breaking something, because my Vindicare had already failed (rolled a 1, two 2's and a 3 for turbo-pen). I had to then charge my PsyDreads into his disembarked Terminators (he rolled bad for my 'Sanctuary' caused DT test haha) to delay them eating my Strikers.

Strike squad gets charged by Black Templar squad (after not killing a single one in their shooting phase). His re-rolls to hit rack up the hits, and I take wounds. I resolve my attacks (both are at I4 obviously), cause one dead Templar. I fail 6 armour saves out of 7, about four 1's in there, fall back from combat. He pursues, I get 'No Retreat' wounds, I lose all the remaining Knights. I nearly broke my nose with the force of the facepalm I made.

one that springs to mind was against a Deathwing I shot a squad with bolters caused 5 wounds which he promptly failed I felt bad for him

I know the feeling too in more than a few games nothing really springs to mind but my termies always seems less durable than anyone else sigh. I find that it happens in fits for me I'll have a few really bad games then table someone then it starts all over again the dice gods are fickle masters. hope things pick up on your next game.

Got one from the weekend I was playing a Tyranids charged a trygon prime with a full squad and a libby with 2 hallberds a hammer and 2 swords failed to pop force weopens and my failed hammer hand rolled double 6 for might of titian out of the 17 attacks 3 hit and no wounds it was very much an oopps moment. on top of that the trygon eat my unit whole was NOT happy

"A" game? A game?!

Yes. I may have had one or two or 30 dozen games like that. This is not news! And if it has almost never happened to you before ... would you pretty please ship me your dice?

I originally played Skaven back in the earlier editions of the WH:F rules, and with everyone else getting buffed up, I felt like I was left in the dust. Granted, it was a horde army, and had some of the most devastating tactics and weapons in the game...when they worked. They would either marginally squeak (no pun intended) out a victory, or fail. And when I mean fail, I mean fail spectacularly. Like, roll to ring the bell, crack the bell, destroy it, wound everyone in the unit pushing it, etc etc.

Anyways, I think that playing an army that was prone to failure or weirdness sort of prepped me for the 'bad days' of WH:40k. I'm jaded to bad dice rolls now, and I think it's for the better.

Then again, I try not to take the game too seriously, either.

I can count on one hand the number of games that have had such epically bad dice, and that's out of hundreds of games (of 5th). Most Chessex dice sets serve me well...a couple of them, on the other hand, do not.

Skaven are meant to blow themselves up as often as they spectacularly succeed; it's written into their armybook and fluff . It's just so frustrating when the elite of the elite just lay down and die without doing anything...that shouldn't be happening!

Ship me your cheater dice NOW! :) [grumble count on one hand the number of epically bad dice game grumble grubmle....]

Well there are bad games, and then there are BAD games. The worst game I may have ever seen was had by one of my opponents in a recent tournament. I'm not sure that he rolled much above a 3 all game long. It was a 2000 point game, and at the end the tournament had us calculate VPs as part of scoring, the result was me with around 1700 him 0. He score 0 victory points. I think he killed 5 Purifiers in the entirety of the game. I have never had, nor had I ever seen dice quite so bad.
Haha, that's not to say I haven't had so few below average dicing...that happens often enough, but it's usually balanced somewhere else in the game to keep it on the level. It's the game of turn after turn, everything fails terribly that is more rare. I dunno, buy Chessex and see what happens!
in 3ed i remember a game where I charged 7 BT terminators and the champ in to a unit of 12 NM and a lord . champ killed the lord , termis killed 10 NM . my opponent hits back [not using the fist he wanted that i5 to hit at the same time] . 8 wounds . 7 1s'. next turn champ gets killed by the fist asp champion.
8 wounds . 7 1s'.

Man, isn't it funny how things like this stick in your memory?

I'll never forget the first time my brand-new painted Vanguard with three Storm Shields and Calgar charged into a pack of Boyz. We killed an average amount. In return I received only four wounds which I allocated to the four shield-bearers (at that point, iirc, I'd lost all the non-upgraded guys to shooting). Four those four wounds I roll four 1s.

My opponent couldn't stop apologizing as I drew my fail-marines from the table, leaving Calgar and a Power Fist serg by themselves.

Now don't get me wrong, I've had my fair share of moral victories and awesome kills, but it's like that bad service you get from someone in customer service, or technical issues...they stick more than not.

I've rolled all 5's and 6's from 33 wounds of ork boys against my lone captain in artificer armour with 1 wound left...My snipers have picked off daemon princes, blown up vehicles. My powerfist SGT has slothed through a squad of plague marines, etc. I just feel eveyone's pain of the 1's. My worst one was against a Imperial Guard army who he just threw together on short notice since he was a filler from my other opponent cancelling and he got into close combat with my marines just for fun......yeah.....let's just say my phy-conditioning had to wipe that one from my memory of my Ultras.

i've started running with 2 identical sets of dice, normally keeping the not-being-used-at-the-moment set on the table, just to show the being-used dice that they ain't special and i WILL replace them if they don't keep it together

I will be trying that from now one. I remember with my TDA and Hammertor I was being shot at by orks and all I could rolls was ones for armour saves and wounds. They could hit like stars but they much have been using nerf bats that day.

I had a similar experience two nights ago. I dusted off my SOBs and gave the new WD dex a whirl. 1500 pts vs Eldar. We rolled a kill point game. I won. By tabling him. In round 4. He managed to pop 1 rhino and kill one retributer (model. Not squad). I’d never seen so many 1s and 2s rolled compared to my 5s and 6s. Had I seen it played out elsewhere I would have suspected rigged dice but, and here’s the kicker, he had forgotten his set so we were sharing mine! If I can just get every game to go off like that one you can expect to see my sisters in EVERY ‘Ard Boyz finals!

Recently there was an inverse of this thread (on Amicus I believe) were we all recounted our greatest successes. For every batch of solid, disappointing 1s I roll, there are far more times when I roll unrealistic numbers of 5s and 6s where - in one example - a Captain, Corbulo, and a lone assault marine withstood over 120 S5 shots and sustained zero wounds. In my first game in a shop ever, my Libarian's accompanying tac squad was cut down by Kroot...and in his rage he proceeded to make 30 consecutive armor saves as he mopped up the Kroot, slogged over to a Tau tank, and killed the contents (when it popped out to rapid fire him and failed to do a single wound).

Sometimes I suck. And sometimes I get SUPER EPIC. In my experience, my dice are very kind to me, so I find it funny that - in spite of my hot dice - I still remember catastrophic failures.

Hah, I've played a game where it was a comedy of errors. Both of us couldn't roll higher than 2 for most of the game. I finally started to roll some 3's and 4's around turn 4, so I squeaked out a victory since he couldn't make any armor saves.

My Terminators see more shelf time than any other unit in the army (even my Scouts!) because I just can't roll anything but 1's for their armor saves. My Terminators fall like wheat before the scythe to anything and everything I put them up against.
